  • he really overplayed the shit out of this, I'm a usual fan but i did not like this at all

  • Original by Guitar Slim, not SRV. great tune. RIP

  • Anyone who thinks John Mayer can't play blues obviously have never tried learning his songs or solos. He is undoubtedly one of the cleanest and most interesting blues guitarists, especially in terms of technique and phrasing. I suggest those people try and learn some of his live stuff from 'Where The Light Is', and then say he's not good.

  • This is NOT an SRV song but Guitar Slim. SRV, Earl King, SRV, George Throrgood, and many others have covered this. None claim it as their own. ASCAP -- BMI have this copyrighted under Guitar Slim and not SRV. READ THE FINE PRINT. Oh yeah this is likely some pirated video, sorry I forgot. Where is the rest of the song? Was this part when security shoved the camera up you bum?

  • @Satchmoeddie You cant really pirate a taped show... Especially when the artist encourages taping their shows... And it could be worse, they could have said it was a JM original song. Give them some credit and dont try to be a know it all. You just end up sounding like an ass.

  • That hammond organ kills me everytime..

  • John mayer's a fantastic musician who writes very intricate and complex music. it just happens to suck.

  • The songs not by SRV, it's by Guitar Slim (Eddie Jones).

  • John Mayer may know his way around a guitar, but the guy's a colossal douche.

  • Somebody shoot him! Fuck! Sounds like an MIT asshole who studied tabs. Its like listening to AC/DC with the stereo on 1. Sure the notes maybe right but there is no intensity, passion, or even a understanding of the Blues- there are so many better guitarists out there who are starving while this jack off wipes his ass with $100 bills. Worse of all he isn't continuing anyone's legacy, anyone know about Doyle Bramhall ll? He should be getting paid! So fuckin' gay! Look what MTV has done to us! FUCK

  • @fknali you're a douch

  • @fknali I completely disagree with this comment, John mayer was once an unknown artist who played the blues clubs from the age of 13. Of course he has passion but you've got to take into account that your just judging this one minuscule performance which occurred 4 years ago. What do you mean by continuing anyone's legacy? He his making his own legacy whilst exposing blues music to a new generation.

  • john mayer needs to stick to blues instead of being a sellout

  • Guitar Slim (Eddie Jones) cover

  • well if you get mad about john rocking stevies riffs....tell stevie to quit rocking albert king's riffs.

  • sounds so much better playin the blues

  • woow. this is freaking tight! totally made an already bad ass song, his own. john mayer deserves mad respect. first off, for having the balls to do stevie songs and second, for doing them so damn well. my hat's off to you, john mayer.

  • @hyp3rlit3132 ain't stevie's song, it's Guitar Slim's song.

  • He should be shot for even trying to cover this song. shot people. open your eyes or better yet your ears

  • @MrRollTideRoll22 you do a great job of sounding like a redneck :) well done!

  • this is NO SRV cover, it is a SLOPPY copy of bb king or something. Mayer could not run cords for SRV let alone try to cover one of his songs

  • @strother1969 Guitar Slim (Eddie Jones) wrote this blues track and yes Stevie did a famous cover of it. I'm sure BB has played it but Guitar Slim and SRV versions are most famous

  • @thevuduchild Guitar slim did the original version and there have been a number of covers such as Earl King, Freddie King and of course SRV. Speaking of blues guitarists, Freddie King is the man and was an innovator when it comes to blues/funk guitar.

  • GUITAR SLIM, is the original artist. no if's, and's, or but's.

  • it was guitar slim down in the big easy

  • Song was written by Earl King not SRV.

  • This song was written by a guy named Earl King from New Orleans, LA. not SRV.

  • No, it was written by Guitar slim

  • nope

  • what song is mr mayer playing in this video. I was hoping to hear the "things that i used to do". Oh well on to the next video!!!!

  • @srvforme same here another song ruined by mayer haha

  • Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones to be exact....

  • dont forget Freddie King

  • love freddy's version

  • Isn't this Albert Collins' originally?

  • Guitar slim original, not stevie

  • John Mayer ha critics, but there is no dispute about SRV, not even close

  • SRV didn't have the internet, where everybody can become a critic and talk shit while still hiding behind their computer screen and keyboard. I love both players but I hate the whole Youtube-argue-about-what-players-are-legit-and-what-ones-aren't crap.

  • Very well said, and from what I've read about SRV, he would rather have spent his time with those big hands of his on the fretboard, instead of a keyboard. I think he would be happy to see the music being carried on.

  • JM's great, SRV was , does anybody remember Elvin Bishop's version of "the things that I used to do"??

  • there is no debate, both JM and SRV (rip) are outstanding musicians. to compare them is to try and distinguish the breeze from the wind.

  • The eternal oh he plays other things so he can't play blues argument! Double Trouble, BB king, Buddy Guy all think John mayer good enough to play with infact he did srv covers with DT. Without feeling JM could not play the way he does. It's just self ego bullshit of people 'who understand blues more' the same jelous people who envy local bands who make the big time thinking they have sold out in reality these people are just bitter and can't stand success of others.feel blue not green with envy

  • Hehe yeah like any of Mayer's critics would have the balls to share thier opinions with JM to his face, especially when he's around Guy, Clapton, etc..

  • You can bet your whole life that if SRV was still here... he'd be jammin with Mayer as much as their schedules would let them.

    ---

Why not right? All the legends still around have done it. (Including the rest of Double Trouble)

  • True True. And I guarantee John would be playing his own riffs and not trying to keep up with Stevie. John's a fun guy to watch.

  • @DarkManS32 - i believe if SRV were around to jam with John then John would've never came onto the pop scene but woulda been a bad ass blues artist but since blues in a popular genre only the blues fans would be into John.

  • haha- you're all a bunch of immature idiots. You sound really tough and all on the internet. If you want to get angry when listening to music, check out some gwar or something . . . this is stuff you need to ENJOY and APPRECIATE! Not debate about dick sucking online. Please get a life and enjoy to appreciate music. RIP SRV and a long road to JM playing good music.

  • don't worry abot grga888. I've checked around and it is just some kid trying to get a rise out of people. Don't bother with grga888's posts.

  • dustball321 is right.

  • this is to all dumbasses who talk big shit about what "real blues" is........ i dnt think john mayer would give a flying shit what in the hell you guys have to think and about all your music theory, i can tell you y he doesnt give a flying shit....... here goes...... hes to busy playing on STAGE and getting noticed by fans who are buying his CD'S and going to his CONCERTS, good musicians let their music and career speak for them, so far i cant hear any music out of you guys.... where's it at?

  • it blows my mind how arrogant you can be talking about blues and album sales in the same breath.. have you lost your soul and mind you son of a bitch.. but you are right he is "to busy playing on STAGE and getting noticed by fans who are buying his CD'S and going to his CONCERTS" and in the meantime not practicing or having the blues.. I guess by your standards the jonas brothers must be some of the best godamn musicians on the planet

  • im also willing to bet he has never heard john lee hookers sugar hill version along with all of you.. it is in a whole other universe than this but for those curious enough to wonder where real blues came from you welcome to do some actual listening to real music that might make you think..

  • noone gives a shit what you are willing to bet, i can tell you why..... because noone can take your word for things because you havent accomplished anything and your not the guy on stage in stadiums and arenas or the guy who kids and musicians look up 2, instead of letting your mouth do the talking, let your music speak for you, if your such a badass who knows what "real blues" is all about, then post a video and let them "jack u off" by telling you how good you are!

  • hey bluesbrother.. thats all swell im sure johnny doesnt give 2 shits about anything but himself playing up on stage every night,, you have no idea who i am and what i have done and that has nothing to o with anything, my music speaks for me just fine but when im not playing guitar i use things called words to get points across you fuckhead.. with a name like that you think you would have some mutherfuckin respect for what made the blues good,, jimi,, junior, buddy, bb,, hooker, skip james

  • the problem is that on every page i see around 1000 posts all jacking him off telling him how amazing he is.. theres gotta be at least some representation of what other musicans are feeling besides mayerheads. To me the things he says and plays are truly offensive and scince i am forced to hear them on radio at least 3 times a day somewhere i feel this is the only way to express myself at this time. He is a showoff with a giant ego.. his music is fake, not original or sincere.. FUCK JOHN MAYER

  • How is he being a wannabe?? He's just doing a tribute to SRV... So is everyone that does a cover of a SRV a wannabe?? I don't c anything wrong with this? He is getting more people into the blues so whats the problem?

  • All you guys who bitch about Mayer.. I would how well you guys can actually play the guitar..

Spend more time respecting and appreciating the music. If you dont like it, dont watch it..

  • I completely agree. Quit posting how smart you are on the internet, and realize that every good musician finds their niche. Enjoy the video or stay quiet. Thanks.

  • @golfustevan @xtopheraaron You are both so RIGHT! John Mayer is an Awsome GUITAR player and Singer

  • That is true, Mayer is a great guitar player, I just really like his style and music. There is a few songs I like from him, but he just doesn't have the sound and style I like when listening to the Blues, when he plays it.

  • Nice one mate agree totally well said. Johns just doin his thing!

  • @xtopheraaron what if we watch it and hate it? isnt this America? we cant comment on it?

  • And I never said that I am wonderful or better than Mayer, and there are way better gutiar players than Mayer who impress me more, and who mean more for blues than Mayer!

Plus like I said I am not 10/10 wonderful, but I still am sure that you are nothing special as you say, so fuck of!

  • CLEARLY, I think this might be the third time I'm saying it; but I am NO blues master.

I also think you need to listen to some B.B. King.

  • Neither am I man! I see he is influenced by B.B King, and he actually plays his licks, and read it again dude! I never said he doesn't play B.B. stuff, he does but for little! He much more plays, acts, and spreads out himself as a SRV wannabe!

  • A quote

"It doesn't need a fool to see that Mayer is copying and acting like SRV in this video way more than B.B King!"

Contradicting yourself now because you see that I am right?

  • Once again especially for you wise guy! It seems you don't see or hear very well, so once again for you:

I never said that he doesn't sound a like as B.B King, and he plays actually his licks, but the playing, style, acting (as the whole package) is complete SRV! That is all what I been saying all this time!

  • Another quote from you:

"I hear SRV not B.B King, cause Mayer is just a fake musician with no real talent and true style! Yes you can hear a bit of BB. King, but he is playing 100% ripping of SRV note for note, that is bad and shity!"

    Still, contradicting yourself.

  • Again what I said for over 10 times you smarty ass, BB King licks in this video : yes, and the whole attitude, performance, style, and acting is SRV : again yes!

And yeah, BB. King licks are in it, but he actually acts and plays complete in the style of SRV! Don't know what is your problem!

  • No, I'm pretty sure I'm seeing John Mayer in this video, not SRV.

  • Yeah you are right! I too see John Mayer who is SRV wannabe, pop shit and really nothing special!

  • Post yourself doing better.

Then maybe you'll get some respect.

  • For the 100th time monster88888,

I didn't said that I am better than him, where are you getting these kind of fake informations?

Are you so fuckin stupid or what? Did your mother again send you stupid to school or what?

I just said that he is a totall fake musician, and that he acts a lot like a SRV wannabe, he proves it here with a bit of B.B King touch and licks, but as the whole thing, he sucks and does nothing special!

  • Well unless you do better then him, I can't take any of your comments seriously.

Because I TOO am a musician, and by your account you've been studying and playing for 4 years. Yeah well I'm on 7. And I think he is a fantastic blues player.

  • Well whatever dude, if you think that this guy is any good, than fuck it! I can't change your mind! You obviously gotta learn more to see those details I am speaking about here, but take your time man! I think that Mayer sucks and that there are way better guitar players and musicians today who aren't such a wannabe and shity as John Mayer who is a SRV wannabe when it comes to blues, but when it comes to aynthing else, he is just a pop star!

  • That's great that you take such pride on your opinion. But remember that it is only an opinion. If Mayer becomes a legend or not, only time will tell.

  • Yah and you are definately not one of those guitar players or musicians. Not to mention, you don't know shit about music! Who do I sound like now?

  • @grga888 yes, why don't u?

  • Until you can come up with a convincing video that proves to me that you are a better blues musician then Mr. Mayer here, I'm going to assume your a 16 year old kid with no life other than his computer.

And just so you know, I am 17, and by no means a blues master, although I do play.

  • And you are like any better than me mr. wise guy? By what? I play the guitar, and I study music a lot, so shut up! I am really fed up with you!

It doesn't need a fool to see that Mayer is copying and acting like SRV in this video way more than B.B King! I am not saying that I am better than Mayer or that I am jealous at him, I am just saying that he sucks, and that he is nowhere near to the legends and gods of blues, and there are guitarists way better than Mayer, way better!

  • Clearly, I did indeed say that I was no blues master, and if you think your so wonderful, why don't you post a video of yourself playing?

And those are some of the most famous B.B. King licks I am hearing Mr. Mayer play. I never said he was a god of blues now did I?

If I can secure myself a camera and the time, I would be happy to post a video of myself playing.

And I would be happy to critique yours.

    But until then, grow up.

  • So THAT's how John Mayer got famous - by impersonating SRV - NOW I like this guy. I HATED that WONDERLAND shit he sang. Still too nerdy to be a true rock star. sorry.

  • Please post an original blues tune with YOU playing then, and stop ragging on the guy till you prove to US that YOU can do better.

  • cont'd.....As much as I love SRV,Clapton<hendrix etc...they all visited those same sources..the music library if you like...and still manage to make great music..John Mayer should be cut some slack here because he's clearly been influenced by a previous generation of guitaists...but to me is still very individual if not unique!

  • As someone who likes to "LISTEN" to many great players not just in the field of blues...I have to say that unless your Stanley Jordan...you're really not likely to re-invent the the guitar..but when we all study things about life don't we gain reference from "familiar" relevant sources..ie:books,media ,music etc etc...

  • use grga88 as an example of what not to do or ever be, grga88 will never do anything with his life because he hates on others that are way better than him, if anyone in there right mind thinks he sounds more like srv than bb in this particular video than they are idiots, from now on i want everyone who watches this vid to post wheter it sounds like bbking or stevie, its obvious that he does and it doest take a genius to see that.

  • Clearly grga888 he is trying more to emulate BB King then SRV here.

It's obvious by his tone and the licks he's playing.

  • I hear SRV not B.B King, cause Mayer is just a fake musician with no real talent and true style! Yes you can hear a bit of BB. King, but he is playing 100% ripping of SRV note for note, that is bad and shity!

Check out the tone, licks, sound. aproach, all SRV! of course Mayer does it worser, cause he sucks!

  • LOL, clearly you do not know your blues.

Those are B.B. King licks that SRV plays.

Hence they are still B.B. King licks, not SRV's.

And if you think you can do better then John Mayer, feel free to post a video of you playing the blues.

  • utterly hopeless

  • again Read A Book

  • Furthermore, all music is based off of scales/chords .and guess what srv used em too despite what you may think. this cat is better than any fucking head ive seen on youtube , guess what blues itself is a rip off of african tribal music and gospel hyms , with that i say Peace to Robert Johnson WHose story about him and the devil was in turn ripped off of lesser known tommy johnson .

Read a fucking book archamedies. JM just as good as srv, even srvs old band played with him. clapton, guy etc.

  • people who think this dude is fake , are nothing if not ignorant. john mayer isnt a god of guitar . why is that because everygreat guitarist your gonna say somthing about is DEAD. this vhead is keeping it alive and motherfuckers hate on him. everyone who plays blues or has any musical knowledge knows that guitaist ( any instrumentalist actually) cover other peoples songs all the time. i mean do you think you just pick up a guitar an like instantly play your own riffs .

  • SRV's version is 1000 times better!

  • Congrats grga on having a sad and lonely enough life that rather than spend your free time enriching your short time here on earth by enjoying something, you would rather check Y-tube all day and search for songs you don't like to write negative things. You are one pathetic loser, no offense...PS - I don't even care for Mayer one way or other, only SRV will forever have my guitar-lovin' heart . . SRV would've been terribly disappointed in your actions.

  • Bluesbrothers615 for President!!!

  • lol bitch go learn to play a guitar and quit hatin on those who can

  • you must not play guitar because any guitar player who hears this guy play blues has alot of respect for his music. but hey man its cool bro, i dont expect you to understand what its all about. maybe one day when you pick up a guitar and get real then you'll realize what ur saying about this mans guitar skillz is whack. and you'll realize that its jjust jealousy that ur feeling.

  • Read it again fat boy:

He has no mark,in any way he sucks!

And as as a person, individual, guitar player is all crap!

A boring rip off dude who sings pop, pretends to play blues, and can't play!

    I call that shit!

  • ....... now.. if he played it exactly like Stevie Ray than it really wouldnt be that original would it? Now its a great thing that hes paying homage to the blues greats and if you want to sit back and rip on a great blues man like this than feel free because its not gonna matter so no matter what you say or do hes gonna be rememberd long after you and I die for what he does best.... GUITAR PLAYING, and i think hes left his mark on the blues game ........... so STOP HATING!!!!!!!

  • He left no mark!

He is a boring rip off dude who sings pop and who can't play guitar!

    Totally bad in any way!

  • if hes left no mark then y does he have 4 signature guitars that r some of fenders best selling guitars

  • He has no mark!

    Screw that guitar brand!

Fender's best guitars are SRV's Number One,Hendrix's Woodstock Strat and Clapton's Blackie! That is wow and a mark from those guys!

But Mayer as a person, individual, guitar player is all crap!

A boring rip off dude who sings pop, pretends to play blues, and can't play!

    I call that shit!

  • dude i've been on like 4 mayer videos today and youve commented like all of them.

you obviously hate mayer, no one cares. personally i think hes a great blues man if he wasnt he wouldnt have played with double trouble, buddy guy, bb king, and eric clapton.

youre just a brainless dickhead who decided hed hate mayer because he gets way more poon than you. you probably cant play the guitar worth shit.

  • He has no mark,in any way he sucks!

And as as a person, individual, guitar player is all crap!

A boring rip off dude who sings pop, pretends to play blues, and can't play!

    I call that shit!

  • This song was originally recorded/performed (as well as composed) by Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones back in the mid-1950s, with Ray Charles on piano.

  • kenny wayne is the only guy i know of that can reproduce that sound

  • The guitar sounds nothing like Stevie and he John did a terrible job of it!!!

  • you're hearing this song but now feeling it. when you figure out the difference get back with us.

  • I love hearing it when Stevie does it he puts his heart and soul into it like he did with all his music!! RIP Stevie!! I will miss him but he will always live in my heart!!!

  • Yes this is a Guitar Slim song and you should listen to his version and SRV's also. The difference is Guitar Slims is in a swing feel although its played very slowly. I don't feel the swing when John and Stevie play it. In Guitar Slims version the horns are playing the swing right with the bass, this helps to accent the song and the feel of the song. Who cares who can put a million guitar licks in a song? Play it with feeling and hire a couple of basic horns players.

  • This is not a SRV tune its by Eddie Jones aka

Guitar Slim. And to all this guy is good but not a dyed in the wool blues player. There are many who play blues with much more feel and respect, and he is not really that original kind of waterd down Clapton.

But if he brings a new understanding to the music perhaps it will help bring blues back as others have

    Peace

  • John Mayer sounds so much like SRV. I love his voice. I want to hear a Pride And Joy Cover, if he hasn't already done it. That would kick some ass.

  • Wow....you are so wrong. There is NO guitarists worth anything left today, except for Eric Clapton. This is nothing like SRV, and never will be. Respect the elders.

  • That clearly proves your ignorance, short minded-ness, and childish unwillingness to accept fresh new voices and sounds into your life. John Mayer plays with a a technical prowess not seen since the likes of Vaughan. He even admits himself that no one could play with Vaughan's intensity. You should be grateful that there are even young guys (like John) worth a shit that acknowledge & pay homage to the greats like Hendrix and Vaughan when many of today's artists dont even care about them anymore

  • why is it that just because SRV and Jimi are dead and gone there is this notion that no one will ever be as good as them? there was Johnson, then Muddy, then Hendrix comes and it's like omg. then Stevie starts and it's like "holy shit stevie could kick jimi's ass up and down the fretboard without even trying."

someone will always eventually come along who's better. maybe mayer's the one. maybe not. however, i'm not a huge mayer fan. yes he's amazingly decent, but i dont see anything special.

  • nobodys better than stevie....its just the truth....

  • who cares if he has a tattoo. srv is amazing. john mayer is on his way there and can play more than a fraction as good as srv although he will never amount to his greatness. bold as love. mayer covered that song and did it just as much justice as hendrix could have asked. you do that and then you can call mayer a candy ass bubble gum artist. until then be quiet because he's better at guitar than you or anyone you will ever know.

  • Mayer merely lifts SRV and Clapton blues licks and plays them sort of quickly and with a watered-down, boutique amp tone. There's nothing inspired or great about that.

There are A LOT of guitarists who can play better than Mayer, rest assured.

Blues is a language people, not merely a scale.

There's a song by Canned Heat and John Lee Hooker on the album "Hooker N Heat" called "Burning Hell"

    Thats the essence of blues.

Go listen to it and understand.

  • it's just funny how everyone on this site talk all this shit about all these artists...well they got where they are cause they had something... bubblegum artist who cares I've never played sold out shows anywhere and I'm willing to say neither have you so dream on and stfu

  • john mayer is amazing... he has an SRV tattoo for christ sake... if you had the chance to play SRV songs in front of thousands wouldn't you? of course you would... no one cares who measures up to who... SRV, Jimi, and John are all amazing... stfu about it haha

  • sure mayer is good, but he wrote your body is a wonder land...sell out? if he would just play some freaking blues itd be fine....but no one will ever ever ever mesure up to SRV.....or Jimi

  • Well said.

  • SRV is amazing, but Mayer is a close 2nd. I hate how any douchebag with a fucking digital camera can play a Stevie or Jimi song, throw it on YouTube, and every body is all "OmG!!1 YoU fUcKiNg RuLe LoLoL" but as soon as Mayer tries to pay tribute to one of his idols, everybody practically has a fucking stroke over it saying that he isn't as good as SRV or Jimi. Go out and play in front of thousands of people and play it better in you think you can tear it up better than Mayer, asshole.

  • dude your my hero. You just summed up all my thoughts on critics in one paragraph

  • theyre not critics, theyre jerks

  • theyre not critics, theyre jerks

  • theyre not critics, theyre jerks

  • theyre not critics, theyre jerks

  • I love john but it's srv who even made john want to pick up a guitaar in the first place. SRV FOREVER

  • why cant we all be friends

    great video kinda short tho

  • this isnt a nesicarily a stevie cover, it was originally done by guitar slim

  • and as far as do you're research.. I could tell you the goddamn key, beats per minuet, year released, instrumentation, and total number of 7ths played in 12 different versions of this song song along with any other "blues cover" this Berkelee rat plays, so don't try to condescend me

  • and finally, so this isn't all malicious, my overarching point is.. why go see this spoiled celebrity play half ass versions of blues songs when you can go out to festivals and clubs in your own communities and see people who actually care a lot about this music do a way better job? Or pick through the racks of your local record stores and hear some really amazing versions of the same stuff? You can get three records for the price of a John Mayer ticket and hear it as many times as you want!

  • and second.. yeah he's a hack...Blues is a genre of subtly, not just being able to run some scales quickly. Pretty much semicompetent musician should be able to do that.. In this performance, in particular, I see no subtly and no indication that he has any real relationship with the genre outside of listening to SRV a few times... and if you think thats an over statement... clearly neither do you.

  • YOU ARE GAY! that is a huge overstatement. Haha geez. Oh my, you are the 'semicompetent' one my friend. You obviously haven't listened to other songs done by Mayer because 'less is more' can apply to 60% of his new music... which is a huge base for blues and jazz itself. You apparently watched this video and then said to yourself, man, he's predominantly playing quick riffs and scales in this song so he has no idea what blues is. Geez! Nothing gets past you right?!?! ;];] Do your research fag!

  • I was trying to make aesthetic point but apparently homophpobia is a stronger retort than actually listening to music.

  • and "less is more" is entirely simplifying the point. Making no reference to the deep complexity of the past is! And still I see no answer to the real question... why support this guy when there are better players out there who can hardly afford to eat... go see Magic Slim before he dies.

  • Dude, I'm not knocking you.. I am into some people that probably one out of a hundred thousand people have heard of so I support who you're talking about. But like Tony Rice, one of the cleanest, flatpickers on the plant, how many twenty-year-olds do you think I've met know who he is and appreciate him??...The best guitarists in the world (in general.. there are some that have) will never make it into a solid mainstream, because their music is too complex for that of the typical listeners.

  • So when guys like John Mayer break through... How can you knock that?? How many people do you think are trying to play bluesy stuff now, and learn more scales, and trying to play more quality $#$@ than they were because of John Mayer?? Just think, if Mayer wouldn't have caught their attention, it would've been some same-old shredding guitarist who they learned how to turn up every damn distortion/gain knob on their rigs and made up the same old stuff.. But because of John Mayer... VVVV

  • There are people that are getting into quality stuff now that might not have even picked up a guitar in other conditions, or might not have even listened to anything close to this music in other cases! SRV's backing has probably tripled in younger generation people because of Mayer. So don't you dare knock him and what he's done.. And as far as the research comment, the point of it was that you haven't listened to enough of Mayer's stuff.

  • If you went to a John Mayer concert, you would easily see why people like him. He's intelligent, and very witty. He's always saying clever things that people really relate to. And even though I like amazing guitarists that will never make mainstream, a lot of times they play good stuff but it's all very similar. Mayer offers a lot of different styles if you go to a concert. I'm tired of making my point, idc if you like Mayer, I know why others and myself do. If you don't like, don't comment!!

  • By saying it is weird to say "cover" a blues song I mean that people usually associate "covers" with playing a song not written by them. Since the majority of blues is played from a cannon of standard songs, it seems wrong to consider them covers. After all blues blurs the idea of what it means to write a song. Every blues song is a cover, and if its not its engulfed by the genre and becomes one. So why even use the word? If you think I'm crazy go listen to a Muddy Waters interview.

  • it's a Guitar Slim song, SRV just covered it. decent cover here, though.

  • he is on the level with clapton but no one can be so good as SRV

  • John can play like SRV better than anybody i've ever heard. SRV was his biggest influence and you can really hear it in his playing

  • man give him respect he play very much with clapton

  • I understand John Mayer can play but... he isnt at the level of eric or stevie

  • I thought it was alright.

  • I don't like most of his songs either...I think they're quite too much pop u know? But u can never say he can't cover stevie's music. He's a wonderful guitarist, and it's truth that nor he nor anyone will never play like SRV, but I love to hear his guitar and his peculiar way to play. It's great.

  • I go with the point claptonhendrix1 was making earlier. This guy is very very good, but not in same league as SRV or James Marshall H. I get the feeling that he had to work at it really hard to get close to that tone and technique, whereas SRV and Jimi were just natural born stratmeisters.

  • I seriously doubt that you know what "natural born" or hard work means. It's well known that Jimi played so much, he often fell asleep with his guitar in his hands. That's called hard work. And despite what everyone thinks, Jimi was no virtuoso, he was solidly blues based. Jimi's gift was to pull all the right elements together in a hard rock context.

  • Virtuoso=" skilled in the technique of a fine art, especially music". The OED quote will do for me so Jimi qualifies! Re the hard work comment, you can F**K off ! I've put the gighours in for 30 yrs-The point is that Jimi brought innovation to the art along with soul and feel. Mayer IS good, but he's just a parasite who's worked hard to clone the big boys.Who will remember him in 35 yrs?- NOBODY!

  • You don't know shit. But it doesn't matter, nobody will remember your opinion in 35 years either.

  • haha owned

  • Whatever. Know how I know you're gay?

  • I was referring to you owning him cuz its true

  • he's right... although, 35 years from now, Mayer may still be alive, and perhaps still playing, so i doubt people will forget his guitar playing

  • you guys are total idiots for putting JM down. You act defensive as if JM thinks he's doing it better or the same a SRV; He idolizes SRV as he does clapton, hendrix and bbking. So you can say you dont like his verison is fine but to say he sucks and he's not a good guitarist and die it tottally retarded he has some great great song and he i believe to the fullest no one has ever or will be better than Mayer at mixing pop and blues. SRV is more blues / rock ; same as bbking

  • Regardless... It is a good performance of a classic blues song. Enjoy, or don't.

  • This isn't a cover of SRV, period. This is a Guitar Slim song. SRV covered it as well, in his own way.

  • jspartacus, I didn't know Guitar Slim wrote this and that Chuck Berry covered it... interesting. The first version I heard was by Albert Collins, who was one of SRV's main influences and who probably inspired Stevie to cover it. Collins' version is excellent.

  • wow this is a terrible version of a great great song
