@Nacho66 They sure do, but that was the era. I remember the snare especially didn't even sound like a snare. Sounded like a fire cracker or something other than what it was supposed to sound like. Then again, those Simmons were all the rage at that point.
Those Simmons Drums sound exactly like Bruford wanted them to sound. He plays a Simmons SDX, which is basically a sample player. Each pad has seven zone layers with different samples on each zone. Plus you can assign different samples depending on how hard you hit the zone. Makes 21 samples per pad. I doubt you can distinguish 21 different sounds a single drum can produce.
Not being ignorant. I've been a working professional musician for over 28 years and hold these guys in the highest esteem. That said, my ears, obviously, still work and those drums sound like absolute rubbish.
They sound like a metal trash can rolling down a fire escape at 4AM.
You still don't get it. These Drums can sound exactly like a conventional drumkit, and on a recording even you as a professional won't be able to tell the difference. What you don't seem to get is: Bruford WANTED these drums to sound exactly like this. He programmed them to sound like these "metal trash can". It's a sample player, you can let it sound like whatever you want.
Tony Levin is too cool! Check out the denim shorts. You know why he can wear those shorts? Because he's a badass! That's why. Before there was Les Claypool, there was Tony Levin.
I wonder if Tony has seen this and cringed at his wardrobe choice that day.....
