Why do you think Google has so many features? Yes they're huge so what? Yes they keep information processed through their servers SO WHAT. They're a search engine which grew to much more than that. That's not scary, that's being fucking smart. If you purchase something online and submit your credit card number, google isn't going to have record of this. Haha! Of course Google is keeping this information. It's like you willingly taking a survey and giving over your perspective. Google is going to keep that information to see what's the broad range if peoples interests (what you search), where they are (I.P. Adress), and any relevance to the information kept. Not as if they know what you look like, cookies can be easily deleted, it's a small cache file that just says "i've been here". It's not scary it's rediculous, you can only blame yourself.

I think it's because google has become more than a search engine. They have developed so many innovative and FREE products and did it effectively. Google earth, picasa, Gmail to name a few. As for searching, it's like they said in this video, it has has more urls then all of google's competitors combined.
