  • Oooh that's a good'un! One...two...three....and away we go...

  • this is music

  • Great music

  • Love it! Good memories of Andy G show and now crave Bluegrass as an adult, thanks!

  • who is that one person that disliked this???

  • @ghtispishposh I would like to know as well

  • @ghtispishposh ONE communist watched this video.

  • I'm sorry to hear that Mitch ,the man on bass, passed away.

  • I got to see them play right around 1976-77 I think. I Went with my folks.

Then I took interest in those Flatt & Scruggs records they had sitting in the console :)

    I've loved bluegrass ever since.

  • the boys are all keyed up.

  • What a wonderful group! I recall them fondly from their appearances on Andy Griffith's hit 60's TV sitcom. Talented to the max, daddy-o! THANKS so much for sharing this delightful footage with us! :)

  • love it. When i was a kid in the late 60's, my folks had a fun group of friends that included some guys that used to play the banjo, guitar, mandolin and even ukelele. The used to play a lot of bluegrass music. Its why I love it to this day. Just fun music with a lot of history. Wish I could play like that.

  • Fine music! Extra good. I remember you all on The Andy Griffith Show.

  • Great band!

  • Good band, and great song, but the audio recorded in the video is really poor. All the bass is missing.

If you get a chance, re-record and re-upload this video that has better audio.

  • omg. this is freakin awesome!! ah wish i was there! are they still playing? how in the world old are they now???

  • @10aj01 Doug and Rodney are still playing but in different bands. Doug is the banjo player and Rodney is the guitar player.

  • are these the guys that were in the Andy Griffith show?

  • yep

  • @dukefan24112

Yes it is the "Darlings" from the Andy Griffith Show!! Their actual name was The Dillards. A blue grass group through many generations.

  • I don't know where I am?

  • Thank you for sharing this!!! Mitch's stories are always terrific and they even change over the years aloT!!!!

  • I have this song on my iPod and when it comes on my son and I usually listen to it about 20 times in a row. I never tire of it, it puts a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. It KICKS ASS!!

  • @mr10pm Amen Bro. Love this Song listen to it all the time.

  • is that a pink bass Mitch?

    Great Video.

  • The revenuers came for him a-slippin' through the woods

Dooley kept behind them all and never lost his goods

Dooley was a trader when into town he'd come

Sugar by the bushel and molasses by the ton.

I remember very well the day old Dooley died

The women folk weren't sorry and the men stood around and cried

Now Dooley's on the mountain he lies there all alone

They put a jug beside him and a barrel for his stone.

  • That's "Molasses by the DRUM" and "The women folk LOOKED sorry"

  • I thought it was molasses by the ton as well. Thanks for the update.

  • @LighthawkTenchi If you listen to the song on their original album: Back Porch Bluegrass, it sure sounds like "ton" (it's on youtube if you search for it). But on the AG show and in other versions it's "drum".

  • @gildone84 Right, I understand. Still, one can easily get confused if they're not listening closely.

  • @LighthawkTenchi I've listened to their Backporch Bluegrass version several times. They really are saying "ton" in that version.

  • @gildone84 I don't doubt it. In the mp3 I have of them singing this song, they're singing "ton" as well, so it depends on the version of the song.

  • Dooley was a good old man

    he lived below the mill

Dooley had two daughters and a forty-gallon still

    One gal watched the boiler

    the other watched spout

And mama corked the bottles and old Dooley fetched 'em out Dooley slippin' up the holler Dooley try to make a dollar Dooley gimme a swaller and I'll pay you back someday.

  • I have been waiting for this a long time ... thank you very kindly :)

  • I love this song. I remember seeing it on The Andy Griffith show when I was a kid.

  • The Dillards were great!

  • My favorite band ever! Thank you SO much for sharing this!
