That adjustable knot and this truckers hitch /watch?v=w9YVoZMndbc work great together for tying a line tight or tying down a load on a vehicle. Just wrap around what ever your tying it down to, then do the truckers hitch and this adjustable knot pulled all the way through though and then put over the load being tied down and tie a quick release knot on the other side, then walk back around and pull this adjustable knot to tighten down the load.
I'm absolutely loving your vids man, I found this one especially helpful. Wish I lived closer to Cornwall so I could come to some of your events, but hey.

@byronlegend Hi bud, your trying to register on the wrong part, go back to the main website at the start and register there, that will get you into the website and the forum then. Good luck, see you there,
i tied my hammock rope to a bar and made one of those adjustable hitches with the loop clipped through my hammock's carabiner. i was able to suspend my complete body weight on that loop/knot, and it didn't budge. so i guess i'll try that knot for tightening my hammock next time i go camping!
@hazzathebest The shop I got mine from is no longer in business, it is a Tatonka Polycotton Tarp though which you will be able to find elsewhere. DD Hammocks also produce some good Tarps now.
I just cant understand the way you tie the evenk knot with your hand. It seems much easier to just make a loop, pass the end under and through the loop then tighten.
@ortsa123 It might look a little odd on camera; but bear in mind I'm slowing everything down and manoeuvring the knot so it can be seen clearly on camera. There's nothing wrong with tying it this way; it's just the way I prefer to do it and it is quite efficient when you learn it; I've just tried... and I can tie the knot with my eyes closed in 2 seconds. - That's good enough for me.
Thanks, I appreciate you saying that... but something I've noticed whilst editing the video: I've got to stop saying "Ok" at the start of every scene!
Here's a tip from a stateside "cousin," something I got from a book by Jan Adkins. The ridgeline you're pitching there is not going to be as tight as it could be without the use of a round turn. From your end of the pond, I understand the saying is "A round turn saved Her Majesty's ship." For the uninitiated, it is simply seeing the surface area of the tie-off point as an opportunity to gain more stability. In other words, "once around before you work at the knot." Good on ya', mate.
The Evenk Knot get's its name from the Evenk people of Northern Russia who would keep herds of Reindeer and the 'evenk knot' is the knot they use to tie reindeer to trees. It's quick & easy to tie and is quick release.

a good idea for the first knot is to pass the rope through the loop to make another loop for safety

:D not necesarily, its one of these knots old as mankind. He however definitely have it from somewhere...
DudeNumberOnePlus 2 years ago
@scargill8 - Ray Mears was not the first to use it. It has been used by mariners for hundreds of years and Ray learnt it from someoen else.
