the audio is indeed not good ! I record my piano videos with a ZOOM Q3, and the video with the Kodak Zi8 the audio for the piano is just terrible with this microphone but well :) it isn't make for that :) ... but the video is awsome,
also little question ... can you delete ALL videos at onces ? or do you need to delete every video 1 by 1 ?
if you connect the zi8 to your tv, can you see what you see on the screen of the zi8 on your tv? if so, im just gonna buy a long hdmi cable, and connect it to my tv, so i can see what im recording!

maybe it's my camara but this zi8 was a fucking doorstop for a couple of months...it would'nt read any of the sdhc class 6 cards...tried transcend-kingston,ect--even went straight to the overpriced kodak store and bought one from them..that lasted for 20 vids...eventually i went to wal-mart (killed me to walk in that store) and grab a sandisk sdhc class 4 and the frigin' thing works great...my sd cards for all my electronic toys are now SanDisk.....that's my story and i'm stickin' to it :-)
Hey Man.. My zi8 now refuses to upload to Youtube! Seriously, I've tried it on 5 unrelated computers now and NADA.. ZIP.. Nothing will upload.. the upload status bar goes to 100%, and then says "Not Connected to Internet" try again later.. This sucks!! Do you know why this is happening? It just started doing this last week.. I've got 85 easy uploads, and now nothing!

Can anyone tell me why on earth the zi8 has face detection AND a fixed lens??? Doesn't make sense to have face detection if the lens is fixed. Am I missing something here?
`david.. i have a question.. okay my gf has the zi8 and ive never really messed with it but i got ahold of it and it died while i was recording so i grabbed the charger not seeing that it had a wall mount plug in that the cord which has a usb thing to connect to the wall mount plugin or whatever well anyway i didnt see the wall plug in and i plugged it straight into the computer and after that i then saw the tag sayin not to plug into the computer which i already did and now the camera wont work
Do you know what the file size limit is on the zi8 ? With the Zx3 that I have, the file size limit is just under 4 Gigs. The zi8 has variable compression encoding vs constant bit encoding, this means that the zi8 should be able to squeeze more video within x amount of file space vs the zx3.
@patti96815 build quality, if its easy to remove when it wears after use it will just fall of and not stay on some of my old mobile phones did this and its annoying a hard to remove cover is more durable
The quality is unacceptable. Nowhere near HD. I was told it was designed to be an "outside" camera. My iPhone 4s camera blows it far out of the water. So its not due to faulty lighting. Inside my room with good lighting it is just blurry as hell. With macro setting ON its ok. But I cant shoot a whole video that close to the lens.
really enjoyed your Q and A man. You seem pretty knowledgeable about the common facts of todays pocket cameras. I've been searching for about 3 weeks for the best pocket camera i could find (price not an issue) in the zi8, flip, etc style, and this camera seems to have won me over.
I'm looking into this camera, but one of my gripes with my Kodak camera is the fact that the video is in .mov and doesn't cooperate well with my PC. What editing software for PC works well with .mov files? (Don't say Premiere, I've tried it and I don't like it)
@kyle51895 i also been through the same trying different softwares but here is a solution. you can use windows movie maker. you need to download media player codec pack, just google it. once installed you can use windows moive maker to edit .mov videos.

I have a Zi8 and I can not turn off the sound. Whether the speaker icon with sound waves is displayed or the icon of the speaker without sound waves in displayed, sound is still recorded when I play back the video on the camera. Any suggestions?
I think you people should shop around. Amazon is not the cheapest person to buy this cam from. I got mine last month and boy it is everything I was looking for and then some. I have ordered a bunch of accessories for the cam too, waiting for them to be delivered. But I would shop around. Think about refurbished too they are way cheaper and they come with a 90 day warranty.
@Zebraboy19 I bought it for 50 bucks, you think that is a good deal? I got it off ebay, I thought I tried my luck its very brand new as well! like the owner only used it like 3 times in his life lol. I order 60 items off ebay, 59 out of 60 the item were in perfect shape, one of them was broken which was a 10 dollar tripod, my luck has been good.
@SourLashy 50 bucks is a great deal! This camera is the best one I have ever owned. I sold my old mini dvd camcorder on ebay. I hardly ever used that thing but this camera I use all the time. The quality is outstanding. I am finally able to produce video's I have seen others produce. I have bought well over 350 items on ebay and only had a couple of problems so yeah ebay remains one of my main internet buying sites. :)

@zCORM4C Ordering my Zi8 now (off Amazon) and i am ordering it with a Transcend 16GB class 10 card. Although you don't need a class 10, the price difference is only one pound. If you would like to save the pound then order a class 6 card. Any HDSC 4GB - 32GB class 6+ card will work with the Zi8.
Do you know if it can receive output HDMI? Like, I want to record my TV without holding the camera in front of the TV. I want to get the output of the TV onto the camera so I can record just the screen.
I have a question. You mentioned about the SDHC card class 6. Do you know if the Class 10 will work as well. It writes faster and your able to transfer data from the card to the computer faster. I was just wondering if the class 10 cards work. THANKS!
I've seen other reviews that say the image stabilization isn't very good. I have a Zi6 and image stabilization was the biggest problem. It doesn't have EIS and if you don't use a tripod with it the video will make you nauseous. One more thing, if you shake the Zi8 do you hear a rattle? The retractable usb connector on the Zi6 rattles if the camera is moving. The noise is really amplified by the internal mic.
@MochaShow All pro editing software can use MOV files. They are the least compressed file format I know, which is good for quality, but not for file size. Mov files work perfect in both premiere pro & sony vegas. Get a free trial of either of them online. I prefer Premiere Pro.
@Halocaveman I use a Kodak Zi8 HD and it records great,even for the sound. If you have Windows (like myself) you will need sn encoder/converter. My friend uses a flip and from my view a flip is like the Ford model T, a a video camera everyone can afford. It's smaller,maybe more popular and costs about $50 less. The Kodak does have easyshare software and great playback. If you can afford it ($200) get the Zi8.
Hello David. I have one question. How long the battery can withstand? I mean, how long you can recording. Becouse I intend to buy Kodak zi8 with accumulator or Kodak zx1 with two AA bateries that can be replaced, and record more.
Do not get this if you plan on using Sony Vegas to edit your footage. Sony Vegas does not read the audio codec produced by the Zi8. All of the fixes of this take a long time and worsen the audio/video quality. This is the problem I ran into, luckily my family has a mac and I have Adobe After Effects to edit on, but that just take too long and is too complicated for a quick video.
i have a Zi8 and when i burn the videos to a DVD, I am not able to play them on my HD TV, or on another computer. I am so disappointed with this camera. Any suggestions. I want to be able to send DVD's to family members.
My autofocus is really bad on my zi8. Otherwise its a great camera, but it really bothers me when making a video about my iPhone or something and it won't focus. Is this is a setting that can be changed or does the camera just have bad focus?

Very informative, thanks. A couple questions, are you aware of any do it yourself videos on how to make a homemade fisheye for the zi8? And also, when I add footage from the zi8 into imovie and then convert it into quicktime, to share on say, facebook, the picture quality dramatically decreases. @ColombianEskimo check out usbfever.com, they have inexpensive wide angle and fisheye lenses for use with the iphone. I have a Zi6 and they work great, the lenses are magnetic and come with little metal rings that you attach around the camera's lens then the lenses just attach to the rings. I wouldn't recommend the fisheye it distorts the video to much for my taste.
Okay i just got the Kodak zi8 in the mail today along with my SanDisk Extreme 8gb class 6 SDHC memory card. Unfortunately, when the memory card is inserted and the camera is turned on it stays on for about 5 seconds and then freezes. I have to remove the battery to turn it off. But without the memory card the zi8 is fine. It's a memory card problem and i need to find one that will work. Can you help? Will the one in the description work?
while trying to record some video at a mets game i just realized that you cant pause and unpause while recording a video on the zi8. thats kind of stupid considering my rca small wonder can do it. why would kodak leave out such a simple yet useful feature?
@janeenrocks5 its useful if you are recording something where theres a lull in the action, you pause for a few secs and resume. a lot easier than having ten short clips that you have to edit together because pausing it keeps the clips in the same "video"
Im using XP and I want to know what editing software will edit the Zi8 MOV files?..and I would like to be able to mix 3 files and sync with audio from my Zoom H2?
With the sound quality i have to disagree. I recorded my bike and played it directly on tv through the hdmi, and the sound of my harley came out really well, great base quality!

@zCORM4C Ordering my Zi8 now (off Amazon) and i am ordering it with a Transcend 16GB class 10 card. Although you don't need a class 10, the price difference is only one pound. If you would like to save the pound then order a class 6 card. Any HDSC 4GB - 32GB class 6+ card will work with the Zi8.

Do you know if it can receive output HDMI? Like, I want to record my TV without holding the camera in front of the TV. I want to get the output of the TV onto the camera so I can record just the screen.

I have a question. You mentioned about the SDHC card class 6. Do you know if the Class 10 will work as well. It writes faster and your able to transfer data from the card to the computer faster. I was just wondering if the class 10 cards work. THANKS!

I've seen other reviews that say the image stabilization isn't very good. I have a Zi6 and image stabilization was the biggest problem. It doesn't have EIS and if you don't use a tripod with it the video will make you nauseous. One more thing, if you shake the Zi8 do you hear a rattle? The retractable usb connector on the Zi6 rattles if the camera is moving. The noise is really amplified by the internal mic.

I despise the fact it does movies in .MOV format. Windows is used by far more people than Apple because of work or the price.

@MochaShow All pro editing software can use MOV files. They are the least compressed file format I know, which is good for quality, but not for file size. Mov files work perfect in both premiere pro & sony vegas. Get a free trial of either of them online. I prefer Premiere Pro.

@Halocaveman I use a Kodak Zi8 HD and it records great,even for the sound. If you have Windows (like myself) you will need sn encoder/converter. My friend uses a flip and from my view a flip is like the Ford model T, a a video camera everyone can afford. It's smaller,maybe more popular and costs about $50 less. The Kodak does have easyshare software and great playback. If you can afford it ($200) get the Zi8.

Hello David. I have one question. How long the battery can withstand? I mean, how long you can recording. Becouse I intend to buy Kodak zi8 with accumulator or Kodak zx1 with two AA bateries that can be replaced, and record more.

Do not get this if you plan on using Sony Vegas to edit your footage. Sony Vegas does not read the audio codec produced by the Zi8. All of the fixes of this take a long time and worsen the audio/video quality. This is the problem I ran into, luckily my family has a mac and I have Adobe After Effects to edit on, but that just take too long and is too complicated for a quick video.

i have a Zi8 and when i burn the videos to a DVD, I am not able to play them on my HD TV, or on another computer. I am so disappointed with this camera. Any suggestions. I want to be able to send DVD's to family members.

My autofocus is really bad on my zi8. Otherwise its a great camera, but it really bothers me when making a video about my iPhone or something and it won't focus. Is this is a setting that can be changed or does the camera just have bad focus?

how do i put the videos on dvd? im having trouble figuring it out. Online says you need a converter but ive downloaded 2 different ones & none of them worked. Can you help? Ive contacted Kodak & they said they dont recommed doing it cuz it ruins the video quality. All i wanna do is put them on dvd, it shouldnt be this hard right? Thanks!

Very informative, thanks. A couple questions, are you aware of any do it yourself videos on how to make a homemade fisheye for the zi8? And also, when I add footage from the zi8 into imovie and then convert it into quicktime, to share on say, facebook, the picture quality dramatically decreases. Is there a way to retain the picture quality when sharing videos I made on imovie and then posting them on facebook? Thanks

@ColombianEskimo check out usbfever.com, they have inexpensive wide angle and fisheye lenses for use with the iphone. I have a Zi6 and they work great, the lenses are magnetic and come with little metal rings that you attach around the camera's lens then the lenses just attach to the rings. I wouldn't recommend the fisheye it distorts the video to much for my taste.

Okay i just got the Kodak zi8 in the mail today along with my SanDisk Extreme 8gb class 6 SDHC memory card. Unfortunately, when the memory card is inserted and the camera is turned on it stays on for about 5 seconds and then freezes. I have to remove the battery to turn it off. But without the memory card the zi8 is fine. It's a memory card problem and i need to find one that will work. Can you help? Will the one in the description work?

actually the onboard mic sounds incredible compared to most onboard mics on similar cams.
The Aiptek cameras are HD, and have external mic in, and 360 rotating monitors - some have good audio, some do not.

while trying to record some video at a mets game i just realized that you cant pause and unpause while recording a video on the zi8. thats kind of stupid considering my rca small wonder can do it. why would kodak leave out such a simple yet useful feature?

@janeenrocks5 its useful if you are recording something where theres a lull in the action, you pause for a few secs and resume. a lot easier than having ten short clips that you have to edit together because pausing it keeps the clips in the same "video"

With the sound quality i have to disagree. I recorded my bike and played it directly on tv through the hdmi, and the sound of my harley came out really well, great base quality!
