Ah, The memories! I used to watch this movie over and over again when I was little. But this scene did not scare me for some reason. I think that it did, though, bring in an irrational fear of clowns for me from that day onward, and clowns still freak me out to this day! I just found this movie at my local HMV store for $5.00, so I bought it! I'm so excited! I can't wait to watch it!
A horned clown that whispers "run" and then kills the main character in a tub of water as the kid he is searching for is dragged away by living smoke.
During production, producer Donald Kushner thought that this scene should be cut from the final film, because of the clown being extremely frightening to younger children. But for unknown reasons, it was left in the film.
The clown isn't the scariest part for me, not even was I was little. It's the smoke coming out the toaster as the kid eats bread, the clown throwing FORKS and the bathtub scene. Dear lord, how many references to death did this movie have. I never got most of the references, but watching it now freaks me out.
WHY A CLOWN, that's my question. I remember this now watching the clip...I think I blocked it out from my mind... "run..." hell of quote for a scary clown to say 0_o
as a kid I always loved firefighters. I also loved McDonalds. the crackling fire sounds make it all the more relaxing. I liked the bright colors and overall this clown made me hungry.
I don't remember much of watching this movie before, like, ten years ago, but I remember the feeling I had throughout it: Fear. There was nothing else to watch, nothing else to do, I was in someone's attic, I forget who's, and I watched this, and now I no longer wonder where my fear of clowns came from.
this never bothered me as a kid. mostly because it was such an obviously fake dream. now that stupid AIR conitioner had me running out of my room screaming! and speaking of nostalgia critic, that willy wonka tunnel scene also had me crying and screaming. ive noticed someting they have in common. they SCREAM at you out of ANGER. they become so angry, their voices become distorted and its almost shocking to hear.
Still scares the crap out of me. Thanks to this and Pennywise from IT - I HATE CLOWNS! What I say next might sound strange, but just go with me okay? I don't own a toaster for fear of it catching fire and bringing a horrific clown with it! I don't walk on, by or look down at sewer drains for fear of seeing Pennywise in it! I do realize that this sounds crazy but yes all true. CLOWNS scare the shit out of me, always have and probably always will!
I think UK TV airings of this movie cut the dream sequence after the door slams, thinking the second half would be way too scary for children. I'm not scared of clowns, but this one is freaky...
I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume the clown actually represents Ronald Mc.Donald and the whole scene is actually a Jungian representation of the little toasters repressed feelings of abandonment toward his former owner, the smoke is guild over past malfunctions, and the clown in yellow is his loathing of the fast-food industry that drove him away, all nicely topped-off with thoughts of suicide as depicted by the bath
No matter how much you love your toaster, NEVER take a bath with it
This is a dream that represents all of his fear of harming/killing people accidently, setting on fire and burning the house with the kid in it, the fork that the kid could stick in him and shock him, and the toaster falling into the water or in a more realistic situation, the sink.
@MissBakaArtist No, don't say that! It's a fantastic movie! It's classic! I used to watch it over and over and over as a kid. Except I fast-forwarded this part because it scared me. LOL.
This scene had a very Stephen King feel about it, the boy looking at his reflection, the smoke dragging him out of the room, the widening and change of the geometry of the room and the coup de grace: the clown.
@phinbella4eva Wow, now that you mention it I can't believe I didn't notice it. I guess you have to have a triangular shaped head to pull off the outfit.
@bluewulv The clown is supposed to be a firefighter, but the dream is supposed to be traumatic. I don't think a regular fireman would have been scary.
Seriously this is the #1 scariest nostalgic moment, Nostalgia critic. Screw the Banshee, Willy Wonka's Demon Tunnel, and Poltergiest's clown doll. This is legit nightmare fuel.
@looney1023 Too bad NC just posted that this is one of the movies he doesn't plan to review. I wonder if this doesn't have something to do with that decision.
@MrMusicstone You shouldn't say stuff like that, because that is actually the main reason Disney won't put out any more good movies like this one. All their stuff nowadays is happy stupid crap with no life lessons.
@MrMusicstone I recently watched The Fox and the Hound vs. The Fox and the Hound II, and I was astounded at the lack of emotion and thought in the sequel as compared to the original. Movies can't be ENTIRELY happy, because life is not entirely happy. The old Disney movies teach kids how to deal with ALL their feelings, and how to get through tough spots in life. That's where actual meaning comes from. New Disney is completely devoid of meaning. That's what's wrong with it.
Sadly this is not the most disturbing part of the movie, I just watched it and MY GOD! This is one of the most psychological movies I have ever seen and it's a kids movie. The most depressing part I think is either the flower dying alone, or the junkyard scene with the cars singing about their lives before they are crushed.
Oh god, I remember everytime I would watch this movie, I will always end up crying because the flower was longing for a friend & suddenly it got its heart torn apart & slowly started dying....
Damn, Im crying right now! The feeling came back, and honestly I love subliminal messages like these and the whole psychology behind it but why did, did a 5 year old me, cry when I would rewatch this part? Children dont really have fully developed minds but it always pained me to watch it
"The Evil Wicked Firefighting Clown's Face Looks More Like The Radical Alternative Of Gwynplaine's Face, The Joker's Face, The Disney Villains' Faces, The Pixar Villains' Faces, The Blue Meanies' Faces, Dr. Maxwell Payne's Face And The Clown With The Tear-Away Face's Face!"
I am not a very easily scared person when it comes to movies. I honestly can't remember the last time a horror movie really got to me. But when that clown leaned in and hissed that smoky "Run"... holy piss. I'm thoroughly convinced that the scariest things I've ever seen in cinema were all viewed in my childhood. 0___0
HOW could Nostalgia Critic leave this off of his scariest list(s)? Seriously, I'd better see a review of this movie before 2012 or someone is getting an angry email
I finally get it now, the forks are like when you put metal objects in the top of a toaster causing an electric shock. I never really understood is when I was a kid.
it's because of awesome movies like this that i'm not a crying, spoiled, whiny brat that's scared of everything. this generation of kids are being fed nonsense and are going to grow up to be uptight morons.
When I was a kid my mom used to make me turn my eyes away and fast forward through this part lol It wasn't until years later that I actually saw this part and understood why she did that. This whole scene is surprisingly dark and quite disturbing for a kids movie.

Why did they put this in a Kid's movie? It doesn't even have shit to do with the plot! It's just a scary scene for the sake of traumatizing me! Sadistic bastards! This and that damn air conditioner dying scarred me for life.
@subata45 It is my contention that the toasters nightmare didn't need to be seen. At the very least they could of chose something more tame so the toaster's nightmare didn't become MY nightmare too! That and toasters should be afraid of water, you ever try dunking your toaster in water? Doesn't work out well.
I first saw this demon clown when I was eight-year-old, and I have hated clowns ever since. And I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that my older siblings wanted to watch it again.
I'm sorry, but whoever decided that the demonic clown/fireman should lean down and whisper "Run!" as smoke escapes from his clenched, smiling teeth is a master of horror on par with Wes Craven or John Carpenter.
its been so long since i seen this movie this scene made me traumtzed when i was little they dont make cartoons lke they used to. It was like yesterday when i used vhs tapes to make a set up of dominonos and a tower of vhs tapes then knock them over. Now that was a video format u could play with :p not like DVDs or Downloaded media >:(

@Wes919 But don't you agree that there's nothing better than being thraumatized a bit as a kid? Thraumatization builds character y'know!

I first saw this demon clown when I was eight-year-old, and I have hated clowns ever since. And I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that my older siblings wanted to watch it again.

Wow. Holy hell. How was I not shitting my pants as a kid while watching this? Seriously, I can't even look at that clown now and not grimace.

Why am I different? This didn't give me terror as a child.
Nor did many of the other things when I WAS JUST A BABY FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! Must be my demented sense of humor... Ehehe.

jesus, did I block that clown from my memory?
TwlightPixie 7 months ago
I'm sorry, but whoever decided that the demonic clown/fireman should lean down and whisper "Run!" as smoke escapes from his clenched, smiling teeth is a master of horror on par with Wes Craven or John Carpenter.

Why the hell wasn't I scared fricking shitless at that clown as a kid?
