This song makes me feel like I'm sitting on a rooftop watching the world around me bustle on about its business. Its finals week here and through all that stress and confusion this song has given me a moment of clarity and freedom, thanks for that Tom.
this man went from clean acoustic music, to jazz and blues, and then ended up doing really dark music, I have never seen an artist change there style so many times and still have there every song amazing. truly underrated.
My kingdom for a Waits YouTube thread that doesn't compare him to Dylan! Let's move on already! They're 2 totally different entities. A singer/songwriter does not a Dylan make. He's great, Dylan's great...there's room for both of them!
man i do love Tom Waits....Its tough and ignorant to sy who is te best...because its not a game and its all the feel so just enjoy...its not a competition...
Dylan covers everything from life, love, God, and death, most of his better stuff being what isn't considered to be "political" or "protest songs", and I'd find it hard to compare the two on any level. You think Waits could ever write a Dylan song? Hell no, and I highly doubt Dylan could ever pull off something like this or "Old Shoes" either (which is a great one)
@NathanLocklin92 Actually I can REALLY imagine Dylan doing this song (in fact, Waits almost sounds a little Dylan-esque here), but you are right about everything else.
Thank you whoever put this on You Tube, a cruelly overlooked Tom Waits song but a good one. (is it just me or has his voice changed slightly since then?)
no words can state how beautiful this song is... you just feel like crying. thank you for this upload and most of all thanks tom for the brilliant music! :)♥♫♪
Seems like a personal thing of choice, what outlook on life, experience, etc...dylan to ME is more past- political and such. And tom waits covers more views on life, from all angles. But that is what I believe to be true, everyone is different. Good thing, right?
Wow, this doesn't sound anything like Tom Waits. I know it's him but if you go from this to his more recent stuff you think he ate some glass or something between now and then.
@FarangBalls it was recorded during "closing time," but the label decided to release it on it's own as a single. unless you can find that, the compilation is probably your only bet.
@FarangBalls I'm pretty sure both voumes of The Early Years are compilations of unreleased songs from before Closing Time, so this would be the first appearance.
Thanks for the slide show, a friend of mine sent me this song and it's really growing on me. It's amazing how I've been in music my whole life and never knew about Tom Waits. I am now a fan. Great songs and emotions.....
I "watch" a lot of music on youtube and it's amazing how many comments support this artist or that artist as the greatest song writers of all time - from Dylan to VanZandt to Steve Earle to Prine. Nothing against those great musicians, but to me it's as clear as the "blue sky": TW is the greatest song writer ever, people just don't know it yet. "Genius" gets thrown out there for everyone from politicians to football players. But Tom Waits is a genius. His songs come from magical places.
@sawtoothdan Most of the good music and good artists go unappreciated. It shouldn't be that way, but it is. It's how the system is designed and no one will dare try and challenge it, you know? I quit watching the Oscars, I quit watching Grammy award shows etc. because for me everything has gone to crap past the 90s (save for Tom Waits). I love him. He is the nicest person and writes the best music.
@sawtoothdan Van Zandt is better imo. "Him or Me" and "To Live is to Fly" are both better lyrically than any Waits song. And trust me, I'm a HUGE Waits fan.
@Rnewmanguy Um...fuck you man. Dylan fuckin' blows compared to Waits. In both songwriting AND singing. You can't beat Waits man; Dylan may very well be more popular, but he'll NEVER be anywhere near as good as Waits.
@vitunpaskiainen nah dylan is better you're just mistaken for some reason. as a songwriter dylan doesn't blow compared to anyone - waits himself would call you a dick for saying that. how many waits albums do you have? how many dylan albums?
I love Waits but, why anyone feels the need to compare him to Dylan or any other incredible artist is a cosmic waste of time. And by way your comment clearly indicates that your some kind of Schmuck.
@sawtoothdan alot of people think that Tom Waits "Can't sing" but he just changes his voice according to what he is performing. He is one of the last "true to heart" musicians that has not sold out to the bloodsucking industry.
Incroyable voix et sensation qui te dérange, te berce pour t'emmener vers un paradis musical. C'est vrai entre Dylan, Marianne Faithfull et tom Waits, Quel bonheur
@sawtoothdan I think the number of songs written by Tom that became hits by other artists kinda reinforces that. In all those cases I still prefer Tom's original song. ;-)
That's a nice job with this song I was not familiar with this version and like his voice. Sweet man!!
