Mitch Janes the bass player who played their brother on the show was actually way older then the other guys matter of fact he was their teacher in school
What a wonderful group! I recall them fondly from their appearances on Andy Griffith's hit 60's TV sitcom. Talented to the max, daddy-o! THANKS so much for sharing this delightful footage with us! :)
love it. When i was a kid in the late 60's, my folks had a fun group of friends that included some guys that used to play the banjo, guitar, mandolin and even ukelele. The used to play a lot of bluegrass music. Its why I love it to this day. Just fun music with a lot of history. Wish I could play like that.

I have this song on my iPod and when it comes on my son and I usually listen to it about 20 times in a row. I never tire of it, it puts a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. It KICKS ASS!!
@LighthawkTenchi If you listen to the song on their original album: Back Porch Bluegrass, it sure sounds like "ton" (it's on youtube if you search for it). But on the AG show and in other versions it's "drum".
And mama corked the bottles and old Dooley fetched 'em out Dooley slippin' up the holler Dooley try to make a dollar Dooley gimme a swaller and I'll pay you back someday.

I got to see them play right around 1976-77 I think. I Went with my folks.
Then I took interest in those Flatt & Scruggs records they had sitting in the console :)
I've loved bluegrass ever since.

Good band, and great song, but the audio recorded in the video is really poor. All the bass is missing.
If you get a chance, re-record and re-upload this video that has better audio.

Yes it is the "Darlings" from the Andy Griffith Show!! Their actual name was The Dillards. A blue grass group through many generations.

The revenuers came for him a-slippin' through the woods
Dooley kept behind them all and never lost his goods
Dooley was a trader when into town he'd come
Sugar by the bushel and molasses by the ton.
I remember very well the day old Dooley died
The women folk weren't sorry and the men stood around and cried
Now Dooley's on the mountain he lies there all alone
They put a jug beside him and a barrel for his stone.

That's "Molasses by the DRUM" and "The women folk LOOKED sorry"
Tommy2Tons 4 years ago 2
I thought it was molasses by the ton as well. Thanks for the update.

gildone84 10 months ago
@gildone84 Right, I understand. Still, one can easily get confused if they're not listening closely.
LighthawkTenchi 10 months ago
@LighthawkTenchi I've listened to their Backporch Bluegrass version several times. They really are saying "ton" in that version.
gildone84 10 months ago
@gildone84 I don't doubt it. In the mp3 I have of them singing this song, they're singing "ton" as well, so it depends on the version of the song.

Dooley was a good old man
he lived below the mill
Dooley had two daughters and a forty-gallon still
One gal watched the boiler
the other watched spout
And mama corked the bottles and old Dooley fetched 'em out Dooley slippin' up the holler Dooley try to make a dollar Dooley gimme a swaller and I'll pay you back someday.
