Mcarey, a lot of studio rehearsals are taped and then used later in biography type shows, which this is from -hence the beginning of of the song. This was around the body guard movie when people were calling her performances pre-recorded or dubbed. This was her proof, that they are not.
There is a live performance of her doing this song, when she was in South Africa I believe. It wasn't as good, because it was one of her last songs after about 16 songs and her voice was pretty shot. It's definitely on youtube.

Whitney would belt mezzo soprano notes and alto notes mainly for fullness and to show her power. But her natural range is first soprano. Her speaking voice is mad squeaky high naturally. Thats a true soprano!

However, I've listen to several video clips of Whitney in the early 80's & have never heard anything close to a squeaky high voice come out of her. I myself studied music at one of England's finest grammar schools, and one unit was "Black Gospel Across the Years" and Whitney was an extension topic, and believe me, men far more experienced than you confirmed she had a far greater range. I love Whitney to death, and this is just a general statement for all of the people making false claims to try and glorify an already amazing talent; Whitney Houston has THREE OCTAVES. Her voice spans from C3-C6, and in her earlier career she was a spinto soprano, and is now a mezzo-soprano..just so you're ALL clear.

Whitney has went higher than F6 and even lower than Bb2. I Loves You Porgy AMA is A2 in the beginning and she has went down to a G2 before. A6/bb6 Brunei IWDWS plus C7 Revelation is Here Spain 1991, and D7/Eb7 Control 1987 NYC concert.

If u listen to "O Come, O Come Emanuel" on Whitney's Last Christmas album, One Wish: The Holiday Album, U can hear how her voice has changed, but also how she's adapted to that change. It really does sound wonderful. That was the song that made me realize that she's still one of the baddest sangers ever! ;D

I am a HUGE Whitney, Mariah, Christina, & Celine fan (Whitney is my fav). One of the things that makes Ms. Houston stand out to me is her phrasing. She really knows HOW to sing. Even now that she doesn't have the range she did back then (she was never a 1st soprano, jus a 2nd soprano & 1st alto w/ a really nice extended range or falsetto; now she's just an alto with a nice falsetto)

No way! Whitney was coloratura soprano! Every note she belted from like 1986-1991 was like F5 or above in chest. Plus she has amazing head, superhead, and she can even do whistle notes easily. Top to bottom from 1982- 1994 she was coloratura soprano the highest form of soprano. From 1994 onward she became a dramatic soprano.

Whitney would belt mezzo soprano notes and alto notes mainly for fullness and to show her power. But her natural range is first soprano. Her speaking voice is mad squeaky high naturally. Thats a true soprano!

A singer like Chante More is a natural first soprano. (She can't sing lower notes as well as Mariah though). However, I've listen to several video clips of Whitney in the early 80's & have never heard anything close to a squeaky high voice come out of her. Her range was superb, but She wasn't a 1st soprano, definitely not a mezzo soprano or a coloratura soprano.

Brunei 1996 IWDWS its on youtube. Just type that in B6 highest note. She has hit a D7 when she sung Control by Janet Jackson in NYC 1987. Top to bottom Whitney has at least 4.5 octaves.

Oh Please Whitney is a first soprano. She can belt a B5 in full voice London 1986 and annuciate every word. Natalie Cole was just screaming and Whitney hit every note, and Say Little Prayer Whitney sung way higher than Natalie. You must be talking about Bridge Over Trouble Water and she was screaming!!!

The title of this song is 'This Day.' This song was originally recorded by Jennifer Holliday back in 1983 as the closing song on her debut album, 'Feel My Soul.' The song was written by Edwin Hawkins, the Father of Contemporary Gospel Music. Whitney does a wonderful job, wish she had recorded this on an LP.

Vocal technique, beauty and accomplishments aside. There is something that Whitney Houston has which NO OTHER diva possesses, and that is soul. Whitney Houston's voice comes from somewhere else, it is never "put on", never fabricated, its always genuine and that's why people are so moved by her performances. If for no other reason, this is why she is the greatest female, popular music vocalist. Period.

Beautiful song. Its always a pleasure to hear a great voice. This song reminded me of the Bodyguard theme (only slightly), but love the gospel feel to this one. When her voice cracked early on, I was worried, but the rest of it was beautiful. Also loved how Whitney was directing while she sang (backup singers stop at the wave of her hand).
