  • That's a nice job with this song I was not familiar with this version and like his voice. Sweet man!!

  • This song makes me feel like I'm sitting on a rooftop watching the world around me bustle on about its business. Its finals week here and through all that stress and confusion this song has given me a moment of clarity and freedom, thanks for that Tom.

  • Still love Bings version, but Tom certainly gives the song soul.

  • The camera loves Tom.

  • Damn cigs. What a beautiful voice.

  • FunnyJunk sent me here....

  • @chaoscreater96 same here my friend

  • @ 0:21, is that Tom with a face-lift look? Did he had one? Someone?

  • @ronaldsneek nah, just breast implants, but his face reflected the extra confidence it gave him

  • thumbs up if you had to replay

  • tom is in my top 10 for sure,,,,,read the book low side of the road,,by barney hoskyns it will explain the voice change etc........

  • He doesn't sound like Tom Waits!

  • Dos meses cantando esta cancion por ahi por la cuadra donde trabajo, por los prados y tal :)

  • The only problem I have with this song is how it's 2 min 14 sec. Not 21 min, 40 sec.

  • He quits drinkin'whiskey!

  • Tom, your music is the best drinking partner I've ever had.

  • Wow, comparing this to "Ruby's Arms" they're so different in vocals :P

  • I've loved tom waits for years, is this really him? this song is beautifull, but I'm very suprised it came from him. He is a true artist

  • always great...

  • some of the time the way he sings is similar to bruce, cool voice on both of them

  • he was bad ass in Bram Stokers Dracula

  • this man went from clean acoustic music, to jazz and blues, and then ended up doing really dark music, I have never seen an artist change there style so many times and still have there every song amazing. truly underrated.

  • oh my freeking god....he had one clear voice back in the day :)

  • My kingdom for a Waits YouTube thread that doesn't compare him to Dylan! Let's move on already! They're 2 totally different entities. A singer/songwriter does not a Dylan make. He's great, Dylan's great...there's room for both of them!

  • Oh hey, I saw him in "The Fisher King" :) But I found this Video because of the Movie "Patch Adams". What a cool co-incident :D

  • man i do love Tom Waits....Its tough and ignorant to sy who is te best...because its not a game and its all the feel so just enjoy...its not a competition...

  • Whats wrong with those people who pressed "dislike"?

  • @ddbnewmexico They were probably expecting the Irving Berlin song (and nothing wrong with that either).

  • Great song... what album is this on?

  • Dylan covers everything from life, love, God, and death, most of his better stuff being what isn't considered to be "political" or "protest songs", and I'd find it hard to compare the two on any level. You think Waits could ever write a Dylan song? Hell no, and I highly doubt Dylan could ever pull off something like this or "Old Shoes" either (which is a great one)

  • @NathanLocklin92 Actually I can REALLY imagine Dylan doing this song (in fact, Waits almost sounds a little Dylan-esque here), but you are right about everything else.

  • Thank you whoever put this on You Tube, a cruelly overlooked Tom Waits song but a good one. (is it just me or has his voice changed slightly since then?)

  • i must admit i was getting slowly angry at loosing this girl to a mate, but Tom helped me keep it cool more than snoop, pac or anyone, respect to Tom

  • Beautiful as always - never heard this before, thank you. Great photos as always too. JC / England

  • Tom waits inspires me

  • jeezes

    this is so f***** awesome

  • This is the coolest man on the planet.

    Gillyshines

  • sometimes it's just being a man of worth that leaves you hurt..overcome it all and save somebody....erick

  • no words can state how beautiful this song is... you just feel like crying. thank you for this upload and most of all thanks tom for the brilliant music! :)♥♫♪

  • @FarangBalls heart of a saturday night

  • Seems like a personal thing of choice, what outlook on life, experience, etc...dylan to ME is more past- political and such. And tom waits covers more views on life, from all angles. But that is what I believe to be true, everyone is different. Good thing, right?

  • @FarangBalls I dont know exactly but i have it on Early Years Vol. 2. Happy hunting.

  • Am i being completely off, or does Bruce Springsteen sounds a lot like a young Tom Waits?

  • this wasn't the song i was looking for but so glad i found it

    happy chance x

  • its on early years volume 2 but get both and do yourself a good turn.

  • His voice was so smooth back then.

  • @SaricOsijek Cigarettes can mess you up :P

  • @supah1337B also, he screamed into a pillow till he got his voice where it is now

  • "Give me another woman to take Her place."

  • Who are you people that pushes the dislike button? You're like bacteria clinging to the earth for no reason.

  • @diamonddust22 Haha, well said my friend!

  • @CharlieMcCotton :) thanks man

  • why can't i click Like a million times :/ why am i just limited to one D:

i love this song so much :) its one of my all time favorite Tom Waits songs ^_^

  • How cud somebody click a dislike button on this? Don't get it...

  • tom waits looks like the guy thats HUGE at my gym hahahah

  • this song was greated in start of 70's, there are older version ofthis song in tales fro the underground vol 1

  • this song was greated in start of 70's, there are older version ofthis song in tales fro the underground vol 1

  • Awesome !!!

  • this is off the albums "the early years vol1 and 2". It is a collection of songs he recorded before "closing time" his first album

  • This song is sometimes too good to listen to.

  • is this Tom?

that's impossible, on wich cd is it?

  • christ that was amazing!!!!!

  • this is tom waits?

  • his voice has changed over the years but all his stuff new and old are great!

  • he has two albums Early Years I and Early Years II but as far as the original album, i dk. he has sooo many.

  • Wow, this doesn't sound anything like Tom Waits. I know it's him but if you go from this to his more recent stuff you think he ate some glass or something between now and then.

  • lol! yeah that is what years of smoking hardcore will do to you.

  • believe me thats alcohol nt smoking. Haardcore smoking gives you a nasty fucking cough.

  • everytime i here tom waits i like his music more

  • If you think hes a genius now watch the Dr P film! He makes the Devil seem like a really good guy! Now that is a trick...

  • is this the first appearance of this song? i want the original album it was on, not a compilation.... thanks anyways

  • I was not in any album per se 'cause Waits didn't approved the release of Early Years Vol. I and II so this version is the only one as far as I know

  • @FarangBalls he never released the songs on those 2 albums,

theyre demos that he made prior to his first album

the compalations are the only way to get them

  • @FarangBalls it's on EBAY... or it was rather! 12" VINYL with 2 songs. Released sometime in the 1970s.

  • @FarangBalls it was recorded during "closing time," but the label decided to release it on it's own as a single. unless you can find that, the compilation is probably your only bet.

  • @thehopelesscaus thanks for the info. I just finished reading the Barney Hoskins biography on TW. Great detail in it

  • @FarangBalls I'm pretty sure both voumes of The Early Years are compilations of unreleased songs from before Closing Time, so this would be the first appearance.

  • @FarangBalls

Early years Volumes 1&2 are compilations of songs he recorded before he released closing time.

  • @FarangBalls nighthawks at the diner

  • Thanks for the slide show, a friend of mine sent me this song and it's really growing on me. It's amazing how I've been in music my whole life and never knew about Tom Waits. I am now a fan. Great songs and emotions.....

  • thank you

  • many thanks for posting

    the dude's the s**t

  • I "watch" a lot of music on youtube and it's amazing how many comments support this artist or that artist as the greatest song writers of all time - from Dylan to VanZandt to Steve Earle to Prine. Nothing against those great musicians, but to me it's as clear as the "blue sky": TW is the greatest song writer ever, people just don't know it yet. "Genius" gets thrown out there for everyone from politicians to football players. But Tom Waits is a genius. His songs come from magical places.

  • so true

  • @sawtoothdan Most of the good music and good artists go unappreciated. It shouldn't be that way, but it is. It's how the system is designed and no one will dare try and challenge it, you know? I quit watching the Oscars, I quit watching Grammy award shows etc. because for me everything has gone to crap past the 90s (save for Tom Waits). I love him. He is the nicest person and writes the best music.

  • @sawtoothdan Van Zandt is better imo. "Him or Me" and "To Live is to Fly" are both better lyrically than any Waits song. And trust me, I'm a HUGE Waits fan.

  • @ronrutherford Van Zandt sounds like everyone else to me. There's no difference between him and most folk singers. Typical 70's sound. Lame.

  • @sawtoothdan

    Well said!

  • @sawtoothdan that's retarded. dylan is a better songwriter than waits. both are good though.

  • @Rnewmanguy Um...fuck you man. Dylan fuckin' blows compared to Waits. In both songwriting AND singing. You can't beat Waits man; Dylan may very well be more popular, but he'll NEVER be anywhere near as good as Waits.

  • @vitunpaskiainen nah dylan is better you're just mistaken for some reason. as a songwriter dylan doesn't blow compared to anyone - waits himself would call you a dick for saying that. how many waits albums do you have? how many dylan albums?

  • @vitunpaskiainen

I love Waits but, why anyone feels the need to compare him to Dylan or any other incredible artist is a cosmic waste of time. And by way your comment clearly indicates that your some kind of Schmuck.

  • @sawtoothdan damn straight!

  • @sawtoothdan Its true.....

  • @sawtoothdan Townse Van Zandt was a storyteller, Very different.

  • @sawtoothdan alot of people think that Tom Waits "Can't sing" but he just changes his voice according to what he is performing. He is one of the last "true to heart" musicians that has not sold out to the bloodsucking industry.

  • @sawtoothdan

Incroyable voix et sensation qui te dérange, te berce pour t'emmener vers un paradis musical. C'est vrai entre Dylan, Marianne Faithfull et tom Waits, Quel bonheur

  • @sawtoothdan Positive! He is Genius !

  • @sawtoothdan I think the number of songs written by Tom that became hits by other artists kinda reinforces that. In all those cases I still prefer Tom's original song. ;-)

  • You did such a right thing, posting this song...

One of the most beautiful tunes ever writen...

I fall in love with it every time and again

  • I think I just fell in love with him. He's really amazing.

  • Awazing how different his voice sounds years later after all the smoke and booze.

  • This i a great song, and I really like the little slide show!

  • yes, thanks! this one is definitely one of my favorites. Great song and nice slideshow.

  • A bit scary dude, anyway great song.

  • I introduced my dad to Tom Waits last summer, and I think it scared him. He would have really loved the Early Years.

  • Thank you !

  • Nice!

  • I've never heard this version, I've a completely different version + ill post it shortly....this is great!!

  • I really like this song and I couldn't find it on youtube ->> me too !!! thanks !!

  • Man, wonderful. Tom Waits early stuff proves he can do it all... Weird, haunting music aswell as painfully beautiful music like this.

  • Beautiful, cutting--- This song still kills me..

    <3

  • I love this song

  • Great.
