I was the proud owner of a 1972 Buick LeSabre which I bought new in Wessington Springs SD in the Fall of 1972 for $3800.00. What a deal. What a car. We drove 110,000 on this machine and sold it in Gettysurg SD in about 1982. Wish I had it to restore, my dream I guess! Jim
Someone don't know how to start old iron. Before you even get in the car start floppin the foot feed, pump that bitch a dozen times or so then leave the throttle up and let the choke close. flopflopflopflopflopflopflopflopflopflopflop, then let up off it. Man that's a beauty, Harley musta been a fan of boattails. His stuff really stands the test of time compared to some shit you'd see back then, it coulda been produced had they wanted, it wasn't some bubble topped toy with fins juttin out.
What would happen if?.... A GM engineer from the 1950s were to go to the year 2001 and then return to his time with the Buick LeSabre of the 21st century....
I think we've gone a few steps back in design. Too little risks are taken I find.
@DeLorean4 They would taken that 2001 Buick they got from the 21st century and stored it away in the back room and piled old Boxes on top of it and left it there shaking their heads saying what whent wrong.
This was Harley Earl's PERSONAL car..... it was built to hold his large (6'4") frame; even though that wasn't really GMs policy where show cars were concerned. (They were supposed to be destroyed after the show tours were over. )
That car was ahead of it's time because it was made in 1951, a good few years before the big fins on cars were popular(Fall of 1956 through Summer of 1960).
nice video, it was like watching you start my car (just that mine is that hard to start sometimes) love the video, that tail light looking like the bat mobiles jet engine exhaust was freeking cool. (original bat mobile from the 60's not the remake stuff, Adam West would be proud to own that Buick hehe)
I was actually lucky enough to get a ride in this car at the Eyes on Design show at the GM tech center in 2003.There had to be at least 100 concepts from the past from all makes.Incredible! One thing I learned is that the seats do not adjust and it was made to fit Harley Earl as this was also his personal car until his retirement in 1959.I remember that the driver was well over 6" tall as was Mr. Earl. Also got to sit behind the wheel for a moment after my ride. Glad my girlfriend took photos!
there are alot of legal issues involved. if GM or whoever sells a non production concept car to the public and someone got killed. it could mean millions in law suits. same goes for pace cars as they were all modified to run high speeds and not considered stock. a shame but to the suits it makes lotsa sense
i always prefered the Y-job but this is still a looker. Im from Britain and i find that post 1970 american cars are all realy boring. I hope that companies will return to puting variety and muscle back into their cars as Europe has managed to in that time.
wel today US concept cars are mutch more disign than lets say the US production cars. Cars from the Us are so Japanese looking its terreble to see. I hope that Detroid wil build American cars like they had in the 60s & 70s
was too expensive to produce, and the look was a bit "too much" for a production car. I should also add that the car is huge and only has 2 seats, which is not very practical... This is just a show car, a concept car, like we say today...
I know it used to be able to run on alcohol, I heard they don't do the alcohol injection anymore. I know it did have the automatic power top, but I didn't know that at the National, so I didn't think to ask if it is still operable.
Now if he'd had the presence of mind to have crushed the morbidly obese lady against the far wall the vehicle's value would have spiked an instant 100 large...
It was just a concept car, similiar to the Y-Job, to display what Buick could do with automotive styling, thus it was purely a show model that, as Earls personal car, traveled the world.
Also, I think it would be silly to produce a car like this, because then the originality is gone.
What a sweet car.Nothing like owning a one of a kind car like that.AWESOME!

@nes1914 ...this car is practically priceless. It could easily fetch many millions in any auction. GM has vowed they will never sell it.

If this car didnt move for week!
u had to start it for 3 minutes at least for the oil go inside the motor!
iam not expert but u should warm it up a little that makes the life of the engine longer!
Any way i had picture of this car year ago and now i found a video of it by luck and its the exact car , didnt had a wheel that almost run out of air?
i can remember the picture :-) with Y-job and black hawk

NOw why can't Buick actually build something like that today. I know a dozen plus people who'd buy it.

Can't this car run on alcohol as well? This has the automatic power top doesn't it? Does that feature still work?

I know it used to be able to run on alcohol, I heard they don't do the alcohol injection anymore. I know it did have the automatic power top, but I didn't know that at the National, so I didn't think to ask if it is still operable.
