@artistmac I have to give it to you, your wife must be very understanding. Kenmore is not made by any Sears affilate, what you have there is a Whirlpool rebranded, the same tank Lowes sells under the Whirlpool name. This is why Sears is going down, they don't have anything special to sell anymore. Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot took their market share because the company got to top heavy with deadwood employees.
Sears subcontracts out all of their installations to third party companies. Crooks!
@remastered1950ford At Sears Holdings these days, I fear "innovation" is selling Craftsman tools and Kenmore appliances at KMart. It's a scandal that they're closing all those stores so soon after getting a huge tax break from the Illinois General Assembly to keep their headquarters in Illinois.
I was just watching the news, sears is closing stores. perhaps your video is on time poor customer service, store clerks that dont give a damn or managers that dont give a shit .
I enjoyed your video, I wouldnt of had the self control you had.
I purchaced a water heater from Sears but, I didnt bother listning to the BS. Threw it in the back of my Honda element and had it installed that night. Good luck.
@metalvegetaxxx Sage advice from another schmuck without even ONE video uploaded. Here's how you do it. Take your cameraphone/camcorder and actually shoot footage of something (maybe even your ugly face). Download it to iMovie/Windows Moviemaker. I won't bother telling you how to edit it; you'd wet your pants. Now -- here's the tricky part -- upload it to YouTube! Let's hope your video skills are better than your spelling and your punctuation. Have a nice day.
I waited on the phone 20 minutes for a Sears Rep to give me a price quote of $150.00 to fix my Frigidaire Washer/Dryer, and waited 20 more minutes for them to tell me, "I'm sorry, but ALL technicians are busy! Call back later! P
Service today is not what it used to be..I used to work for Ma Bell ( AT&T )..
back in the old days we took a lot of pride in our work. The company had it's own schools and we got excellent training. Things were done according to the BSP's (Bell System Practice). Nowdays I doubt if the telephone co. employees even know what a BSP is.
Years ago if you bought a tool at Sears it had a life time warranty. Their automotive tools I think were better quality than they are now...anyway I had a friend tell me he returned a broken wrench and was given a new one.
I'm with you on this. I was a Sear person until I started reading customer reviews. Now I give both Home Depot and Lowes a chance at my major appliance business. My Sears Power Miser hot water heater stopped working recently, and while I did learn how to fix it myself, it was anything but easy and the Sears website and 800 number was useless. I figure it out by reading consumer sites on the web. Sears was a great place to buy appliances and tools, now, eh. nothing special.
Perhaps Sears has now improved? I purchased a new Kenmore water heater the other day online and it was said to be available for pickup at the store almost immediately and I received email confirmation of this fact with a barcode I printed out that would identify my purchase at the time of pickup...once I presented this barcode electronically at the rear of the store two guys came out in about a minute and put it in my car for me..very slick..Heater up and running the next day.
@brianscott2 Hmmm. Maybe someone at Sears headquarters saw this video, and the accompanying comments. It shouldn't have taken this. Obviously Sears higher-ups don't go through the process of buying Sears appliances incognito to see the treatment too many of us have been getting. Something needs to make them realize that just being "Sears" won't be enough anymore.
I was once a die-hard (ha ha get the pun?) Sears purchaser... but the past 4-5-6 years they have absolutely SUCKED! I had an issue with the FINAL Sears purchase I made... a snow thrower... friggin thing worked for TWO snowfalls... then the transmission that runs the auger imploded... long story short, they wouldn't even offer a 10% discount on parts for a machine that was JUST out of warranty... bastards... top it off, I had photographic PROOF that the failure was a DEFECT in workmanship. F-em!
@jeffpicks Sears has gone completely downhill. I'm about to file a claim regarding an air compressor that crapped out after 2 years. (It runs, but doesn't shut off after the tank is full.) We'll see if their extra-cost purchase protection is worth the paper it's written on.
@artistmac -- Hopefully they will repair... you bought the extra protection! but they'll likely come up with some fine print clause that says that the pressure switch is not covered (which is pretty obviously the problem)... Good Luck Mac!
...Now, if you take a craftsman tool back, they will give you one that only says "Sears" on it, unless you insist on another Craftsman. Then they give you one with a sticker that says Craftsman, witch comes off or fades!
Sears actually continuously contrives all sorts of scams, and was actually the only retailer in the country to have employees at every court in the country at one time (bankruptcy courts). They tried to eliminate the Craftsman Lifetime Warranty, but the courts wouldn't let them...
I bought a water heater from Sears in Merrillville. May 2011 IN. I ordered online from Sears on Monday and they delivered FREE(NO DELIVERY CHARGE) it on Wednesday...They didn't care who installed it!...I just typed in big2ship for FREE DELIVERY . My delivery time 4 to 6..They came at 5:15..and delivered it to my garage..No problem. This order was in Indiana. I had no problem with Sears at all. I also had a old Kenmore...It lasted 15 years longer than it said it would..Thanks 4 your post.
@FuzzballToday Either individual stores have some unwritten leeway in their policies, or Sears as a corporation finally got some sense. Either way, good for you.

Honestly, Sears has always been fair to its customers. I bought my washer, dryer, and refrigerators from them and they do last. My dryer is 20 years old and it is still running well. I do concur they have some inept workers but that is common in any store. Cheers.
@EggRollMonster I've never hated Sears, but that ridiculous water-heater delivery policy came straight from the top, and was designed to force Sears installation on people. My self-installation is still running great, 4 years later. How loyal am I to Sears? When both ovens on my 1972 Sears double-oven stove topped working, I replaced the flame switches rather than buy new, since nobody makes double-oven stoves now anyway. My next appliance, whatever it is, will be from Sears. Period.
excellent vid man, never understood why Sears is so bureaucratic with everything. Great Brands, craftsman, kenmore ,etc yet the salesfolk get in the way. Fast Eddie Lampert needs to fix this shit asap.
I work at Sears and I know exactly what your talkin about, but it's not the sales associate's fault lol so don't bitch us out at the store... We simply tell you what the person above us has told us or the training material tells us about the installation and delivery procedures... Sorry for your trouble and oh yeah hardware and home appliances are two entirely different departments
I'm not sure why you still decided to give Sears your business after this ordeal. I'm glad that you got it fixed and you're happy with it. Thanks so much for sharing with us.
Your issue was an easy fix. The associates were not properly trained to do their job. I work at Sears, I have for 4 years now in appliances. We sell hot water heaters, we tell people that they dont come from the warehouse, we can have out local guy bring it to you and if you so chose you may install it yourself. Your experiance isnt Sears everywhere, its that store and those associates. I would have just reported it to the store manager, Generally that person can take care of any issues that day
All there Craftsman tools are being made in China now. What the heck is the point of there Evolv line of tools for. I thought that they are the cheaper, crappier tools for the people who seldom use tools. I've always bought Craftsman tools in the past, and the main reason is because they are made with pride in the U.S.A. now that a lot of it is being made in China, I will look elsewhere to purchase my tools.
I just had a bad experience with Sears. The first time I ordered off there website I got screwed. The Items that I had purchased claimed to be, and totaed to be 50% off. I thought "great deal" so I ordered them. About a week later, Sears sent me two gift cards totaling the amount I paid for the items. I checked my E-mail, and found that the Sears website made an error on these items and they were not eligible for the 50% off like the site claimed. I was so upset, will never order from there site
Fist off the comment I posted about my 3 year old is more for the point of the and yes she is well behaved, Second of all Sears is a better company all the way around "parts direct" has over 7,000,000 parts to fix the crap you got a home depot. Third point Sears Holding company shares are 73.75, Home depot 35 dollars and about the install on a water heater ill say it again it is better for some one to install that for you. If you make a mistake that warrenty is no longer.
Sears was following the local laws, something that Chicago is big on. Home Depot could care a less about local laws. Bitch to your local government, not Sears.
You bitch like my 3 year old, good god man shen that Home Depo shit breaks down Watch that A&E "Sears" truck.....and id have to tel you this but people are slow delv/install is a good thing for most people.
Boring! Do you realize you're gay? Are you married to a woman? If so, I feel sorry for her. Except maybe you do the dishes. LOL You also are a conspiracy theorist.
My wife bought a double oven from sears paid for it over 2 months and we had to get one as we had a kitchen fire and needed to replace it went to pick it up they had sold it and no longer carried it. WE were very upset short story we did not have a stove for thanksgiving and still no stove as of today. The took 2 weeks to refund the money and all they said we will sell you the replacement for 400 bucks more I am on SSDI and very low on money . Will not shop there again!!!
Good video. You should make a How To vdo of you installing your own water heater. Since most of us are a bit afraid to do it ourselves. Obviously it can be done, so plz show us how! 2nd point......you have a face made for movies...in a kind of Cheech and Chong kind of way. And that is a good thing. Put your cap back on and get an agent, you can EASILY play a solid character actor in movies.
Sears doesn't keep most large items instock and they contract out the deliveries and installations. 90% of all deliveries end up gettting screwd up either at the register or in the system. It is a very frustrating process. If you're going to buy something large from sears have it ordered to the store. Even if you have to rent a truck to take it home yourself you're better off. Trust me.
Nice piece on the heater. Let me say that you as a customer with the money are the one in command. Sears & Sawbuck is not the only dance in town. There has always been the saying in business,"we aim to please." not "we aim and squeeze."
Your problem is that you were being the nice guy.
Let me give you and others some advice. Get a TANKLESS WATER HEATER.You will save big time.
Contact my guy @ cleanerwater@verizon.net and save 60% of your energy bill to heat water.
Anyway he's right...in a recession people are doing things on their own...they don't want to shell out the extra bucks for installation...if they keep this policy they will loose out...
ugh all retail outlets are dying rightfully so the gov created democrap bubble economy going away but instea dof manufacturing comeing back because of high interest rates nothing but doomsday approaches.
I wont buy shit from sears after the cheep POS weed eater I got from them ... HELLO surgical tubing cant be used to carry gas it cracked it leaked and after just 6 or 7 uses the lines pulled away from the gas tank and they say it needs a new calibrator well how about i just go buy a real one from home depot instead
They will install your water heater next day or same day if it is instock. Yours was obviously not so you have to wait.
Installation is contracted out and Sears makes very little profit on it, as well as it is not a metric that is primarily looked at. So for you to blame it all on that is honestly wrong.
Sears gave me the run around to. Our SEARS didn't even have an installer available and that they couldn't get me a heater delivered until over a week later. I am going to home depot.
@robbaileynow Good for you. It's the only way Sears will learn a lesson. It's almost like they're trying to get out of the appliance sales and service business.
umm at 4:19 he said boil water to wash the car.......who the hell wash's a car in hot water?....lmao But other than that man I know you're pain I wated 5 weeks of run around for a tractor I paid $ 2,500 for with a PA aka extended protection. Once I did get it the guy didn't have time to do my free demo! I was pissed! I was left with a tractor and a manual to figure it out myself.
@p71zombie Of course I'm not going to wash my cars in boiling hot water. Boiling was the only way to get it hot enough to cool down to warm with ice cold tap water (remember, this happened in Chicago in March)
You would have done better to cancel the order and buy from someone else because that water heater is a REAL POS!!! I have one.... it's broken!! Google Power miser and see what you get!!
@danpifs It's been 3 years and I haven't had one problem. Sears Kenmore appliances are still top quality, and Sears repair service is second to none; as I've said before, it's Sears sales policies that need to change, or they'll continue to lose market share.
@artistmac Artman, the Kenmore heater you bought in 1981 likely isn't made by the same company that made the water heater you installed recently, so you can't say, "Kenmore water heaters are good", when they are made by whatever company Sears decides to buy them from at that time and slap their "Kenmore" name on.
I'm sorry for your misfortune, but this is funny! My mother's hot water tank went earlier this year, with water leaking everywhere b/c the last one did not have a shut-off valve. Was on the phone w/the gas company to disable the tank, and then she & I went to HD in Cheltenham, PA for a replacement. Picked one from the floor; installed the next day. No harm, no foul. And Sears wonders why it's going out of business.
Great Video Artistmac! Sorry you got the run around. Kudos for the effort you put into your frustration. (Better than throwing a rock through their window) LOL. I just installed the new GE Hybrid which I bought directly from the Sears hot water distribution center. They delivered it to my local sears and I installed it the next night. I love it. I bet the guy in the basement gave you trouble with the order.
What sears is that? I work in sears mpu and we load tons of hot water heaters. Our biggest problems are post purchase service, associates giving out bad information to customers and shipping. I think that you should have talked to a the brand central manager in that store, operation or store manager about the behavior of that associate. You should have been able to take that hot water heater home that day. If you want to put it on the top of your car we don't care.
@ratherunique870 It was the Sears State Street store in downtown Chicago. Thanks for the info. If I'm ever in that situation again, I'm going to be a lot more agressive about not believing the first answer I hear from Sears salespeople.
I got me a General Electric 9 yr water heater from Home Dept. Installed it myself in about an hour. I had to wait 27 days to have someone come out from Sears to fix my Kenmore fridge under warranty.
I wish it was as easy as replacing one dependable product with another. Does anybody make any product with the quality we expected 30yrs ago? Congratulations on keeping those American-sized antique appliances for as long as you have!
@AprylZA No, they dont, not Kenmore, Not Whirlpool, Definatly not Electrosucks and Frigidaire. I hate to say it, but the asian machines seem to get a little more time out of them. You used to get 20 or 30 years out of a machine, no more, lucky if you get 5.
Hello Artistmac. I love your cool demeanor. I wish I could be that calm when i get pissed off. Sears is also very expensive when compared to Home Depot.
im sorry but your retarded for waiting any more than 15 minutes for a power miser water heater. sears doesnt mean shit when it comes to quality of water heaters and how long they last. has to do with how hard your local water is etc. sears dont care, you gotta take care of yourself.
It's a gamble who makes the Kenmore water heaters NOW. Next month it might be some other company who is the lowest bidder.. Point is unless you know what makes what, there's no point in getting a "Kenmore".
I recently installed a G.E. gas heater from Home Depot. Like you said, go in, pick the one you want, put it in your car
You know, I had a problem with Sears several years ago. I wrote a sizzling one-page letter to the President. Guess what? ALL of the problems I was struggling with talking to underlings, were fixed after the 5 minute call from his office! This is not restricted to Sears. I have had fabulous luck complaining to the very top of corporations. I don't piddle around with subordinates who couldn't care where they work. I talk to someone who has a stake in the company and cares.
and thats why everywere you go,,people that might be around you, are looking at you saying " OH,NO,,, not them again !!" be careful who you piss off.. lets see you piss off the pizza delivery driver by calling his boss,, or his bosses boss.
i would be checking for spit balls on that pizza when it comes to the door....SAD !!
@kandamane Do you remember who you wrote to?? I am trying to fight for a family member whose hours got cut down to 4 hours a week because she couldn't get enough customers to sign up for the rewards program. 3 other employees had their hours reducded to 4 as well and then immediately the store hired two new cashiers.
Orgoth02, why don't you get a life, moron? I don't know this guy, but I am sure he is smarter than you. You are rude and think too highly of yourself, you piece of slime! You are sick to make false accusations like that! Thanks, artistmac for the informative video.
LOL, but Yaaay for you! I found your vid while searching for a new water heater. Our 30-year old Rheem gas water heater finally decided to quit--maybe they DON'T make them like they used to!!!
Customer service certainly isn't what it used to be, that is for sure!
Wow! 30 years! They definitely don't make them like they used to.
If you haven't bought one yet, I can definitely recommend a Sears heater. The 40-gallon one I installed is coming up on 3 years without a problem. As for Sears salespeople and delivery policies -- well, that's a different story;-)
I think you were EXTREMELY lucky to get 26 years out of ANY water heater, regardless of brand. Seriously...I don't know anyone who ever got that kind of life out of a water heater. Maybe they don't make 'em like they used to? I dunno... but it seems like today's water heaters are made to last about 2 days past their warranty expiration. My water heater died 2 days past its 6-year warranty. The tank rusted through and started leaking on the floor.
I can't explain it, either. Maybe because our water heater is in a first-floor utility room instead of in a basement, which is always prone to flooding and high humidity.
your a very tolerant person. I'd have gone to Home Depot if I had to wait just one day for my water heater. Not sure why you thought brand loyalty was worth waiting over a month for your water heater.
Like I said, if I can get 26 years out of this water heater like I did out of the last Sears water heater, I'll be happy.
I know brand loyalty is as dead as chivalry, but in this case it's paying off. Over 2 and a half years and it runs like a top, despite being installed by an "amateur". You want to talk about misplaced brand loyalty? One word: Toyota;-)
I had a hot water heater element die on me a year ago. I had to drive an HOUR to go to the nearest parts store to buy a replacement, after spending the better part of my day trying to get "standard" sized elements to fit.
I despise any company that tries to force customer loyalty by "locking them in" to their product lines. Loyalty should be voluntary, not compulsory!
You will notice that Artistmacman is wearing a knit hat, and quite a spiffy one at that, because his Kenmore house furnace of 3 years crapped out on him.
The house furnace is a Bryant, still pumping out the heat after 53 years. (I do keep the thermostat turned down to save energy).
Update on the Kenmore water heater: still working fine, despite being installed by a non-professional (yours truly). Unlike the last time we had one installed by a licensed pro, I did not test the tightness of the gas pipe connections with a lit cigarette;)
53 year old furnace? why don't you get a high efficient furnace so you don't have to keep your t-stat at 60 degrees and wear a knit hat in doors..joe pinch penny.
due I work for sears it sounds like you dealt with some asshole employees who were either stupid. Right now I work for a kmart store in my home town and believe me after working an eight hour shift your tired of people asking questions and stupid ones. at kmart were supposed to ask you for email addresses and if youd like to apply for a sears credit card and i never do sears is stupid and at work out manager told us to make the customer happy and give them what they want fuck sears
I work in Sears Hardware in Arkansas and it sounds like you got the run around by that particular store. If i sold you your hot water heater, you could have taken it the same day, and had it installed and working in no time. I recommend going back to the store in question and kicking some ass!
EXCELLENT video of a SEARS complaint. Step up the pace a bit, add a joke or two, and you have a topic for Open Mike night at The Improv!
Sad about SEARS going downhill like that. The used to be "Satisfaction Guaranteed". One time they REPLACED a socket wrench I broke changing rusted lug nuts on a flat tire.
Anyone who's ever waited for delivery of a Wii, Prius, or Apple Computer or waited an hour for a table at a "hot" restaurant might give you an argument there. Some things, like Sears appliances, are worth the wait. My objection is to the idiotic way they're sold, which has nothing to do with their quality (26 years out of my last Sears water heater - exceptional).
Power to the people my friend, lets have justice in the world, what a brilliant example of what the people have to put up with ,nice one artistmac, best wishes Brian
How would Home Depot be any different? There was nothing to stop you from bringing the station wagon to Sears and having Merchandise Pick Up load the hot water heater right into your vehicle for you that very day or any other day of your choosing after the purchase. Installation is completely optional, it's there for people that need it. As for the delivery you were warned that it would be a while and you could have simply decided to come back the next day and pick it up yourself.
No one trusts a douch bag with a girls ear-ring. Lose it, look like a man and things will start looking up for you. Stop being a such a big puss. And besides, it is not a hot water heater, it is a cold water heater. If the water was hot, it wouldn't need to be heated.
Hi, Zag. You joined YouTube December 20, 2008. In that time, you haven't made and submitted one video, you have no subscribers, and you've watched almost 3,400 videos. And your last 5 comments on other people's videos (mostly about hot water heaters) have been routinely negative. Perhaps YOU'RE the douchebag and the puss, zagthenotsogreat;-) Put up some videos of your own; let's see what makes you so great.
Plumber Bw is an Idiot. Try to find licensed plumbers in the state of FL who are willing to touch gas lines with no LP or natural license. Have fun when the inspector catches you.
You should be a part-time plumber. If you lived near me, I would call you to install one for me. Mine just went out. Thanks for the video. Can't tell you how many times I've had to rearrange my life for a delivery, only to have to rearrange it again to accommodate Sears & others like them.
Great video. Found that Sears do not honor their price on the web ver what in the store. Talk about bait and switch. Unless you know what you are getting or know your stuff. Do It yourself. Just know your limitations. Should have gone to a tankless water heater. One final note, put a blanket and a timer or switch on that water to turn off when not in use. You could save almost 50 percent on elec.
it certainly can happen all it takes is for sediment to clog a relief valve and that's it kaboom or a gas leak that explods your house its unlikly that the relief valve will clog but it can happen.let me take a wild guess do you live in the cape by any chance.
No. The relief valve is located high up in the tank, and has a 1/2 or 3/4" outlet. Highly unlikely to clog. Bizarre things could happen, but I wouldn't bet on it.
what about permits?did you know that if you dont pull a permit and your water heater blows up your house. guess what your insurance will not cover it.
Sears sucks. but even if you buy an appliance threw Home Depot or Lowes, repair service and parts are still contract with Sears through them. its so hard to repair something without using Sears
Art Dude.luved the impression...............one of the dishwashers they sold me leaked water on three occasions from three locations on the dishwasher and caused $4,000 damage to our floor. Zero compensation for the floor. It took four months and three techs to fix the dishwasher. Bad Sears! AW but the lawyers aren't finished with them yet!
Sears does suck when it comes to that kind of stuff. Also, some cities don't allow homeowners to install their own water heaters which could be why Sears gave you a hard time.
I bought my water heater a few years back from Home Depot and installed it myself with no problem.
Sorry about your experience with Sears, but dude, you really should have canceled the order. It's people who put up with this shit that allows them to continue with it.
Dude, you should have just rented a U-Haul or gotten your buddy's truck instead of waiting til May to have it delivered. The timeframe is nuts and boiling hot water for that long would drive anyone crazy. Just my $0.02 - Glad that you were able to install it without a hitch...! And yes, you don't need a licensed plumber for everything...! There use to be a day when EVERYONE had to fix shit themselves...! Good for you Artist Mac.
My Mom use to be a Sears groupie in the 1960's and 1970s. Everything was from Sears. Until they tryed to screw her over when she wanted to return a Kenmore sewing machine in the mid-70s. After that, she NEVER shopped there again. It was specialty shops and boutiques after that.
Wow..1956? You're older than my parents and you look about my age.

Something needs to make them realize that just being "Sears" won't be enough anymore.
artistmac 5 months ago
I was once a die-hard (ha ha get the pun?) Sears purchaser... but the past 4-5-6 years they have absolutely SUCKED! I had an issue with the FINAL Sears purchase I made... a snow thrower... friggin thing worked for TWO snowfalls... then the transmission that runs the auger imploded... long story short, they wouldn't even offer a 10% discount on parts for a machine that was JUST out of warranty... bastards... top it off, I had photographic PROOF that the failure was a DEFECT in workmanship. F-em!
jeffpicks 6 months ago
@jeffpicks Sears has gone completely downhill. I'm about to file a claim regarding an air compressor that crapped out after 2 years. (It runs, but doesn't shut off after the tank is full.) We'll see if their extra-cost purchase protection is worth the paper it's written on.
artistmac 6 months ago
@artistmac -- Hopefully they will repair... you bought the extra protection! but they'll likely come up with some fine print clause that says that the pressure switch is not covered (which is pretty obviously the problem)... Good Luck Mac!

LMAO. Dude, I guess you hate Sears now.
Honestly, Sears has always been fair to its customers. I bought my washer, dryer, and refrigerators from them and they do last. My dryer is 20 years old and it is still running well. I do concur they have some inept workers but that is common in any store. Cheers.
EggRollMonster 10 months ago
@EggRollMonster I've never hated Sears, but that ridiculous water-heater delivery policy came straight from the top, and was designed to force Sears installation on people. My self-installation is still running great, 4 years later. How loyal am I to Sears? When both ovens on my 1972 Sears double-oven stove topped working, I replaced the flame switches rather than buy new, since nobody makes double-oven stoves now anyway. My next appliance, whatever it is, will be from Sears. Period.

Trust me.

They will install your water heater next day or same day if it is instock. Yours was obviously not so you have to wait.
Installation is contracted out and Sears makes very little profit on it, as well as it is not a metric that is primarily looked at. So for you to blame it all on that is honestly wrong.

@danpifs It's been 3 years and I haven't had one problem. Sears Kenmore appliances are still top quality, and Sears repair service is second to none; as I've said before, it's Sears sales policies that need to change, or they'll continue to lose market share.
artistmac 1 year ago
@artistmac Artman, the Kenmore heater you bought in 1981 likely isn't made by the same company that made the water heater you installed recently, so you can't say, "Kenmore water heaters are good", when they are made by whatever company Sears decides to buy them from at that time and slap their "Kenmore" name on.

Tupperchicka 2 years ago
Wow! 30 years! They definitely don't make them like they used to.
If you haven't bought one yet, I can definitely recommend a Sears heater. The 40-gallon one I installed is coming up on 3 years without a problem. As for Sears salespeople and delivery policies -- well, that's a different story;-)
artistmac 2 years ago
I think you were EXTREMELY lucky to get 26 years out of ANY water heater, regardless of brand. Seriously...I don't know anyone who ever got that kind of life out of a water heater. Maybe they don't make 'em like they used to? I dunno... but it seems like today's water heaters are made to last about 2 days past their warranty expiration. My water heater died 2 days past its 6-year warranty. The tank rusted through and started leaking on the floor.
EvenSteven2004 2 years ago
I can't explain it, either. Maybe because our water heater is in a first-floor utility room instead of in a basement, which is always prone to flooding and high humidity.
artistmac 2 years ago
your a very tolerant person. I'd have gone to Home Depot if I had to wait just one day for my water heater. Not sure why you thought brand loyalty was worth waiting over a month for your water heater.
jaslll4396 2 years ago
Like I said, if I can get 26 years out of this water heater like I did out of the last Sears water heater, I'll be happy.
I know brand loyalty is as dead as chivalry, but in this case it's paying off. Over 2 and a half years and it runs like a top, despite being installed by an "amateur". You want to talk about misplaced brand loyalty? One word: Toyota;-)

How about saving HUNDREDS of dollars.
The Home depot near me has a sign posted of all the items required by code:
Flue upgrade: $300
Expansion tank: $150
Gas valve:$95
etc... Yea right, The original and replacement heater used a 3" flue without any problem, and didn't have an expansion tank without any problems.
These charges cost about as much as the damn heater itself.

Blow up??? It might leak, but it's not gonna blow up. It has a temp and pressure relief valve that CAN NOT FAIL.

Sears sucks. but even if you buy an appliance threw Home Depot or Lowes, repair service and parts are still contract with Sears through them. its so hard to repair something without using Sears

What do you suggest? Change it when it's still working fine? Some people might do this.

SEARS SUCKS .... They contract all the installation work out...
They installed a new drier for my friend and never cleaned out the vent line....! Get your hot water heaters at a plumbing suply shop screw sears!

Artman, why do you think the installation info doesn't print out?
Hmmmmmm.

Sears does suck when it comes to that kind of stuff. Also, some cities don't allow homeowners to install their own water heaters which could be why Sears gave you a hard time.
I bought my water heater a few years back from Home Depot and installed it myself with no problem.

Artistmac, 25 years is an incredibly long time for a water heater. Mine just let go after 19 yrs.
Did you do any maintenance like flushing or changing the anode rod.
I didn't, but i will on the new one.
