Only novices think that spreading is a necessary component of good debating. I go as fast as I need to in order to fit the speech into the allotted time. I'm not the 1A, so I don't usually read speeches like this anyway, and it fits into eight minutes without having to spread. AND the evidence was powerful enough to win over 80% of my aff rounds. Why use speed and get it in in four minutes when you can read more comprehensibly and still within the allotted time?
No, I don't. If I can read a substantive, persuasive case within eight minutes while reading at a relatively slow pace, then there is no reason to do rapidfire.
I can enunciate when I want. I'm not the first speaker. I wrote this case, I don't read it in the actual debate. I take the most speakerpoints in most of my debates, I'm a much better speaker than this video would let on.
well my partner and I, Jfcamacho, have placed first at every local tournament that we've debated in and we have also qualified for NFL nationals defeating this nuclear in the final round of the qualifiers...oh yea did i mention that my partner got first speaker in the state championship and that i have won first speaker at multiple tournaments this year. We are both two year debaters going varsity.
Nuke has actually worked very, very well here. Although I've seen a million evidence packages online using Gen 4 reactors, no one (even at the State varsity level) seems to have heard of it. The strategy is to run this, casually mention that you incentivize Gen 4 reactors. When the neg runs their nuke DAs, just get up and break all their links by saying that they refer to Gen 2 reactors and we use Gen 4. It's worked 80% of the time.
The case is very wea in many aspects including T, K, CP, and solvency.
Obviously nuke is totally unT i mean even the framers of the resolution banned the use of nuclear energy as aff yet teams run it. So if u hav a framer as a judge and u run T-AE not Nuke ull probably win
and don't even get me started on K or CP or case
even Gen 4 don't solve, Gen 4 are 10 years from full perpetual solvency for readiation and meltdowns
I mean they still emit enough radiation to give cancer
Well, I'll just say that we've placed first or second in all but one of our local debate tournaments, and fourth in the state tournament with this case. Judges are supposed to go into the room tabula rosa.
What is your answer to the Russian Nuclear Waste CP?
And I recommend you guys add at least one more card for inherency and some more impact evidence for your Advs.
GW doesn't have a clear impact
And as previously talked about, the topicality that says you violate the resolution because according to the U.S. legal code nuclear isn't alternative can get a lot of crappy (including College and Coach) judges that don't fully understand standards. - Just make sure you have topicality blocked :)
I know I don't read fast. That annotation is written to some of the people unfamiliar with policy who constantly tell me to slow down. This is a moderately slow speed.
Don't worry, I'm totally aware of that. It's just that most people commenting here think that I'm speaking incredibly fast. Most people I debate speak at 10x this speed.
The stupid haircut is the only haircut possible. Second, if you had even done a cursory view of a few comment sections, you would know that I am an aromantic asexual.
Slow. Lacks passion. May be you're just doing it that way because you're not in round. Anyways, put your plan into planks. And nuclear is untopical as defined by the U.S. legal code.
On speed- Speed is something that some judges like, some tolerate, and some hate. We prefer a moderate speed unless we really need to speak fast.
On passion- I don't read the 1AC. I do the 2AC, which I do a bit better.
On topicality- I'm aware of that card, and use it when we run nuke as a counterplan in negative. But when we are aff, we do dispute that if someone brings it up, and we have various topicality cards on nuke being alternative.
dude you have like 2 more minutes in your 1AC i would totally bulk it up with some more sig harms evidence... i would definatley add one more in sig harms about the natural disasters and the exact ways that it is tied to global warming instead of just saying that it is. the neg could hit you in that area and say that its just some theories with no solid evidence of its tie to global warming... although now that i see the date of this video this might be irrelavent
Get your plan planks into your plan text. Although it's usually just assumed you never know when you'll run into a team that bitch slaps you for not claiming fiat, and having enforcement and administration.
Goddamn, that shit was so fun in highschool. My parent and I didn't care if we won rounds, all we ever did was write crazy kritiks and try and make our opponents cry.
Also fuck the police, and by police I mean lay judges.
I wouldnt support any mayor investments in such energy. Solar, wind & water seems to have a better future. Im unsure about the revenue though. But the development certainly needs more support.
Solar and wind hurt the environment more than they help. Too much land is taken up in windfarms where the land should be left to nature. Same with solar.
...the sea then?..like the northern European countries?
How about underground thermal cooling and heating of homes.....???
how about on top of homes???...they have already displaced nature so at least place solar on top of our houses.....check out the green homes in most of southern germany......free electricity baby!!!!!
Hm? Nuke plants take far less space than boutique fuels like wind and solar. As for the nuke waste, we would run cards that say G4 reactors solve waste. You also need to show why racism outweighs and show stats to prove your point.
Why are you addressing me like I'm making a serious argument in a lot of this? Some of this is valid, some is total crap. We were able to demonstrate in a round that price shocks cause nuclear war and the extinction of human life. It's called a kritik.
Nuclear is great. It is efficient and its only real downfall is its waste. Waste, just like the waste from coal and and other fossil fuels being burned. Well, who said we can't find something productive to do with nuclear wastes? We have harnessed the wind, sun and the atom already. Also, who says we have to bury it? Why can't we utilize some of this endless space around us and lauch it that direction, not into the ground?
wind solar ect have shown to be reliable sources of energy, but we should find ways to more efficiently harvest them, i think nuclear power would be a god transition between natural gases and greener sources of energy.
hmm. I'm still not totally with you on alternative energy, but IF we have to get alternative energy, nuclear is definitely the way to go. its almost unfathomable how other methods like wind or solar would be cheaper than nuclear
Wonderful. It is amazing how well put together you have made this video. Your argument is sound. It is great how you use jobs, the environment, and trying to kick our addiction to oil all in one argument.
The only thing I would say is that we cannot stop on just nuclear energy, we need solar and wind (where they can be satiable).
Good information but you speak way too quickly. Watch how Ken Miller speaks. Note how he not only speaks slowly, he enunciates his sentences to give emphasis to his talking points. Most of what you said becomes a blur of information and many people will not be able to follow it.
I think he's only speaking that quickly because that's how they do it in the actual debates... to get more points/fact/etc. in per minute. Correct me if I'm wrong Kabane52.
WHY are more people not aware of the necessity for and safety of nuclear power?
IS it the ignorance of the fear mongers regarding the facts surrounding safe nuclear power that keeps us nuclear free?
WHAT greater irony is there than the almost guaranteed accusation by the same fear mongers, of racism against arabs for eschewing the purchase of their oil for clean, safe, domestic nuclear power?
In my opinion the cost out ways most of the benefits. My local power company (Progress Energy) is building a new nuclear power plant in Levy County, FL. It is not expected to be completed for another 10 years.
In order to pay for this plant, Progress Energy has started to add a surcharge to their customers' power bills. (25% increase for residents, 40% increase for businesses) My power bill is now over $200 per month, no joke, when last year it was only around $130 a month.
With the economic mess right now and the huge up front cost. And also with the higher prices of electric cars. Purposing a huge increase in nuclear power production is risky.
"Far from breaking the bank, it will actually enrich the treasury. Money would flow into the [the United States] from all around the world, because they would be backed by physical plant and equipment producing the worlds most important commodity, power. Money flowing into the United States would stabilize the free-falling dollar. Interest rates would go down. This would make us all richer to boot, as the...
... stock market (in which most people have a substantial portion of their retirement savings), reacting to lower budget deficits, lower interest rates and energy security, would move higher in a sustainable way.
The power plant in Levy County is expected to cost between 10-15 billion dollars. That is for only one plant. Imagine if 10-20 nuclear power plants being built and financed at once. That is a lot money for the government (which is expected to have a 1.2 trillion dollar deficit next year) or any other for any other commercial enterprise. Keep in mind that Nuclear energy is not the only clean source of energy available for us.
Coal releases one hundred times as much radioactive material? I'd like to know where you got that from. You make a good case but wind, hydroelectric, and solar are cleaner. BTW what's the other team's position? Are they pro-coal?
okay this sounds really interesting to me. but why would using nuclear power reduce our dependence on foreign oil? our power is generated by coal, not oil, and coal is mined here in the US
