@drdoomdaniel actually the Lifehouse is original. There's no original cause Pete reated TWO songs, totally differents, not just in melodies, but in lyrics too. and some people still mistake. i hope you all stop at an moment and listen to lifehouse
I dont`t care about who knows more about The Who, if it is Baba O`Riley or Teenage Wasteland. Life (and Lifehouse) is not a contest. I have this dvd and it is the most touching masterpiece of music/performance/lyrics and a mature Pete. I strongly recomend it for whooligans and juniores and everyone with a heart to listen to that message. Just join together in the band or not.
@benitoembuto The Who bit might be slightly misleading, but I figured its close ties to Who's Next made it worth putting there. And no, the Teenage Wasteland bit is completely accurate. If you don't know the name of the song you're looking up, you deserve to come across inaccurate results. I don't google Mozart and get angry when I don't get Chopin.
it's called Baba O' Riley, I just hate it when people get it wrong. I even heard someone call Won't Get Fooled Again- Teenage Wasteland. At least you both know some good Who music...
@Marco20015 *rolls eyes* no it isn't. It's compeletely different piece of music that only shares about 80% of the lyrics. Pete wrote it as a seperate song.
oh i get it now. Teenage Wasteland is this version which is slower and has more lyrics. Baba O'Riley is the regular rock version by the Who, that most people mistake for Teenage Wasteland
So my question is: Is this a Pete Townsend song or a Who song? The song never made it on a Who album (Who's next) even though that was the original intention. And as far as I know, the Who never performed this song. So I'm not coming here to say this is Baba O'riley, but I would say that it's not a Who song. Pete has many recorded songs that are not Who songs. Thoughts?
@64eski It's a Pete Townshend song, but considering the close ties to Who's Next and Lifehouse and the Who, I figured I'd just put their name in the title anyway. And I uploaded a few other songs from that concert at the same time and they were all Who songs.
ive heard the actual studio recording of this and its fab!there is a difference musically although the lyrics are mainly the same!this pete townshend track"teenage wasteland"was originally for the lifehouse project but when that came to a halt it was redone with the who into baba O`rIley for the "who`s next" album
Tranchera, Thank You for Posting. Peter is Simply Amazing...So many inspirational and thought provoking words heard worldwide from 'One' for nearly 5 Decades...
This is just a different arrangement of BABA O'RILEY aka TEENAGE WASTELAND... so pull ya head out of ya arzes & listen. And what's unusual about Rock musicians/ bands playing with Orchestras? ..... many of the greats have ....
Sometimes people ask me why I listen to old music, even though I'm 19. So, I get them to listen to a song like this, and say, "find me a new song that's as good as this." In our modern age with rappers killing each other with so called 'lyrics,' media jokes such as Justin Bieber dominating little girls, and the Jonas Sisters (or whatever) taking over Disney channel, I'll stick with my classic rock. I'll stick with the Who. Maybe I was born in the wrong era...
Dude, you're not discribing modern music there, you're discribing mainstream music there,
There is a gigantic difference, It's really unfortunate that loads of people who listen to bands such as the Who, are al so pessimistic about todays music. You should give it a chance.

I have to say it is a bit weird hearing someone whom I am used to hearing rock out play with an orchestra. However Pete is a musical genius and this setup even if it does differ from the norm is still brilliant and sounds great.
baba o'riley is about a farmer going to search for his daughter, this song is about that farmer and the event that lead his daughter to run away, thus leading into Baba o' riley, after going mobile is played from the girls perspective, am i right?

Fucking beautiful, the Lifehouse Choicles are brilliant, and their not even the real thing. Though it is more annoying when people call Baba O'Riley, Teenage Wasteland.
I gotta be honest. This popular modern phenomena of rock and pop stars performing their greatest hits while backed by these enormous orchestras is embarrassingly pretentious and lame. Takes all the "rock" out of the rock and transforms the tunes into sexless, emotionless and lifeless pieces of shit. Townsend's one of the my favorites and I appreciate him as a person, not just a player. This bombastic symphony nonsense has to stop, however. This is cringe-worthy stuff, folks
@ritter89 I partially agree, but it's really no different from the unplugged craze of the 90's. Rock musicians have been craving legitimacy from the "serious" music world for 40 or more years. Orchestration of a well known song probably does this in their eyes. It's like anything, it works on some material and not on others. I happen to think that it more or less works here, but then Pete's compositions have always had a grandeur that lends itself to that kind of treatment.
Alright the song is Teenage Wasteland but the fact that it has the same lyrics and is just slower also makes it Baba O'Riley seeing as that was the original than Pete made this song. It is a good song.
Saying this song and Baba O' Riley are the same is like saying the songs "Sentimental" and "Normal" are the same (for those of you familiar with Porcupine Tree). I find it laughable how much people figure that lyrics make a song what it is, and disregard everything else. Especially when the lyrics aren't even the same.
Ok, I dont see why you guys seem to think this is baba o reily.
Baba o reily orginated from this song, and indeed it shares some of its charactristics. but simply, the start of the song has a completely different chord structure. CAnt you hear it, or are you all tone deaf?
IT was on the album lifehouse chronicles, which was never fully finished.
Beautiful. This obviously isn't Baba O'Riley to whoever thinks it is, your obviously an idiot. I also hate the way people called Baba O'Riley, Teenage Wasteland, that's fuckin' annoying.
Look people call Baba O'Riley Teenage Wasteland because it is repeated in the song many times but the name of the song is Baba O'Riley, This is another song realesed by the who called teenage wasteland. 2 different songs. Teenage wasteland was the worknig title for Baba O'Rilley but they changed it and realesed another song called Teenage Wasteland.
its stupid to say this is just baba o riley...that being said, theres clearly parts of this song that made their way into other songs or vice versa. you can definitely hear the chord progression from pure and easy in there
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
btws this is a live concert, those tend to have slightly different arrangements. so people can get a little surprise instead of just hearing wats on the album.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
oh i didnt know caps lock supports arguments better, then again this is the internet. lets give it a try, maybe this will persuade u!!
ITS THE SAME SONG, JUST A DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENT WITH SUPER AWESOME BONUS LYRICS!!!! SAME SOLO, SAME CHORUS WITH A FEW EXTRA VERSES. AND NO SYNTHESIZER.
No it's a different song, this is Teenage Wasteland. It was written for the abandoned rock opera 'Lifehouse'. Yes, it does have similar lyrics but if you listen to The Who's other rock operas (Tommy, Quadrophenia) there are lyrics and music used in multiple songs such as 'See Me Feel Me' and 'Listening To You' are used in 'Go to the Mirror' and 'We're not gonna take it'.
@fearlessdreamchaser Agreed! THIS is Teenage Wasteland. Baba O'riley was supposed to be the opening song to Lifehouse and this was later in the opera. When the project failed they reworked Baba and released it as a stand alone song. But people, to this day, think it's titled Teenage Wasteland. Not surprising when you remember that people still think CCR was telling people that the bathroom was on the right.
Yo lets settle this once and for all everybody: THE NOTES IN THIS SONG ARE DIFFERENT THAN THE ONES IN BABA O'RILEY AND THERE ARE SOME DIFFERING LYRICS IT IS A DIFFERENT SONG.
everybody arguing here is an idiot. both teenage wasteland and baba orileyre the same. every single word in baba oriley is in teenage wasteland. the solo is just about exactly the same. Teenage wastleand just has and extended beginning and baba has some parts added to the end. saint saens added a few bars to the beggining of Bacchanale, it wood still be the same song. if lil wayne added a freestyle to the end of fireman, it would still be the same song. u guys r idiots for fighting like this
Yeah they're very close but at the same time very different. That's the magic of Pete Townshend, he can slow a song down and add a few more lyrics and it will still feel like fresh :)
@reargef If they both actually contained the same music throughout the whole song your argument would be valid, but 3/4ths of the song are completely different, even though they share some lyrics. Baba O'Reily and Teenage Wasteland are two related, yet distinctly different, songs.
@Matinee909 Hey guess what, this song SUCKS, yes it totally Sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is Pete having a Sting moment???? Some people just don't get it and the try so hard to reinvent themselves and that is what Pete is so desperately trying to do here. Some times it requires the sum of all the parts to be great. Are you listening Pete?
@tmawl Maybe the guy loves music... If he creates music take it or leave it. Don't waste your time telling everyone 'it sucks'. You do know that half the band have passed away? Do you expect the rest of them to lay down their instruments? The fact that you compare a famous band member going solo to Sting tells me your experience of music is limited; hundreds of artists have done it, Sting wasn't the first and he isn't the most notable. Plus it's a bad example, Pete ain't being political.
@Matinee909 No I didn't know that, thanks for sharing it with me you dumb ass. Here is what I absolutely do know, I have forgotten more about music and the history of music then you will ever acquired in a life time. Your right, it was a bad comparison because Sting was the lead man in the Police and his solo career was a success and Pete...well we know all about his solo career. I know Roger and I know what a douchebag Pete was, spare me your bullshit, you havent a clue.
@tmawl When I comment on your knowledge of music I base it on the stupidity expressed in your comments. For all you can possibly know I may be an expert on music in comparison. I've played bass, guitar and drums for 14 years, I have music and music tech A levels, an English degree in which I did two 40,000 word dissertations on song writing (not to mention other course work). Plus I love music more than most. When you tell me I know nothing when you have no evidence, you just look stupid.
@Matinee909 Why are you calling me a dumbass for asking you if you know half the band have died? It was your 'sum of all parts' comment that made me ask the question, you were chatting as if Pete should stick to playing with The Who... but as I have taught you, half of them have died so that isn't a possibility. And you, who claims to be such an expert, thinks that Pete should not persue a solo career... If you really loved music you wouldn't be saying that.
@Matinee909 When I tell you "I have forgotten more about music and the history of music then you will ever acquired in a life time," it is because of your obvious insecurities and desire to impress people with your musical what? Career? Get over your self, I blow harp, I play and sing and I perform when ever I can. It is not my life but I thoroughly enjoy all music. I give two shits about you and your passion for music, you think that your unique... i am done with you child.
@tmawl Talking of insecurities; I never said I had a 'musical career', I simply said I play various instruments and have studied music. If you equate that to 'bragging about a musical career' then it's logical to think that your experience of any music scene is non-existant. I do actually earn money from music but so do about 30-40 people in my hometown, it's no big deal and it adds to my wage as a temp. My point was that you know nothing about me so can not question my knowledge of music.
@tmawl Besides, you bragged about your 'forgetfulness' BEFORE I gave you my musical credentials, so how the fuck was it a response to my 'obvious insecurities and desire to impress people'? You proved that you spout nonsense without knowing what you are talking about. Your homepage says '31' but your use of language demonstrates you are more like 15/16. You certainly come across as younger than my 23 years... 'child'.
@reargef It's a totally different song, it's rythmically and melodically totally different from Baba O'Riley, plus there are a lot more lyrics, these 2 can hardly be considered the same song. This is Teenage Wasteland and the song on Who's Next is Baba O'Riley. Only an idiot could consider these 2 the same song just because some of the the parts match. If Pete Townshend says this song is Teenage Wasteland, then this is not Baba O'Riley.
baba and tenage wasted land are two completli differnt song in two different keys that share some lyrics but they are two different ends of the wondefull lifehouse. this is pure ginius. god bows down befor pete, go on evryone bow down before your master pete.
This is not Baba O'Riley guys. Townshed worked on Baba O'Riley and provided the "early electronic music experimentation" (Wikipedia). So he has partial rights to the lyrics and tune. But he decided to create his own song by adding lyrics to it.
yo idiot, this is a completely different song. if u knew anything about the who at all, you would know that this is not baba o'riley. do u hear any synthesizer at all in this???
i was at the lifehouse cronicals gig at sadlers wells but i had to buy an expensive ticket of a tout so i couldnt afford the album that was being sold there counl anybody send me a copy via email??? please
I like the Lifehouse Chronicles version of this. Thanks for posting this. I guess you don't like hearing condescending corrections from the idiots who consider themselves Die-Hard WHO Fans because they watch all 3 CSI TV shows! Haha!

It is a good song.
plofisto777 1 year ago
Why so slow and non rockish?
8000cheese 1 year ago
@8000cheese if you research Pete's "Lifehouse", his intended 2nd rock opera, this was to be the opening track.

Baba O'Riley (teenage wasteland)
Teenage wasteland is THIS song

its stupid to say this is just baba o riley...that being said, theres clearly parts of this song that made their way into other songs or vice versa. you can definitely hear the chord progression from pure and easy in there

By your definition, on the album "Tommy";
"Pinball Wizard" & "I'm Free" are the same song because they share the same guitar riff.
Or "Go to the Mirror" & "We're Not Gonna Take It" are the same due to the "Listening To You" part.
How about Quadrophenia & hearing the themes throughout the whole album, by horn or instrumental piece or lyrics?
"My Jacket's gonna be cut slim & checked.."
"Love reign O'er Me"
These are concept albums. Themes. When writing a story, you tend to come full circle.

no one knows wat its like to be the bad man
reargef 2 years ago
@reargef
No it's a different song, this is Teenage Wasteland. It was written for the abandoned rock opera 'Lifehouse'. Yes, it does have similar lyrics but if you listen to The Who's other rock operas (Tommy, Quadrophenia) there are lyrics and music used in multiple songs such as 'See Me Feel Me' and 'Listening To You' are used in 'Go to the Mirror' and 'We're not gonna take it'.
fearlessdreamchaser 2 years ago 8
@fearlessdreamchaser Agreed! THIS is Teenage Wasteland. Baba O'riley was supposed to be the opening song to Lifehouse and this was later in the opera. When the project failed they reworked Baba and released it as a stand alone song. But people, to this day, think it's titled Teenage Wasteland. Not surprising when you remember that people still think CCR was telling people that the bathroom was on the right.

everybody arguing here is an idiot. both teenage wasteland and baba orileyre the same. every single word in baba oriley is in teenage wasteland. the solo is just about exactly the same.

@reargef actually Pete Townshend wrote them as seperate songs. Ive heard it from his own mouth. So shut up.
cookienuts3 1 year ago
@reargef
Yeah they're very close but at the same time very different. That's the magic of Pete Townshend, he can slow a song down and add a few more lyrics and it will still feel like fresh :)
Janne112 1 year ago 2
@reargef If they both actually contained the same music throughout the whole song your argument would be valid, but 3/4ths of the song are completely different, even though they share some lyrics. Baba O'Reily and Teenage Wasteland are two related, yet distinctly different, songs.
majere723 1 year ago
@reargef however, the chord progression is totally different. Take some music theory before you say they are that similar

@reargef The problem with this is that it SUCKS!!!!!! I love the WHO but this SUCKS!!!!!
tmawl 1 year ago
@tmawl Then go and listen to The Who because this is Pete Townshend. Mull of Kintyre wasn't a Beatles song... if you know what I mean.
Matinee909 1 year ago
@Matinee909 Hey guess what, this song SUCKS, yes it totally Sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is Pete having a Sting moment???? Some people just don't get it and the try so hard to reinvent themselves and that is what Pete is so desperately trying to do here. Some times it requires the sum of all the parts to be great. Are you listening Pete?
tmawl 1 year ago
@tmawl Maybe the guy loves music... If he creates music take it or leave it. Don't waste your time telling everyone 'it sucks'. You do know that half the band have passed away? Do you expect the rest of them to lay down their instruments? The fact that you compare a famous band member going solo to Sting tells me your experience of music is limited; hundreds of artists have done it, Sting wasn't the first and he isn't the most notable. Plus it's a bad example, Pete ain't being political.
Matinee909 1 year ago
@Matinee909 No I didn't know that, thanks for sharing it with me you dumb ass. Here is what I absolutely do know, I have forgotten more about music and the history of music then you will ever acquired in a life time. Your right, it was a bad comparison because Sting was the lead man in the Police and his solo career was a success and Pete...well we know all about his solo career. I know Roger and I know what a douchebag Pete was, spare me your bullshit, you havent a clue.
tmawl 1 year ago
@tmawl When I comment on your knowledge of music I base it on the stupidity expressed in your comments. For all you can possibly know I may be an expert on music in comparison. I've played bass, guitar and drums for 14 years, I have music and music tech A levels, an English degree in which I did two 40,000 word dissertations on song writing (not to mention other course work). Plus I love music more than most. When you tell me I know nothing when you have no evidence, you just look stupid.
Matinee909 1 year ago
@Matinee909 Why are you calling me a dumbass for asking you if you know half the band have died? It was your 'sum of all parts' comment that made me ask the question, you were chatting as if Pete should stick to playing with The Who... but as I have taught you, half of them have died so that isn't a possibility. And you, who claims to be such an expert, thinks that Pete should not persue a solo career... If you really loved music you wouldn't be saying that.
Matinee909 1 year ago
@Matinee909 When I tell you "I have forgotten more about music and the history of music then you will ever acquired in a life time," it is because of your obvious insecurities and desire to impress people with your musical what? Career? Get over your self, I blow harp, I play and sing and I perform when ever I can. It is not my life but I thoroughly enjoy all music. I give two shits about you and your passion for music, you think that your unique... i am done with you child.
tmawl 1 year ago
@tmawl Talking of insecurities; I never said I had a 'musical career', I simply said I play various instruments and have studied music. If you equate that to 'bragging about a musical career' then it's logical to think that your experience of any music scene is non-existant. I do actually earn money from music but so do about 30-40 people in my hometown, it's no big deal and it adds to my wage as a temp. My point was that you know nothing about me so can not question my knowledge of music.
Matinee909 1 year ago
@tmawl Besides, you bragged about your 'forgetfulness' BEFORE I gave you my musical credentials, so how the fuck was it a response to my 'obvious insecurities and desire to impress people'? You proved that you spout nonsense without knowing what you are talking about. Your homepage says '31' but your use of language demonstrates you are more like 15/16. You certainly come across as younger than my 23 years... 'child'.
Matinee909 1 year ago
@reargef It's a totally different song, it's rythmically and melodically totally different from Baba O'Riley, plus there are a lot more lyrics, these 2 can hardly be considered the same song. This is Teenage Wasteland and the song on Who's Next is Baba O'Riley. Only an idiot could consider these 2 the same song just because some of the the parts match. If Pete Townshend says this song is Teenage Wasteland, then this is not Baba O'Riley.

This is not Baba O'Riley guys. Townshed worked on Baba O'Riley and provided the "early electronic music experimentation" (Wikipedia). So he has partial rights to the lyrics and tune. But he decided to create his own song by adding lyrics to it.
