The plane exploded apart in the air. Pieces of flaming wreckage would have shot in all directions.

at about 42 second mark, pilot describes the "light" coming at him prior to the explosion

I would say that the Eastwind pilot was observing the aircraft on fire, which might well have seemed like a bright landing light.
