  • LETS HAVE A HUGE FIGHT NOW!!!

  • I'm an atheist and my heroes are Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, and yet I'm entirely open to the possibility of our consciousness somehow 'surviving' death. You'd be a fool to dismiss the idea; and it's an idea gaining ground in the scientific community, as we delve deeper into the problem of consciousness. We know so little. Nonetheless, religion need not rear its ugly head.

  • @l337z0r I agree with you, but this what always make wonder how people define atheism. Because of me keeping myself open for the idea of an other form of consciousness I don't consider myself an atheist, for example.

  • @l337z0r No there is no ground in the scientific world about consciousness surviving death it directly, flies in the face of thermodynamics for one.

How is it foolish to dismiss the fact that consciousness survives death, If I get brain damaged my consciousness becomes entirely different and impaired, so what makes you think fully destroying my brain would make my consciousness repair fully remembering names dates colours and memories? If anything it's losing ground the more neuroscience learns

  • @ronocko Well I agree with that. If we die, the thing we call our 'self' won't survive. But it's possible there might be some sort of layer of reality, like space-time, that operates as some sort of field of consciousness? We just don't know yet. It's a problem. Perhaps neuroscience will find all the answers; perhaps it won't. We may need a paradigm shift in science to accommodate theories that, right now, seem totally absurd. The problem of consciousness is an open one: for now.

  • @l337z0r The problem with saying it's open is that you're assuming anything could be true for it and allowing any mystic/woo answer to be just as valid as things based on study and evidence. Evolutionarily speaking there is no reason to suppose that consciousness has an extra dimension for it if you look at other primates they for the most part all seem to have variance of conscious experience. There's no reason to believe consciousness is anything more than a trick of the brain.

  • Things are bad!!! Unless they're not!! In that case, things are good!!!

  • when making a film about his assumption on the reality of God gervais clearly didn't do his research, those who don't believe in God will never see their need to repent and trust in Jesus and therefore will never go to heaven as they will have their sins on them and will be punished in hell, it's very dangerous and foolish to blindly assume we'll all enter heaven when God says otherwise, when considering God go to the bible, not your imagination

  • @jaffacec so a member of an obscure tribe, who has been brought up to believe in different beliefs and religious views, who has never even heard of the bible or god as you know him to be, will go to hell for it? Seems unfair to me.

  • @SweetMintPie555 it's a valid point you bring up and yes it is something difficult, I myself don't fully understand it, however what you do is you don't just look at the difficulties and say that God's unjust without listening to him, you have to ask God to reveal himself to you and look through the bible to see what he says you then start trusting him in difficult things such as that, I know however from the bible that these ppl will not be half as punished as those who REFUSED to listen to God

  • @jaffacec fair enough :)

  • @jaffacec Punsihed...pfft, thats impossible, our punishment is dying and never seeing light again.

  • @jaffacec

I know from the Bible how to treat my slaves, and that the earth is flat.

Now pardon me a moment, I'm poor and I'm off to sell my daughter . . .

  • It's not heaven if there aren't dinosaurs.

  • How about everyone choose your religion or lack of religion, and stop criticising others. State your religion and commend others that they have found something to believe in. We're Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Budist, Hindu, Atheist, Mormon, Sikh...

I'm Christian, and I know that the Bible says to spread the word of the Lord. But you don't have to pound it into people's faces.

  • Religion causes War, when did Atheism ever do that?

  • @ColdShaunUK The fascist organization, the mexican red shirts, were so vehemently anti clerical and militantly atheist that they opened fire on people as they left mass, in the name of atheism.

    Google it.

  • @Iisdabest889 Even though I'm unaware of that historical event, I'm still pretty sure it was a rare case. Certainly much less common than atrocities in the name of religion. Oh and you should provide a source, not just "Google it",

  • interviewer just doesnt understand rickys humour. Its like white noise when he tells that last joke lol

  • That interviewer wasn't very good.

  • we gotta join buppa

  • I personally think religion undermines our achievements. It's kinda mocking, like saying "come on, you thought you guys were smart enough to create all these fantastic things on your own? If its good, then you can't of made it!'

  • Oh god, any video that has anything to do, with anything to do with religion and a war starts.

  • I want to exchange tit too. hahahhahaa.

  • Trouble is, this theory of heaven falls down flat when you people are burnt to a crisp.

Ooh, now I've suddenly got a flashback to the movie Beetlejuice. Probably a better movie too.

  • FYI ... Ricky Gervais is an avowed Atheist.

  • Another great British export. Brilliant comic.

  • Okay. You fucktards do KNOW that this conversation is not about religion? It is about:

    1) The movie 'Ghosttown'

    2) And some humorous speculations by Ricky Gervais about the different possibilities of what happens to you before you die...

STOP ARGUING ABOUT RELIGION ON A MOVIE-INTERVIEW VIDEO!!! I don't want to see your stupid arguments...

    (P.S): Ricky is hilarious.

  • CUT! xD

  • hahaha

  • Religion is bullshit, grow the fuck up or GTFO

  • the host is a faggot

  • I belive in God, but I dont give a fuck about religion...jews, cathl. muslims..same shit..

  • @NaszaOjczyzna - I believe in religion, but I don't give a fuck about God. I can see religion, its all around me, but God - Fuck knows where he/she/it is...

  • People still believe in religion ?

    It's 2010........

Do you truly believe an omnipotent being created everything but never reveals itself to us ?

Could somebody explain to me why an omnipotent being would operate that way ?

  • @5150jafo God never reveals himself? That's just not true. He's been revealing himself to schizophrenics for ages. And Snake Oil Salesmen...

  • @5150jafo people are still ignorant and aren't tolerant enough with people of many different religious faiths?

it's 2011. it's time to just be open, respect and be tolerant of other's beliefs. i'm not religious myself but i've learnt it's better to be peaceful and respect others. you have your view, let other's have theirs.

  • @5150jafo For the laughs?

  • @5150jafo

The concept of god is a very interesting one. God does not have to be an omnipotent being God could very well be defined as the sum of the physical laws that govern the universe. That's what Carl Sagan believed and that is the reason why he considered himself to be an agnostic.

  • @5150jafo

You are going to hell you beastly thing!

  • @weirdcitykid...

There's no such thing as hell though.

  • hello. i'm an atheist.

  • gosh dont you just hate it when the WHOLE comments section is taken over by 2 twats who have nothing interesting to say and take an age to conclude their little debate which has no real substance to what everyone else is light heartedly chatting about? ref. psydome + shanustheanus =)

  • God the Americans are such cunts, I don't know how Gervais can stand it, even for the money, fuckin hell!

  • If Christianity is in fact true, and I'm going to hell, I don't give a shit!

What's eternal pain going to do, Kill me? Of course not, so after 1 day in hell your body would be so battered that your nerve endings would be shot, you wouldn't feel it anymore. I'm sure your brain would learn to subconsciously deal with pain on a level impossible to test with mortality. You'd deal with it conciously, because pain is just a warning for possible death so that's fucked.

    So I win either way!

  • @mas5453 I love you.

  • that video gave me epilepsy

  • If that happens to be true (which it isn't) I hope I'd die wearing my Mocca leather jacket, one of my collar shirts, some T-shirt under it, my favourite Jeans and my mocca style Vans or my Puma sneakers.

Or what if I die in the shower if I slip? What then? I'd be naked?

  • some people think since the bible isnt true life is less important which is completely retarded

  • RIcky was quite annoyed at this.

  • @utdfordouble Why?

  • lmao love this. EminemBase is right, anyone who says otherwise is simply afraid of death and going to hell and looks towards religion.

wake up people and just try thinking :P

  • ... Just enjoy the video.

Be an atheist or a religious person if you want, just don't do crazy things because of it.

  • @Mrster Noone ever did something crazy in the name of not believing in a God haha.

  • @PrivateJoker17

    Never said atheism triggered anything.

  • @Mrster You said don't do anything crazy in the name of atheism or religion.

  • @PrivateJoker17

Let's not rule out that it could happen I guess, even though there might be no such major events that have happened.

Anyway, let's not turn this into what I was against in the first place.

  • @Mrster Haha, I won't turn this into one of the typical debates on these videos haha, but saying that evil acts will be done in the name of atheism is like saying evil acts can occur from a non belief in Santa Clause. Quite implausible.

  • @PrivateJoker17

As I've said, crazy people do crazy stuff. Not every religious person will be turned into a nut job for being religious, not even the deeply faithful. There are those who go further and bend and come up with their own reasons though.

    Implausible, probably. Impossible, probably not.

  • @Mrster Yeah, of course there are crazy atheists, but it's unlikely that they'll do anything crazy in the name of their atheism. I just can't see that happening.

  • @PrivateJoker17

My statement was pretty safe and obvious really. No matter what you are, don't do anything nuts, and you'll be fine and accepted (in my eyes). That's about it.

And further than that, don't have a stupid debate on it on YouTube. ;)

  • @Mrster Hahaha, yes you're right xD

    good talking to you :D

  • @PrivateJoker17

    You too!

  • religion schmidgion-its all abstract and subjective

  • Until people put it into policy, e.g. persuading people not to use condoms in Africa or they'll burn in hell... meanwhile in reality over 4,000 people in Africa will die from AIDS today.

Religion is at best at fantasy, at worse an excuse for murder.

  • At worst an excuse for genocide, I know it is basically the same thing but genocide would be more accurate.

  • true

  • Really guys? How about we all just have a good laugh at the video. I happen to be an athiest at least towards the judeo0christian faith. But no matter what your faith, race, or ethnicity, Ricky Gervais is a funny freakin dude. :-D

  • Stalin killed in the name of atheism? Erm. Under Stalin Russia had witch hunts, heresey trials, miracles and inquisitions. Hmm. Very atheist. I remember Thomas Paines book "worship the state and burn the witches"...

  • He killed in the name of Communism, not atheism. Atheism my well be a part of Communism, but he didn't kill people FOR Atheism. Only the religious kill for their beliefs on such a large scale.

  • religion has been created by man, not discovered like science

  • there is no specific mention of gay people in the bible

  • @batista981 why shit on the bible?

  • @batista981 i wish you would say things like that in a more intelligent way with less bigotry.

  • @batista981 I rather have a wank than read bible.

  • If there's a God why does he make Atheists?

A lot of the people who believe in God do so out of fear. They live their lives believing because they're scared of going to Hell.

So if you don't believe in God, you go to Hell. Nice bloke isn't he?

  • haha who gives a shit? the bible isnt right anyways, it was written by men not by a god or a hybrid lifeform , just normal men writing a set of bullshit rules in order to obtain control over a nation, with a consequence of damnation. LOL AT UR RELIGOUS BULSHIIIIIIIIIT

  • @domclarke92 the belief Christians share is that god inspired and told the men what to write and how to write it...which sounds like the plot of "The Exorcist" to me. only less...violent. But I believe the world was in such a state, murdering and thieving without repent, that some blokes made up some rules and a god to keep it under control and give us a basic moral code. Which worked didn't it? that bad feeling you get if you kill someone? So you can't blame it for war. Only the mislead people

  • @shanustheanus oh yeah i believe religion is form of efficient control, and was probably necessary when first thought up, but in modern times i dont think people need to be lied to, to ensure they dont kill people. And yes, i also agree that the human race with or without religion would wage wars, its just that religion gives people an easy reason. Religion is ridiculous.

  • @domclarke92 Religion is only believed to be pointless by modern man. Only because it has guided us enough to the point where we can say we have no use for it anymore. I believe it has set the moral stone for us to continue on. We no longer need god(s). And now we can examine every page of the bible and think, "Is this a stoners book?"..."Woah dude he got eaten by a giant fish...talking snake man...Het It says here jesus got stoned too, oh they mean with rocks". It is ridiculous...now.

  • @shanustheanus completely agree.

  • @shanustheanus Actually that is not true. The world was not in anarchy and then we invented religion and solved it. That shows a complete ignorance to history. The Greeks were living in democratic peace and speculating on the nature of the universe a century before religion. The oldest set of laws found to date are from about 1750 BC. and included things like not murdering etc. Also we can see from other animals that they manage to live in a peace that humans to this day don't equal.

  • @ThePsydome Okay so it was a 'best of album' of rules. Does it really matter? Besides my comment doesn't show 'A complete ignorance to history' as I know more about other subjects of history, to base my whole knowledge of history on one example shows a complete ignorance to trying to sound intellectual. If your after an intellectual debate you have come to the wrong man. However I will say this, we can't compare human law to animal law, as they murder, in most cases without punishment.

  • @shanustheanus Hit a nerve did I? What was all the "I know loads more about history...blah blah".? I was correcting the biblical account of world history which is absolute bollocks. The bible was not original by any means on its moral teaching and I mentioned animals because there are many species that display reciprocal altruism and punishment. We are not unique in this.

  • @ThePsydome Why are you trying so hard to sound clever? It's just not paying off. You didn't hit a nerve, I just simply spoke back to you as I was spoken to (Jesus would be proud). I said in MOST cases, which anyone who isn't too busy trying to sound like a know-it-all twat would have spotted straight away would have realised I know in some cases animals are punished, showing were not unique. and at no point did I ever say "I know loads more about history". Besides, It had nothing to do with you

  • @shanustheanus ?? I am not trying to sound clever. I was just responding to your comment. You don't know me mate. And ironically, if I come across as trying to be clever then it probably was paying off, even though I wasn't intending that. And quite frankly, if you think that I was trying to sound clever, that is a reflection on you mate. I did not mention anything that was remotely clever.

  • @ThePsydome listen this conversation could go on and on and on. You putting in dates and historical points and animal 'facts' into a simple youtube comment isn't trying to sound clever? Then oh no i have egg on my face. This 'debate' has nothing to do with the video anymore so there's no point carrying it on is there? it just clogs youtube up with even more pointless shit like cats having it away. I'm sure you're a nice bloke in real life. but here your just another argumentative twat.

  • @shanustheanus OK, sure. I wasn't trying to do anything other than correct something you wrote and give you reasons why what you said was false. The reason being that, as you say, YouTube is full of idiots and people who do try and postulate bollocks to people who don't know better. I don't think you are one of these people, but I did not know that before I posted my first comment. lets end the convo here and part ways. Peace.

  • Religion = War

  • So get rid of religion and there'd be no war?

Seriously get real, there are loads of relgions that have never been involved in war.

Though people will do well to remember the Jehovah's Witness/Buddhist conflict of 1956, ooh that was vicious

  • No but get rid of religion and you irradicate a lot of death.

Just because religion isn't the cause of ALL death or ALL war doesn't make it more valid of a place in society.

Point is, it's only EVER been responsible FOR misery and death and nothing else. It's an irrational belief system, if it didn't cause any harm - Fine, believe in what you like.

But point is, it has, does and will always cause harm because it's a pathway to extremeism. Fucking nonsense.

  • I gave you a thumbs up because up until about 2 months I had exactly to the T same points as view as yourself.

However someone wise said to me that religon itself and its point is to create peace and harmony and a set of rules of which we can all abide and live by.

I think its the fact that there is more than 1 or 2 big religons that there is so much trouble in the world... if I had just a single wish it would be to end all religon and make philosophy part of the GCSE cirriculam ha

  • It's not been only EVER been responsible FOR misery and death, it's offered comfort to millions of people, irrational or otherwise nobody has the right to take that from anybody.

Any belief system religious or otherwise can cause extremism, you only have to look at the biggest genocides in the last century to see that

  • "comfort" doesn't count in it's favour. How ridiculous of a fucking reason to argue for the existence of religion.

It may be somewhat of a pyschological crutch to a few who know no different but to most they've been indoctrinated and brainwashed by the crap and can't outthink it.

It's brain poision. Yes you're right any belief system can lead to that. That's why we need to crush out irrational shit. Science, rationality and technology are the only things that have helped us. Not fucking myths.

  • Also, first of all this notion that it gives comfort to some, well, that's questionable.

There are far better ways to get comfort than self-delusion.

And even if that was the case, we can achieve that without religion. Where as try thinking of some other things that could of caused man to do such hurrendous acts that religion have inspired.

  • Fact is the only thing religion has POSITIVELY created is death. Everything else it may or may not have spured on is subjective. If you can't cope in life without the belief in a higher-being, I think you're a sad individual.

  • Do you honestly think that if we eradicate religion that a large chunk of the world's ills will disappear?

"Religious" wars are not always that (Bosnia Beirut Northern Ireland to name a few) political leaders exploit religion to pursue their ends, if religion wasn't there they would just use some other reason.

You said it would eradicate a lot of death, my argument is that it wouldn't, there'd just be something else to take it's place

  • I think you're wrong. Money and religion are the cause for 95% of humanity's suffering.

We don't need either but continue to have both. Money is a bartering tool and it will exist for a longtime yet.

And many feel we need it.

But we certainly do not need religion. Illogical, childish crap.

  • Lmao what's that? What an empty, childish comment.

We can sit here all day and exhange tit for tat comments.

That's a comment made by another human, not me.

So he happens to be an atheist and you've probably misinterpreted it anyway but even so... So what? That's a comment...

I've never seen an act of violence done IN THE NAME of atheism. But I've seen plenty done in the name of god.

  • Firstly no I'm not convinced. I don't see how "you've probably" contends with the notion of being CONVINCED.

And they didn't kill in the NAME OF science or rationality. Just like Starling may have been an atheist but he didn't kill in the NAME of atheism. You can't because atheism is just a lack of belief. There is no set pathway from logic and reason to do bad things.

Where as there is a completely logical path from irrational nonsense to do bad things.

I'm done with this now. Bye bye.

  • totally agree, well put dude

  • @EminemBase best comment on youtube.....brillant

  • @EminemBase To clarify, I'm an atheist. I've used that arguments plenty of times in my time (never an act of violence in the name of atheism) but that's a rather silly argument if you think about it, because why would there be? Religious fervor is the cause of violence in the name of a god(s) and atheism lacks any! That is like saying anarchism is better than a dictatorship because anarchists have never imposed sedition laws. True, dictatorships are bad, but the argument's basis is flawed.

  • @Bleedo23 What are you talking about. You've simply made my own point for me.

I know you wouldn't see violence done 'in the name of' atheism as it's a LACK of belief... THAT is my fucking point. It's an argument / point FOR atheism, to highlight the purity in logic.

You think you're pointing out a flaw in my argument when you're actually reinforcing what I'm saying lmao.

  • Both Athetists and the Religious will make excuses to war with other people. Your statement barely skims the surface of the truth.

  • its weird according to MOST religions gays are going hell no matter how strong there faith is

  • techniqcally, nobbing a 13 year old is natural too.

  • comment sections of videos are increasing becoming battlefields of random opinions

  • holy fucking shit how does what you guys are arguing about have anything to do with the video? jesus..

  • Silly question, but I'd like to see the whole thing.

  • not really a question..

  • "Cut !"

    Hilarious XD

  • ooh Come on. I know you like a BIG wang up the grotto after a hard days work. -Just tingeling away until you burst out a high pitched squeel: "Love me daddy!!!"

  • No such thing as a normal human, if you don't know that, you don't get enough human interaction in your life. Fact.

  • Actually every species of sexually reproductive animal engages in homosexual activities, it is natural, it is normal, it's not indoctrination to teach kids that it's ok to be gay because it is.

  • Comment removed

  • birth control isn't "normal" either... should we stop it?

  • As are satellites, medicine, shampoo, computers, not dying in your 20s...

    Go unnatural gay sex!

  • What is it about the internet that brings out the morons? In the braindead comments here there seems to be some level of reasoned argument intended, which is only highlights the total stupidity further. I wouldn't recommend they give more evidence, Stootoot- I don't imagine contempt is a concept they really grasp.

Good video, though. Any reference to Karl Pilkington is welcome, although he is an intellectual titan compared to gems like "u are a sory arse".

  • classic, nice one!

  • clever

  • lol!!!

  • if ricky died it would be a black t shirt

  • waste of time that was interviewer was a fucking wombat

  • Look to the right of your post, see that big red thumb? Do you know what that means? It means the youtube community hates you, and other homophobes like you. I say again, your opinion is not valued, but please do post again for further evidence of peoples contempt for people like you.

  • What if you're Elvis?

  • weird ass interviewer.

  • You've already said that once and it still isn't true. Nobody cares about you opinion so I don't know why you even bother posting.

  • Yes, please - it's turning me on<3

  • CT2507 , Gervais is no fond of gays . You stupid cunt . You take it from his humour that it is so . you stupid cunt . you don't like gays because your brain is a minute peice of shit up an arse that the gays pummel . fuck off

  • Why u hate gays so much?

were you "touched" as they say in amerika?

  • Can you show us on the doll where they touched you?

  • lol......whatt..??

  • you must see a professional , this denial you are suffering from , it's obvious from your language that the only thing that will bring you joy is to suck male arse and play toncil hockey with big stiff cocks . I implore you to get help , live your life to the fullest , don't deny your true being , just bend over and have your fudge packed good and proper . By the way , a faggot is meatball delicacy from olden days , i'm not one of them i don't think . could i see a photo of your butt ? xxxxxxx

  • sure u can see my butt. do u want a photo with a shaven butt, a bushy or just a plain messy one where i shat myself all over? i'll throw one in of my big balls too for good measure.

and no, i wont hold it against u. u are not necessarily a good little gay for wanting to see what is only natural.

im sure the best of men at all times and all ages have been curious of one anthers private parts. i believe we should share.

    cheers.

  • Cool . by the way i am a seven year old child , i'm going to have to tell my mum on you , you filthy peadophile , and get the feds in to bust your slimey butt . Oh , butts again . oooohhh

  • not really you dick

  • nah

  • OMG U SRS

  • The interviewers face scares me.

  • The interviewer is a narcissitic, solipsistic TOOL. That's right, Dave... you're transparent and BORING. Congrats on your media mediocrity.

  • wtf? seriously, it seemed as though gervais was the only one talking, the guy wasn't even commenting. He was just sitting there smiling. wtf. He's just making it awkward...idk.

  • Bald Headed TWAT! Look at fucking Coconut Face coming this way. He's got a head like a fucking orange.

  • Nice Gervais reference. Word perfect, too. Thumbs up!

  • "But, wha...why...I don't get it..it's all mixed up. Why do they do it? Why do they go nooood?" Karl Pickleton.

  • has a head like a fucking orange.

  • ah, so thats the reason why Karl is against prostate examinations! It all makes sense now. And here I was thinking he was a baldy manc twat with no brains.

  • "Cut." LOL

  • lol brilliant, Gervais'd (as they say) - That sounds mental on the audio preview

  • karly pilkoids is a legend!
