It's the equivalent of hitting a wall at 80km/hr. I used to think you added them up, but it doesn't work like that.

Just by way of comparision (just to illustrate why midwest USA doesn't understand filtering) I saw a couple of bike riders sitting in a traffic jam on the highway yesterday. The backup went for miles, and these guys just stopped with the traffic and sat it out. Saw another guy on a bike by himself doing the same thing in a different traffic jam. I guess around here it really isn't considered legal or an alternative, It really didn't look unusual, seemed normal.
I have worse, my dad when he was 28 was going 120 mph on a sports bike and he hit into the back of a car and went flying in the air. His leg was torn up and he had to get 140 staples in his leg. He had to use crutches for 2 years. Now his leg is messed up but he can still walk fine. He says that he cant feel if anyone touches his leg.

if two vehicles hit head on going 50mph each (just an example) it does not equate to a 100mph single vehicle crash into a surface. it's just like one vehicle hitting a solid surface at 50mph. knowledge taken from watching mythbusters.
Try math 101, 50 mph into a brick wall is 50 mph. But two vehicles, each doing 50 mph hit head on, you have 100 mph collision, 50 mph from each direction. Law of physics, larger vehicles less damage vs a vehicle less than 1/5th weight, total wipe out.
But the reason he got mad is because the car litterally cut him off. He could have taken him out and made him crash. What he is doing is just passing people on the side of the road, which is legal where he lives. It is proven by doing that they can reduce traffic by a lot.

if two vehicles hit head on going 50mph each (just an example) it does not equate to a 100mph single vehicle crash into a surface. it's just like one vehicle hitting a solid surface at 50mph. knowledge taken from watching mythbusters.

Try math 101, 50 mph into a brick wall is 50 mph. But two vehicles, each doing 50 mph hit head on, you have 100 mph collision, 50 mph from each direction. Law of physics, larger vehicles less damage vs a vehicle less than 1/5th weight, total wipe out.

But the reason he got mad is because the car litterally cut him off. He could have taken him out and made him crash. What he is doing is just passing people on the side of the road, which is legal where he lives. It is proven by doing that they can reduce traffic by a lot.

@JonO387 If a bike passes by a car, that's called "filtering" and it's legal. And when a biker filters is the biker endangering the car driver's life? Obviously not. But when a biker is riding along and a few thousand pounds of metal pull up a few inches beside him.....well then...that's obviously a different matter.

So of course I can complain when a car next to me is doing something ILLEGAL. Sigh....do you want me to explain it again for you? Motorcyclists as a class are famous for speeding, for passing on curves and on shoulders, and for creating mayhem on the road. Of course, I know you never break the law because it's illegal and because you are a teacher. Get real---since when do motorcycles do or not do things depending on the law?

@13mordeth - "Filtering" is not legal everywhere - maybe it is in your country or jurisdiction, but not everywhere. I believe trying to CAPSLOCK a response to someone you consider slow is not only impolite, but just goes to show that you do not understand the nature of the earlier response or question. I used to be a teacher for 20 years and have come to realize that there are no slow students, just poor, impatient teachers.

I ride and live in Canada and in my province lane splitting is not legal,however i do know what it feels like when a non-rider wants your space. Simple fact for riding ( In Canada anyway) Stay left-center and most dominent position in your lane and demand that space, if you let your guard down for half a second a non-rider will take advantage of it. Ride smart and stay safe!

You also should learn about kenetic energy, that's the enery that is transfered to a stationary object when it hits another, speed and weight play a big run in measuring it. If a train doing 120kmph properly weighted down hits another stationary train the kenetic energy generated would be the same if the 120kmph was doing 240kmph. It's good to hear your friend lived.
