It can, but it's not the same thing. With a live tree (especially if it hasn't been watered, so is dry), you have a highly flammable and explosive situation - it's one of fire's favorite fuels. A fake tree is more of a burning plastic situation, and depends entirely on the materials used. Most modern trees are fire resistant, read the box/maunal that it came with to find out more - it may tell you . If not, contact the manufacturer, they should be able to give you good info.
