  • am i the only one who wants a upright bass to play punk rock & heavy metal on it rather than jazz, classical, & all that other stuff? and also great playing, btw.

  • I didn't think gut strings were even available anymore. Sounds great!

  • I have to agree . . . the gut strings have a more pleasant sound than the wire wrapped strings. When I bought my Kay (used, in 1961) it had gut strings. Now it has wrapped strings but the bass isn't as resonant. It's more resonant with three strings than with four. I don't know if it's the strings or sound post placement. Time to take it to a luthier, I guess.

  • hmm I had an old Kay acoustic guitar,,it was a peice of crap

  • sounds amazing

  • how much that bass cost? & also the strings

  • Katzen musik das wo du spielst

  • That sounds HOT!

  • The tone is cool indeed. I must agree, however, your intonation and vibrato need some work...

  • sounds just like Mingus' bass!

  • This is better than porn

    .

  • could you please play the intro of "FAT MAMA" - off of Herbie Hancock's 1969 Fat Albert Rotunda album??? would be great!!!

  • check out stretchstring channel to see and hear my homemade weed whacker strings on my upright bass. sounds alot like these gut strings on this old kay.

  • phat & gorgeous tone

  • Its got that Mingus tone bro !!

  • That's how an upright bass is supposed to sound. Most modern upright bass players sound like they're playing some kind of electric upright.

  • your camera sounds delicious

  • I have been considering the purchase of gut strings for my bass. I have an Underwood pickup now. I was concerned about the E & A strings sounding weak, especially that big fat E. But, it sounds like you are happy with set that you got from Global Gut String Co. Also, did you have any issues with the E string sliding through the hole in your tuning machine?

    Thanks,

    Barry

  • @bjhayman Hey Barry, you can boost the bass on your amp and you'll get a good tone out of E/A strings! No problem stringing machines, with that said you have to remember that when this bass was made they only had gut strings! hope this helped!

  • @cdiaz55 Okay. I will give the gut strings a try. Thanks so much for replying back to me!

  • @cdiaz55 thanks

  • @cdiaz55 I just got my stings in the mail today but not sure how to install them. Could I call you to ask some questions? Barry

  • Sure thing Barry whats up?

  • @cdiaz55 I just received my set from the global gut string company. The hole in my machine heads are too small to feed the E and A strings through. How do I secure them? Drill our the holes larger?

  • @bjhayman Hey Barry is your bass a newer bass! my bass machines holes are pretty good size! I'm sure drilling out hole would work, are strings or is it possible to shave a little bit of string down to get it started and make sure you get a lot of wrap around machine barrel!

  • @cdiaz55 Yes mine is a new bass and the hole are smaller. I like your idea of shaving down the string to fit the hole.. thanks. How about the other end of the strings, especially the A and E strings that are so big. How did you tie a knot in them to secure in the tailpiece? Thanks

  • @bjhayman I used a set of regular pliers(not needle nose)! first off don't try to tie knot to close to end of string, if your strings are like mine they are very long so start knot about 5-6" from end this will give you better pull both ends! use pliers at short end of string and get a good grip with long end and get knot as tight as your can! knot will tighten it self when you start to tune up! hope this help!

  • @cdiaz55 Great! Thanks for all the help and tips about how to tie the knots.

  • @bjhayman Where did you get the strings? I have a Kay bass that is pretty small but in decent shape. I just need a bridge and nut. Where is the best place to get strings? Thanks.

  • @CapricornBeast666 I got my strings off ebay from the global gut string co. they always a set up for auction!

  • is the sound from a mic or from the piezo?

  • @foobargorch recorded from mic on video camera only! bass not plugged in! hope this helps!

  • @cdiaz55 yeah I think I'm going to buy me some ;-)

The E/A sound a bit weak but i guess that could be the camera mic too, but the D/G sound really sweet. Worst case I don't like them. Second worst is I try to mix a set. Best case is they are as fun as they look in the video =)

    Thanks for uploading

  • @foobargorch I get the E/A back when my underwood pickup is plugged in! D/G sound great either way! strings are tons of fun to play and takes a minute to get use to the very light tension of strings when tuned up!

  • @cdiaz55 I have high hopes, I think my realist pick up sounds a bit too harsh for anything but subtle reinforcement with my metal strings (mic'ed it sounds fine), but this is just so smooth and joyful, i gotta try it =)

Their latest batch of auction ends in 3 days... How much did yours go for?

  • @foobargorch got mine about 3 years ago for $89.00 bucks!

  • Thanks for your kind words! the strings are made by the Global gut string co. out of India! I bought my set off ebay ! you can still buy them as they always have them listed! good luck.......

  • Beautiful vintage sound !

Four strings all plain gut ? What brand of strings is it?

  • SOUNDS GREAT

  • DIG!

  • sounding sweet man

  • Nice
