I love everything about Mary Garden - including her looks - she was glamorous but real - something she was able to express musically as well. Although some singing styles have changed since 1911, muscianship reigns supreme.
She has a special feeling for the ecstasy inherent in much of this late romantic, fin-de-siècle music. She gives the rhythm of the piece its full value, yet she remains always as in a dream. The final phrases are beyond words. A very special disk.
I am so amazed by the faculty strangers used to have, to melt completely into the french culture once arrived in Paris.
After only several months they would sing french perfectly, even more clearly that most french singers. The last one was perhaps Victoria de Los Angeles.
Thanks Doug for that treat, and don't smoke too many cigars.
SENAFOREVER-You are speaking here of another Latin singing in a similar Romance language. Many Eastern Europeans can do the same with Slavic Languages.

Mary Garden was simply gorgeous! Love
her in her Isadora Duncan pose! Her
soprano is deliciously lovely and her
later photo attests to the fact of her
beauty and magnetism through time!
Wonderfully done, Doug!

Another great Massenet role. Did Garden ever sing Esclarmonde, or was that challenging role delegated only to Sybil Sanderson?

I have never heard of Garden in Esclarmonde, a high-flying role that was not quite in her line.

Sung with great aplomb, expression and spirit. Vocally she encompasses the range and color of what is a tenor part. Magical.
