I am not an expert, from a technical point of view, is it possible to combine this demo - "Simulating Realistic Hair" with the "Creation Engine" (Skyrim )......Also, I heard that the Creation Engine has no DirectX 11 features.
Oh wow, you can render hair with a super GPU, in a completely blank space where all the rendering power is being used solely on the hair, and it runs kind of okay!
Honestly, this is cool and it's great that they're touching on this but to get completely non-diet hair working in full 3D environments is years away.
@Bobnumerotres every technology alredy given for sure was years away in some point of history. thats why scientists and researchers exist, and not magicians and sorcerers. FOR SCIENCE!!
@Bobnumerotres "but to get completely non-diet hair working in full 3D environments is years away."
It takes years to make games. So the time for dev's to think about it for games not yet begun is now. They would also have questions about scaling for old HW....
2015 wouldn't be 2 early for this.. but perhaps not mainstream.
Say for close ups like how bioware does conversations.. farther away from the screen you don't need the same level of computation at all.
PLEASE ADD THIS IN MASS EFFECT 3 DAM YOU PEOPLE I WANT THIS ON SHEPHARD WITH RED EYES AND SCARS SO HE CAN BE A BADASS BARBARIAN FROM THE FIFTH DIMENSION... YEAH i want that
I wonder how long till the physics itself can run in real time (in the video it looks like slowmo, realistic movement but slowed down a lot, like as if it was shot with a highspeed camera)
@SpadeAce90 Almost no game uses it period. Except for Alice Madness Returns for PC with PhysX hardware acceleration. Go watch a video on Alice PhysX demos, the hair physics is used in that game.
I found that really impressive, still they don't tell you what hardware they're using so it's impossible to estimate how long it will take to reach games or if it will ever.
2) The start of the video is only movement. Not wind. Slower movement. Would work well for water too.
3) Wind is at the end of the video. Looks pretty good. A Massive improvement
4) This is the kind of technology which should be implemented in ALL games.
5) Theres not enough 3rd party technology used in game design today. Developers waste too much time redesigning the same things over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and o
@Innukii what teh fuck was that good for? i was only expressing constructive criticism. I never said it was worse, and that it shouldn't be implemented. So don't you go all "i'm smarter than you... i number my arguments". Mainly because your last argument is worth shit. You do realise this is a demo by nVidia? And will most likely be implemented in Physx... Which is used in most games that are released. The reason they don't use this kind of tech in all games is mainly due to compatibility.
@Jonasv20 I think that the first part of the demo seems kind of watery because it was showing the hair animation at a slower speed so you can see all the bits moving all independent and the like, since it was a demonstration. The wind effect at the end (Like 2:14) doesn't look like water at all.
@VisionXtream yea i know what you meant. lol just saying. tessellation, for instance, can make a 12 polygon render a 300 polygon render. the closer you get to it. it just takes a polygon and the closer you get to it, it chops it up in to smaller, and smaller polygons. that, combined with displacement mapping (which is responsible for depth and height) makes what you see here.
im not girly but damn, plastic hair annoys me in a game,if you are lucky the hair moves like any piece of clothing, but if you dont it simply stay static even when you jump.Alice Madness Returns have a pretty good hair movement...this one is good too, cant wait to play games with it
60 fps renering only one head imagine how this would work when you walk in a room with 10 people fps would drop on 5 so i think there will pass some time untill we actually see this in game....
Using dynamic tessliation to control the hairs mesh is smart seeming as you can't really make lods for hair thats a smart way to go about doing so. Can't wait to see this in action in games. No more bald space marines!
can you believe it, they are actually giving you the tools to make your own world of imagination. Then, your gonna get stuck with it and then there will be a time when sex will all be just a software like this one.
it's amazing how fast technology moves on, I remember when I was really young and games like Unreal Tournament didn't even need a GPU, and everything was very "blocky"
I for one think this looks amazing and hope that it can be effectively implemented soon :D
Is this really important? When I’m running down the street shooting the shit out of everyone I’m not going to stop and go wow that chicks hair animation moves sooo nicely.
@Skaarjguy No matter what game it is, after a while you won’t even notice or care about this effect...just another worthless affect to try and force you to upgrade your video card. And the point was that more people are Fps player than anything else, I’m a RPG man myself :-P funny how you would assume I was a fps player just cause I used it as a example.
@Vardaracon Hehe, actually I was thinking this would be be perfect for RPGs (more specifically turn-based, slow-paced RPGs) mostly because you pay more attention to the characters in those types of games, especially the player character. In a shooter you wouldn't give much thought to your character since you're almost always looking at the enemy, and the game is moving so fast you don't even notice these things.
@Skaarjguy I agree on that, just worried about frame rates, far away it was 500+fps then zoomed in it was 63fps...and it is also running a gtx480, just seems a lot of wasted power for a effect that you might get used to and not appreciate later on. Anything lower than a gtx480 will be brought to its knees, basically nivida has found a way to shorten the life of its single GPU flag ship cards like the GTX480 and GTX580.
@Vardaracon What a dumb question, thats like saying do the wheels of cars in racing games need to turn because I don't see them much. Yes it adds to the over effect and realism.
@jaggedspikerespawn Back in the day need for speed hot pursuit 3 had no wheels turning, it is very noticeable, more so then hair would be moving around in the air...so your point failed miserably. Stop insulting people’s intelligence because that type of behaviour makes you look like an idiot instantly.
This would be fantastic for games like Tekken. It might seem subliminal, but authentic hair is a huge improvement in terms of realism in games! I hope they can implement this soon.
The tech demos from Nvidia are pathetic and hilarious at the same time. The tech demos they made in 2004 are becoming a reality now in games and i'm sure in 2018 this will be in games but seriously why do they show things like this that have absolutely no real world application in any current games or ones even years out....

@nzigen31 vsync forces your fps(frames per second) to be equal to the refresh rate of your monitor or tv or whatever you are using as a display device. if its not on and your fps is over your refresh rate, then it can cause screen tearing and artifacting haha.
the problem is that we dont have the cell processing power or the computer memory to handle this technology. the same reason you cant shoot bricks out of a wall realistically in an fps. its too much for the computer to process. we'll need like 2000-core pcs before this is possible in a game.
@jackalsocoke the original xbox 360 core system debuted with a $299 price, that's where I got the number, PS3 was more expensive but I don't remember it being $900, maybe actual production cost but certain not at the consumer end. GPU pricing isn't subsidized the way consoles are.
While this technique is impressive and realtime (anything over 10fps is considered "realtime" as far as white sheet programming is concerned) it's still, by sight alone, not being done nearly fast enough to even consider it for use in a game. Like so many others before it, put it in the gaint pile of unusable demonstration gfx algorithms. Impressive, and yet, for the time being, I'll say another 5 gfx card generation iterations, will remain totally useless.
@jackalsocoke it is not totally useless because it may be helpfull for graphicsdesigners which render their movies frame by frame so realtime doesnt matter to them
I would love to see a GTA type game where everyone has hair like that, she only had one head there with no detail other than the hair and it dropped the FPS down a lot to bring it up close. How powerful would a system have to be to be able to run an open world game where characters had hair and cloth physics like that?
@clojap The change in frame rate was due to dynamic tessellation. Basically, when the camera gets closer to an object, more triangles are used to make up that object. The adverse is also true in that when you zoom out, the GPU is less taxed as it no longer has to process all those little triangles. Using this method, it WOULD be possible for everyone to have hair like this in a GTA type game. But this isn't confined to hair; EVERY model can benefit from this same process. IT'S THE FUCKIN FUTURE!
@RedPenumbra Oh I understand the closer you get the more detail and everything else has to be added so it ofcourse taxes the system more. The thing was this was just one character on screen, how strong would a system have to be to have 100 characters on screen as well as other things going on like AI, cloth physics, lighting, weather effects and all of that kind of thing.
@clojap- As I understand it in any frame of detail not everything moves all the time but every detail has to be rendered so there will be trade offs but as technology gets more powerful the trade offs are reduced. DX11 is therefore a substantial step in the right direction. It is all about detail !!
@sordsmen3456 - I doubt in reality that you would find 200 people in one place with that type of hair to be fair !! Some would be wearing hats and some would have short hair etc.!! But some game makers do have a good deal of scope for improvement with DX11
@Thet3 - You'd have to ask her very nicely after you have been going steady for about a year and you were both sure about how you felt about each other.
SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM SKYRIM

@jackalsocoke the original xbox 360 core system debuted with a $299 price, that's where I got the number, PS3 was more expensive but I don't remember it being $900, maybe actual production cost but certain not at the consumer end. GPU pricing isn't subsidized the way consoles are.
trippinlikegod 1 year ago
While this technique is impressive and realtime (anything over 10fps is considered "realtime" as far as white sheet programming is concerned) it's still, by sight alone, not being done nearly fast enough to even consider it for use in a game. Like so many others before it, put it in the gaint pile of unusable demonstration gfx algorithms. Impressive, and yet, for the time being, I'll say another 5 gfx card generation iterations, will remain totally useless.
jackalsocoke 1 year ago
@jackalsocoke it is not totally useless because it may be helpfull for graphicsdesigners which render their movies frame by frame so realtime doesnt matter to them

I would love to see a GTA type game where everyone has hair like that, she only had one head there with no detail other than the hair and it dropped the FPS down a lot to bring it up close. How powerful would a system have to be to be able to run an open world game where characters had hair and cloth physics like that?
clojap 1 year ago
@clojap The change in frame rate was due to dynamic tessellation. Basically, when the camera gets closer to an object, more triangles are used to make up that object. The adverse is also true in that when you zoom out, the GPU is less taxed as it no longer has to process all those little triangles. Using this method, it WOULD be possible for everyone to have hair like this in a GTA type game. But this isn't confined to hair; EVERY model can benefit from this same process. IT'S THE FUCKIN FUTURE!
RedPenumbra 1 year ago
@RedPenumbra Oh I understand the closer you get the more detail and everything else has to be added so it ofcourse taxes the system more. The thing was this was just one character on screen, how strong would a system have to be to have 100 characters on screen as well as other things going on like AI, cloth physics, lighting, weather effects and all of that kind of thing.
clojap 1 year ago
@clojap- As I understand it in any frame of detail not everything moves all the time but every detail has to be rendered so there will be trade offs but as technology gets more powerful the trade offs are reduced. DX11 is therefore a substantial step in the right direction. It is all about detail !!
domnal 1 year ago
now try having 200 people walking through a town square with that kind of hair, and see where your fps is at.
sordsmen3456 1 year ago
@sordsmen3456 - I doubt in reality that you would find 200 people in one place with that type of hair to be fair !! Some would be wearing hats and some would have short hair etc.!! But some game makers do have a good deal of scope for improvement with DX11
