technique to me is the hardest thing ive come across in my years playing bass...there are so many expressive ways to hit the strings...guys like this could play this blind folded because its just a natural extension..its so much on feel..hard to explain but this guy is one of the greats mark king that is!
You make no sense. Put your man crush aside for a second and realize this isn' about anyone comparing themselves to Mark King. He's for sure a great technician but his music sucks. Speed and percussive technique are way down the list on what makes a good bass player. But you people wouldn't know anything about that because you can't see past your gay lust - disgusting.
Haha, as if your opinion matters, all that you have to say is gay this and gay that. Seems like you're stuck in the closet aye? It's okay, I won't tell anyone.
Got anything to say about music or bass playing at all? I hear the Mark King fan club has space for a a couple more fans to add to the 5 long standing members... lol!
I don't need to say anything, you're making yourself look foolish by making a comparison between music and being gay. Oh by the way, I wouldn't even say I'm a fan, because I'm happy to admit I can't play slap bass, because of the simple fact I don't like it. So I guess that means I can't appreciate it by your logic either? If we're all so gay, then why are you sticking around on this video, looking to score? Also, you've said nothing about music or bass playing that's worth saying.
The man is a bass genius... Take a look at the bbc2 programme "in sight & Sound" from 1983, level 42 live at the Regal in Hitchin. His playing is unbelievable and he had only first picked up a bass 4 years earlier. His early drumming background shines through as a bass player. He could make a £100 bass from argos sound like a million dollars. There are lots of people on you tube with "all the gear and no idea". Mark is the King!!!!!
unbelievable. Mark really pushes the tone and response well into the upper limits of that series 2 alembic bass like no other bass player can. this is the definition of bass perfection.
This is THE best live video of L42 technically wise. God knows why it isn't on DVD! It reminds me of other total no-brainer like leaving Mr Pink out of the Physical Presence live CD too. This concert lacks a little soul sometimes but Mark more than makes up for it with just pure guts. L42 sounds 'king excellent with John Thirkill and Gary barnacle together - more classic funk sounding with the strong brass. Mr. Pink on this gig is AMAZING
johnpizarelli wrote: how is it possible to play that fast with that knda tone?- well, alembic basses are known for their lightning fast response and fluid clean tone (legendary). they are explosive and clean at the same time. they are extremely easy to play too- i've played one before.
yeah those exotic low pass filters on that thing defines it's main tonal character. nothing else like it in the world. that bass retails for over $15k brand new.
i play status kingbasses and in my opinion ..the kingbass wins on all counts ..owned a stanley clarke alembic ..both basses are fast , they have 16.5 string spacing hence a thinner (faster) neck profile .. found kingbass to be pure in tone + very quick to find another good tone...and i mean really good tone...
I'm sorry, but your argument just holds NO water! Are you saying if you or I, or even an experienced bass-player picked up the same guitar we'd sound almost as good, if not just as good? Hogwash! It's ALWAYS the man behind the machine that counts. A better tool or instrument simply helps a more proficient player make the best of what they have. Mark King playing a $149 department store special would smoke most bassists playing his $12,000 Alembic. It's the MAN, not the machine!
I have performed on NZ national TV playing Mr. Pink with a bass solo on my JD. I think the trickiest bit would be getting the finger line done at the end as my reach is a little small, but the slap part has a reconstituted 'Sandstorm' in it which is relatively straight forward. I need this bass for speed and tone.
have you seen the wembley 1986 version of this? its not as fast as this but i think its better. gotta love mark king. to play the way he does while singing is just not human!!!
is this concert available on dvd? If not, it should be, because from what I've seen of it it involves some serious (classic)100mph playing from Mark throughout. The speed of his hands combined with the amount of mechanical movement and power involved in his playing render it utterly awe inspiring. In a world of brilliant bass players, this guy HAS to be my favourite. SO badass.

The only white bass players are Stue Hamm and Jaco... This is some guitar player who by mistake picked up a bass!

Love the way Gary Husband on drums licks with the bass. Ex L42 drummer Phil Gould was the same. Perfect harmony! and tighter than a nun's crack!

Rather not, Not having even the slightest respect for mark's bass playing clearly shows you have sucky tastes :)
