The original explanation for why Richard looks so young here is that he was in his hillbilly getup, but I actually think (in this case) that Richard was time travelling from the times of the Black Rock. He's still ageless, but for Richard, this scene happened a LOT longer ago, likely before he was made ageless. Frozen Donkey Wheel and all. This is probably why he insists that Ben is patient, because it's going to be ages until the Richard relative to his own time meets him again.

Im a huge huge fan of lost don't get me wrong but i just think that the writers made a slight error when deciding Richards appearance in this scene in comparison to every other clip in the show.

Maybe it was just a deception for DHARMA by making them think that they (the others) had access to no resources at all and couldn't get off the Island (like they did in season 2).

That isn't Richard at all... Its the Black Smoke Monster!!! This was part of his plan to kill Jacob. He first appeared to Ben as his mother. Then knowing he would get upset and run into the jungle, decide to disguise himself as a hostile. In this case Richard. I know what your saying.... Smokey can't take the form of people who haven't died on the island but we don't know that for sure. Or maybe Ben is special in some way where Smokey can manifest himself just from Ben's memories.

If you look at Richards face when Ben told him that his mother said it wasnt time yet, he smiled like he was happy with what he just heard. Perhaps he understood that to mean that ben would be their Leader at some point. He also told Ben that he can go with them but he would have to be very very patient as if he knew it would be many yrs down the road when Ben became an adult.

Richard presumably was the leader of the Others before they wiped out the Dharma Initiative. Notice how interested Richard is about Ben's encounter with his deceased mother. It's possible that several more paranormal events happened during Ben's prior life and Richard must have acknowledged him as someone special.

I think that Richard is more of the "Judge" of the Island. He would be like Samuel from the Bible, a man who did not lead the people but is the man who chose the person to lead the people. He's not a judge as in a federal judge but the person who judges who is worthy to protect the Island.
