okay so i live near a forest, well not really. I live in Grass valley, ca which has more trees than grass lol, and i got these cute critters going through my trash! raccoons too, but today,, a few mins ago, i heard scratching outside my door, it wasn't my cat, hes sleeping, so i opened it and this adorable smaller than a house cat sized opossum just looked me in the eye and waddled off. i caught him again five minutes later. he seems not to be afraid of humans.

That is an "Opossum". Possum and Opossums are quite different. Two totally different animals.

Oppossums must have scent glands on their cheeks. He's claiming that person as his because he likes them. He's probably licking because she smells so good he wants to taste her. I know that hedgehogs and guinea pigs scent mark and lick things that they think smell good and dogs roll in things they think smell good. It might be a common mammal behavior.

@crystyle You have a suitable habitate for it to live in, send into Fish and Wildlife that you have proof of said habitate, no record of animal cruelty against you, then just find a breeder to buy one from, we had to do the same thing when we got our pet skunk, I'm curently looking for a pet opossum myself.

I just found a baby possum on the side of the road. The mom was dead and so were all of the siblings. I've been looking online for a detailed diet sheet but can't find anything of value. I've raised countless baby squirrels to release and I want to help this little guy out. Can you please send me info about the formula you used and the diet Rocko gets? I'm feeding Esbilac puppy formula right now to my baby. Thank you!

They are wild animals, and very docile. They should not really be kept as pets unless the conditions are right. I mean.. if you live in an apartment. Wont work. If you live out in the country and you do not try to put them in a cage or pull thier tails, sure. They love cat food!

We should be very careful not to antropomorphize these smaller animals. They behave according to their species-specific instincts. It's def marking you, not expressing "love", as such concepts are for larger mammals.

I would assume they have scent marking glands behind their jaws like cats do. That's why cats rub the sides of their heads against their owners. It's a way of "marking their property". :-)

This is so so so adorable. My boyfriend said possums are scary-looking, they're terrifying, gross, etc. So I came on youtube to investigate his claims. He is blind. This is SO SO SO cute. It reminds me very much of my cats. But he (the boyfriend, not my cats) told me that possums only live like 3 years. Is this definitely true? Because that would break my heart. I've had my cats almost 12 years and I'm getting panicked if I even try to think about them passing on.

possums have special glands on their necks to mark their territory with. the chemical in them is similar to that of a skunk. ure either really retarted or u have a cold if u cant smell it.

I currently have a baby possum in my room that I saved from my dog. I'm not sure if it's old enough to take care of it's self yet, so i'm not sure what to do with it. But it's about the size of my hand and I'm pertty sure he would bite me if given the chance. But he's eating good, I just don't want to release it if it can't take care of it's self. Any ideas?

My adopted Chi mix did that when I first brought him home. He'd rub the side of his face on my shoes, dog toys etc. He still does that now but occasionally is all.
