Notice the nets are pulled out to the top of the crease in '96, and the nets are in the regular spot here. It makes a huge difference.

Pause at 00:14 You can see the nets from the Flashback are about 2-3 feet forward from where the nets are now days... Hence why the old school records where literally a full second faster! The time would normally be cut shorted as time goes on just because the weight of equipment gets more light weight over the years.

Some of these guys have really ugly strides. Granted they are NHL players and have superior speed to begin with but only Parise and Cogliano have good looking strides. Carter is practically standing upright which you are told from the beginning not to do.

Yes the nets were set in front of the goal line when Gartner set the record, but skate technology has evolved a lot since then so it should be about even.

Has it ever occurred to any of you that when Gartner set that record it was with the nets set in front of the crease on both ends of the ice, cutting down the circle the skater had to skate by several feet, thus lessening the skating distance and causing the 1 second faster speeds.

@chipayten Watch the Gartner video, only one net is taken off its proper place. Watch this video and you will see it is the exact same. The second net seen in the video isnt in the right spot, the end of the net is placed on the goal line. So both Gartner and everyone in this video had one net in the holes, and one not. They both skated on the goal line on their second net, so really there was no advantage to anyone.

Just watched Helm play an exhibition game at the MTS arena here in Winnipeg. He did a lap of the rink in a similar style skills competetion between periods and he skated 13.592. He's just so fast, tidy and long strides. The closest guy to him was a 14.5.
