  • The great Mike Boone on bass

  • That little old jew boy plays the snappiest traps on the block, the zip code — the whole planet. What a beautiful groove: He makes that ride cymbal sing!!! What talent...

  • Barry Keiner only had a few months to live after this. Weird. Sad. Great player. Heroin OD.

  • These are unusual drums for Buddy. That's a larger ride cymbal than he usually used, and the hi-hats sound quite different from his usual. Perhaps he borrowed the kit from the house drummer that night.

  • Buddy could swing like an elephants cock!

  • @suiteepee1 FOR ME TO POOP ON!!!!

  • @suiteepee1 hahahahahahahaha

  • Best thing about this video for me is how happy he looks & then how fantastic he sounds. How fantastic everybody sounds. I think he started to jump - like he was going to take a hop - for joy right at the end as he was walking off stage. Can hardly believe how perfect he was playing in 1985. Perfection. I lived in LA & when I heard on the news that he was in the UCLA hospital I was compelled to go & leave a Get Well card for him & wrote 'You're the best drummer who's ever.' Its still true.

  • It's a nice break and very instructive to see Buddy in a small combo. Love the way he swings this. Nice and easy and moving it.

  • folks just enjoy the music

  • travis barker sucks... im here for Buddy...

  • check out a modern drummer called travis barker he is 1 of the fucking best jazz drummers of the fucking world now

  • @4against1 Calling Travis Barker one of the best jazz drummers in world only shows that your head is so far up your ass that you probably look like a walking doughnut. Travis plays well for his style of music, but it sure as heck can't be classified as jazz. Buddy, on the other hand, was a jazz giant.

  • This must have been after his gig at the Great American Music Hall (or before?). I saw that band with Don Menza guest playing on alto (no solos). Was anyone else there? My friend took photos but I haven't seen him in 20 years. Gabe, you out there?

  • Bill Clinton on sax back when he wasn't inhaling.

  • Yamaha Drums?

  • I have heard that Buddy sometimes played in other styles, especially later in life - has anyone seen any vids on youtube of him playing anything other than swing?

  • @SAHBfan Check out the video on YT titled "Beulah Witch".

It's one of the many rock charts Buddy had in his book ~

  • YOUR ALL RIGHT HOWEVER BUDDY WAS MY BEST FRIEND AND HOWEVER YOU LOOK AT IT HE WAS THE BEST PHIL AMBROS SEE THE DRUM SET SINATRA AND BUDDY GAVE PHIL ON YOUTUBE SINATRA AND PHIL AMBROS YES PLAY THE WAY YOU WANT BUT BUDDY CAN BE THE START I KNOW HE WAS MY TEACHER

  • @MrDrumsPhilAmbros That literally made no sense. At all.

  • @MrDrumsPhilAmbros Ummmmm???? what???

  • Just think, every person there. Except for Buddy of course. Was a total fuckin loser all through school.

  • wow I am youyng and I almost dropped my pizza box -.............don't even know what to say literrally speachless

  • The most accomplished Jazz drummer in the history of the instrument...Tony Williams.

  • @pooperscoopr69 Well, Tony Williams is my absolute personal favorite, too. But why bother mentioning that on this particular video. Buddy Rich was a great, great, great drummer, too, and seminal in the history of the instrument. Plus, he was a great, great drummer (did I mention that?)

  • I'm digging Buddy's ride cymbal...this is not his usual sound

  • lo at 2'34 the sax dude with the jew fro looks back at the fucking slob on the drums like what the fuck you just cut off my fucking solo lol

  • @travisBrulzz Nah Steve Marcus aint like that!

  • OK. There is not enough good quality videos of Buddy and other greats on youtube. I can handle the visual quality being sub par but please people put some time into uploading actual quality tracks that justify their artists. This one isn't bad. sounds better than most.

  • Saw Buddy in 1987 for the first and only time and all I could do was laugh in amazement. I'd never seen anyone with such command of the instrument before.... or since.

  • Steve Marcus, great sax!!

  • Buddy's performance is great, as always. Liked the toms and bass drum, but his traditional snare sounded crisper, nicer. Maybe just the recording equipment or quality. Wonderful, wonderful piano solo!

    Thanks for uploading insanescott.

    Larry, Taiwan

  • This guy is just unbelievable.

  • The amazing late Barry Kiener on piano! He died shortly after this footage while on tour with Buddy. He first played with BR at 18 years old in the late 70s.

And about Buddy playing Yamaha drums here; These drums are of course supplied for this TV appearance. Buddy´s drums were most likely on the tour bus. He didnt have a drum endorsement for the last 5 years of his life. He played a restored 40´s SLingerland Radio King kit.

  • That little punk Travis likes to get on here and post under fake names. You're not fooling anyone Travis,,,,,you little punk

  • i loved the parts inbetween 0:00 and 4:21

  • Man this little jewboy swings like godamn muthfucka - what talent!!! he really is the world's greatest ever drummer. A born natural.

Love the secret tape of him chewing out his bassist for bending notes instead of playing a walking bassline. Even though he could be a bad tempered little sod, I'm with him 100% about the bassist bending notes instead of grooving...

  • When I was a kid living in California I saw him perform live many times at Disneyland. He was the greatest inspiration. We still love you Buddy. Check out my tributes to him on here (a few short drum solos of mine). To all the rock drummers out there, don’t lose touch with the past. There are many things to learn from the rich heritage all those jazz drummers left us “back in the day”. Richard Gray

  • Its weird in some strange way seeing Buddy playing a Yamaha Recording Custom.

  • @RacManRhythm I agree, but drummers will use the drums of whatever company pays the most and gives the most free stuff. Heck, look at all the drums Taylor Hawkins has used over the years... Tama, Gretsch, Ludwig, and even Slingerland, I think.

  • @MrTamaguy Yes, you're right about Hawkins constantly changing drum companies. I think the only major brands I haven't seen him playing (yet) are Pearl and Yamaha. He had Slingerlands back when he toured with Alanis.

  • Steve Whokus????.....

  • It's so wired to see Buddy behind a black Yamaha recording custom kit.

    Boss playing as always.

  • el mejor todo un energumeno en la musica y bateria maestro buddy rich

  • Steve Marcus was one of the great tenor players and he's missed!

  • Barry Kiener on piano and Mike Boone on bass.

  • The annoying when guitarist player of this caliber hurrying....

Buddy Rich always heard kind of things, thats why his band was perfect. Kind of mistaks like here was not in his band.

  • those are cb drums.

  • @asqrss3233 They look like Yamaha Recording Customs to me.

  • Buddy Rich was the best!

    Search youtube-

Buddy Rich Chews Out His Band

Buddy (Rich) Flies Off The Handle

  • Man it's so annoying when morons start critiquing players of this caliber.

  • @EliotKrupa

    The guitarist is hurryiyng.

    Even morons can hear that.

I' can see he plays very well, but hurrying.

    What's right is right.

  • @Casino818 actually, playing as both a bass player and a jazz guitar player, i can say from experience that the job of the bass is to be on the front of the beat, so that it almost feels like it's rushing, and the drums are supposed to lay back, and that is what creates the swing. It may seem like rushing to some, but that is how its played stylistically.

  • @SovietSeattle i took a rhythm section workshop with mike boone, the bassist in this video, and he emphasized that the drummer play on top of the beat, and the bassist lay back a little from where the drummer is

  • @EliotKrupa

But if you go to learn in a music school you will know what i mean, moron.

  • @EliotKrupa Yeah also, who cares if your not the fastest or most technical! as long as you stay in time , keep a beat and have fun it doesn't matter.

  • @EliotKrupa Why? Is he perfect? Is he impervious to critique? No. Not at all.

  • Just one mistake, the bass guitarist is hurrying...The truth i never seen before this guitarist...Butt he's hurrying.

  • listen to buddy's ride though, they're right up to speed with each other. buddy plays ahead too

  • Steve Marcus is one of the best saxophone players we have!

  • Every one of these guys is amazing!

  • Buddy Rich's favourite food was chicken. Especially the drumstick.

  • Amazing NO one commented on Barry Kiener. He was an awesome pianist in his day. He died way too young.

  • Steve Marcus ....Bravissimo

  • y....mascando chiclce este hombre,,fue lo maximo..the best drummer ever...r.i.p.

  • holy crap is Buddy playin Yamaha Rec. Customs? Er...well...9000's

  • He's 67 in this video.

  • Buddy chewing gum during the show? I guess he yelled at himself on the bus.... ;-)

One guy one got a lashing for letting his sideburns grow too long. I love Buddy

  • you are right FKsaxman, Steve Marcus was great, yet unknown. He did some amazing fusion stuff with Larry Coryell.

He really showed soul & speed on some amazing standards with Bill Evans & Stern. Etc. He was my favorite Saxman.

  • When you can play...you can play... regardless of the setting Trio - Big Band.

All of Buddy's Tenor Men are/ were hot Ernie Watts comes to mind..

Steve Marcus is waaaayyyy underatted though...

  • Buddy on a Yamaha kit??? That ain't right!!!

  • yeah but its a 9000 so we can let him off!

  • Notice the Gaffer tape over the badge?

  • Hell, I've seen BR playing Pearls before.

  • can i just make an observation on how amazing steve marcus was, and how no one know who he is nowadays?

  • your right Cornishminer...Barry was awesome..course all of Buddies players were some of the best players around at any time...he accepted nothing less then 110%.Those of us who saw his band ,were always amazed at the talent that band had..the swing that swung so hard and fast was a mind-blowing sensation .Yes,J Jones, all the other greats were awesome also...Buddy took all that to a higher level is all..some one HAS to be more gifted across the board of drumming...and Buddy had that honor .

  • Barry Kiener was a superb pianist. Hardly ever mentioned, he played in the shadows of many of the greats.

  • Oh, and smooth jazz sucks, and it ain't jazz. THIS is jazz.

  • Jazz is so awesome. It's too bad this genre is dying.

  • He's great

  • :O black drum kit :O

  • jo jones dude!, jo jones is the man.

Buddy is a giant, but jo jones...uff it´s imposible to have that swing he develops.

  • Develop your own style, and instead of wasting your time arguing over who's better, pick up your sticks and PRACTICE! Then maybe someday, other drummers will be arguing about you!

  • To the young/beginner drummers: It's not about being 'the best' or who's better than who...there are as many opinions as there are drummers. Buddy was the best ever - but even he acknowledged that you need to listen to and learn from a lot of different drummers. Good drummers. Rock, Jazz, Latin, Reggae...listen to the top drummers in all genres of music and LEARN something.

  • lol, you got tht off the vic firth video podcast!!!

  • I have a theory that "scopions84" is actually a group of Harvard undergrads having fun, being ironic, trying to impersonate a moron. This is a joke, people! Nobody could be this stupid.

  • indeed he was....

  • buddy rich is very very good and fast to be old.

  • To the dumb moron that said that the great Steve Marcus should pay more attention to Buddy: You should know that Marcus is part of the small percenatge or other instrumentalists that Buddy respected. He played with Buddy for 12 years in his lead tenor spot and eventually Buddy introduced his band as the Buddy Rich Band Featuring Steve Marcus. He kept him because "No Clams" according to Buddy himself. Long story short shut the fuck up and learn the story before you dis one of the greats!

  • what is this tune?

  • My Shining Hour ~

  • and b.t.w....that is swingin as all get out!!!!

  • to everyone wondering..

there is some kid who just comes to these vids to rile everyone up about "Travis Barker this" "Travis Barker that...lets not give him the time it takes us to respond to his idiotic and insulting brain droppings.....we all know Buddy is King....thats an easy one..

  • god the piano player is just smoking! Amazing playing on this video!

  • Barry Kiener was a huge talent who died young the following year.

  • travis barker is gay. that's all there is to it. he is an actual homosexual.

  • false. I like Travis Barker, but I'll agree, he is on no level comparable to Buddy Rich.

  • Gay? So what? You are an actual moron.

  • travis barker- was it the trousers? perhaps

  • woow too much beef over travis and buddy. just enjoy the video!! there's no need for anything else. by the way if you like this quartet, check out the dave brubeck quartet - in sound of the loop you get to witness morello's mastery

  • Now that was some sweet music right there. Thanks to youtube over this last week, I'm really learning about how amazing Buddy really was/is. That was a fun piece with lots of nice playing from all soloists that participated.

  • this is for pinatafighter, i totaly agree with your comment about buddy, but to put neal peart in the same class as buddy, are you serious? he is not even close.

  • Forgive my language but, What's his name? Trovis Bunker? is nothing more than a 10 dollar drum machine with tattoos and piercings..I've heard children play better..History will never forget Buddy Rich,It'll never remember Trevis Bender. Flavour of the month, and 3 years out of date. When you get hair on your balls, and realise metal through your nose isn't as cool as your friend told you it was,you may get tired of listening to first page drum book drumming and get into real music...

  • No need to get angry about Trevor Baxter (real name), he's a fine chap, just can't play them drums like Buddy could. And he shouldn't feel bad about it.

  • Dude travisbulzz ur a fucking prik and learn how to spell shit man ur a fucking dumb ass u can burn in hell u little fuckface.

  • ahahaha...travis better than buddy rich?? are you insane retard?

  • gotta hand it to the old farts...........rich roach and krupa were the origianals

  • does anyone knows what kind of snare his he using?

  • Only one word needed...OUTSTANDING!!

  • what the fuck u just called one of the best drummers in the world a old fart u no he is dead now and let me correct u domzdrumz he is not 1/4 hell he isnt 1/300000000

  • Hey everyone, this travisbrulzz dude thinks travis barker is a better drummer than buddy rich...barker is not even a 1/4 as good as buddy.....travisbrulzz, why don't you go watch your barker videos and shut the fuck up!

  • You are truly the world's most ungrateful Fuck. Obviosly you know nothing of drums or music or really life. You are a fucking tard. Barker is just another face in the crowd compared to buddy. Barker will be forgotten. Soon. Rich and Peart are the two greatest drummers of all time. Go fuck yourself with a tattoed pierced barkfuck drumstick.

  • whats with all the hype for travis barker?

  • sais the guy who spells would as wood.

  • i have no clue i seriously think hes terrible he does the same beats all the time theres no way you could comapre him to buddy or the greats. i bet jack whites wife could beat him in a drum off anyway

  • his playing reminds me of dennis chambers. especially with that gum.

  • In this performance it seems to me as if Buddy Rich is proud of his band. I'm sure some of you cats must notice the cool satisfaction on display as these guys smoke this number. Buddy is the best.....period.

  • Why do I keep seeing Travis Barker comments on Buddy Rich videos? Are you kidding me? I've watch his "solos" and they're like a minute long and nothing but beats. They guy is lame! BR was the king...and..Long live the king!

  • I thought the same thing. Why does everybody bring up Travis barker in Buddy Rich videos. It's the same with why does everybody bring up BONHAM when your watching a video of IAN PAICE.

  • Ya gotta love someone comparing Travis Barker to Buddy Rich.....hilarious.

  • your right no comerison dickhead travis would deuche all over budy ritch I would not insult travis by comparing his to this fag dumbass

  • You're so stupid. Learn how to spell, idiot.

  • I would love to see joey jordison clean the stage with that crap drummer man

  • Y ou young guys need to show some respect.its buddy in his later years.I do not know what kind of drums hes playing here.its not a slingerland kit.....

  • T barker would pwn that ass on the drums

  • who the fuck is T barker??!!

  • travis barker tard

  • You're comparing that tattooed spoiled fucking brat to a drumming legend?? You brain dead, glass dick sucking crack head.

Don't even mention that idiot in the same sentence as Buddy Rich.

  • exactly! Buddy Rich is Buddy Rich, the legend!

  • He chewing tabacco or something? Just curious.

  • gum fool

  • Can't be so sure :)

  • that dude with the afro blowing the szoyfone shood have stuck that motherfuker up the tard on the drums ass for busting in on his groove with that shit solo , fucking dumbass

  • Anyone who is an experienced Jazz Musician knows that these were not mistakes. These things happen all the time, but especially in a small group situation like this.

It's part of the improvisational nature of Jazz.

    Case closed ~

  • was the mix up at (2:31) Steve Marcus'(sax) mistake or Buddy's. anyone here know?

  • Glad to be able to say: no "mix up" at all - just Buddy deciding he'll take the "bridge" of the song as an 8 bar break at that point (a typical choice), and, with his eyes closed, Steve Marcus not realising quite as quickly as the others, and therefore we hear him momentarily proceed with the melody of the bridge. Definitley not something that could be labeled a mistake, just a little incident along the way... and a spontaeneous thing anyway. I like it! RED.

  • lol RED. one man's "little incident" is another man's mistake. Are you a former band member? (fess up)

    what about 2:58?

  • No, honest! And 2:58, the leader just took the executive decision that there'd be another drum break at that point (certainly observing the 8 bar phrase patterns) - and it's not like there was any arrangement here: they just counted this one off and played, so I'd still strenously deny anything approaching a "mistake" occurs here... Actually I like it all the more: spontaneous is best! RED.

PS.:at that first 2:31 listen to how Marcus is about to essay the bridge, but so what!

  • well, i appreciate your opinion on it.

  • If you look at 2:29 you can here Buddy shout. "Shut up it´s my turn to play". Buddy is the leader here and the saxophonist should pay more attention to how he plays or shouts. It´s good music anyway.

  • Steve Marcus was the man

  • Steve Marcus RIP

  • Buddy Rich is epic win. Greatest drummer imo.

  • The KING!!!

  • travis barker sucks an so does blink 182, I was upset hen h didnt burn in that plane crash...

  • Travis didnt impress me!

  • I often wonder if B was alive today, would he be playing modern equipment and a set of DW drums ?? Boom stands, two bass drum pedals and whatever Peart uses ?? NEVER !!

  • Travis Barker ? You must just be trying to ruffle someone feathers.. Travis himself would tell you that he isnt even in the same league as Buddy.. Just about any pro drummer in the world would say the same.... Travis Barker couldnt play jazz if his life depended on it.

  • he couldn't play DRUMS if his life depended on it haha

  • quit talking shit about god

    PUSSY

  • You guys want to see two fine musicians chewing the daylights out of their gum while they perform, type in "Californiajammer1974", then click on Emerson,Lake and Palmer. Both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake are both chewing gum--and hard! Take special note of Karn Evil 9 1st Impression part 2, and watch enjoy the drum solo on that 1.5 ton custom made stainless steel drum set.

  • I have been playing for 42 years, and, I still chew gum. It does relax you, and, I find myself gritting my teeth if I do not chew gum. I don't chomp on it while I am playing, it's just there, sort of like a cushion 'tween the teeth.

To me, what looks "bad" is guys drinking beer and smoking on stage.

  • I met Buddy in 1937. We remained close friends until his death. Since I was a drummer, I also knew Gene, Buddy, Louie, Jo and all the other guys playing in the 30's,40's, and beyond. Almost all of us chewed gum while playing, because if you're chewing your relaxed. Incidentally, I have seen Louie chew gum in concert situations many times. If you pay too much attention to the gum chewing, you'll miss all the marvelous drumming! :)

  • Buddy could be chewing gum, drinking a beer and feeding his goldfish and still outplay, outswing, and outclass everyone in the room! Those look like rented drums... thanks for posting!!!!!

  • Exactly. It does not matter what he is doing on the side or in his mouth. He still would play fantastic drums. And YES, he still plays. Many of today's drummers measure there skill by watching him. And even when he got older, his speed and technique out did many of the younger drummers. It is a matter of taste and musicality. What he did in his personal life might not have been the right thing to do, but that was irrelevent to most of us who were more interested in his skill with drums.

  • First of all, enlighten me, who is Travis Barker and what does he do with wood and how does he cook his beet? Hmm, something wrong with being a stepchild? Oh well, don't see what being a stepchild has to do with how someone plays the drums or any other musical instrument, but I guess Travis will enlighten us. And then we will all go home and turn on our CD players and listen to Buddy Rich.

  • You sure put me in my place. Sorry I am not as educated as you. Thanks for teaching me a lesson. I think I have had enough school for one week, I think I will go listen to Buddy play.

  • You must be about 13 or so, and an obvious product of American public schools and pop culture (do you know what that is, little man?).

Before you get all hurt, grow up and see that I'm being antagonistic. Look it up, if you don't know what it means.

T****s B****r doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same paragraph as Buddy Rich.

  • Notice how this guy can't spell,

    wow,

    you're a fag dude,

buddy rich is the best drum ever draw breath,

    if buddy was still alive,

and the two had a drum battle,

    barker would sponatneously combust.

  • travis barker is overrated
