  • Dat abortion.

  • such a good song Hospice is my favorite album

  • pretty nice

  • decided to search around this YouTube channel after watching the sleepyhead music video; best decision I've made all week!

  • i would like to know how someone gets unfucked

  • @gmwphnehn

    Keep looking.

  • @gmwphnehn In most cases, it's not easy.

  • Sounds like Christmas-time.

  • This song is misleadingly upbeat. But I still love it.

  • tomorow i see in lux - lisnon - portugal

  • WoOw beautiful sonG

  • Corona Capital!!! wuu!!!

  • This is an emotional song..

  • peter, this is not very nice at all.

  • So Sylvia is pregnant, and obviously she can't keep the baby. If she did, she would have to live without morphine and any other medication or chemo for the next nine months. I don't think ANY mother is that committed.

  • @Mychro16 I would die for my kid, without even thinking about it. You underestimate the love of motherhood my friend, I think EVERY moher is that commited.

  • @Mychro16 and i dont think sylvia is her real name. Pretty sure that was a metaphor for a poet that committed suicide by sticking her head in an oven. while her kids were in the next room over. like Samson by Regina Spektor, if that helps any .__.

  • @Mychro16 Sylvia refers to Sylvia Plath who wrote beautifully heartbreaking poetry and literature often referring to her own depressed state before committing suicide, and the whole hospice/terminal illness is a metaphor for an abusive relationship i.e. he's the carer and this bitch is like a patient that he shouldn't take care of but feels obliged to and it all falls apart in the end. but whatever way you look at it it's still gut-wrenching stuff, fuckin love this album!

  • it's about an abortion

  • This song reminds me of my last night before I shipped off to boot camp back in 09. Last night in San Antonio with my childhood friends having the time of our lives at a minus the bear/ antlers show. Saying goodbye was so hard to everyone and this song kind of symbolizes my wild childhood ending and adult life beginning. gets me sad everytime.

  • among one of the saddest songs ever.

  • mmm giant chocolate maltball!

  • If I see one more facebook post quoting lyrics from this song I will kill somebody

  • @GrimInstincts a) They can't help how amazingly beautiful these lyrics are b) are you serious?!

  • @microwavableants No i am not :p

  • @GrimInstincts Dangit

  • The album's story isn't entirely true, because it is essentially a concept album. Peter Silberman has said very little about how much of the story is true. He has said that the album is an analogy for an emotionally abusive relationship. He hasn't elaborated much further than that. I doubt anyone actually died, I think that the death in the album is a metaphor for the end of his relationship. Of course I could be mistaken, but that was my interpretation.

  • @TheFightclub99 Peter has actually said (in an interview) that all of his songs are an autobiography.

  • video sucks compared to the song.

  • I think this is one of the best songs I have ever heard...

  • Haha I love how they help the poor girl get her ball back on the cart and then they just leave her to fail at pulling it up again :P

  • HAWAIIAN PARKOUR - MY CHANNEL

  • im gay hehehehe

  • I'm all for fashion in film clips, but I really don't think it's suited here. Like, the girl... too hot and with too much make up, it just doesn't look right.

    I think it's a bad film clip.

I love The Antlers' music though.

  • "Up next: The Gummy Bear Song".

    Really Youtube? REALLY?

  • Comment removed

  • who knew a song about abortion could be so pretty

  • amazing location

  • Wish people would just shut up and enjoy the music in the comment section.

  • i wish three 20 something hipsters dressed in fall colours would come and help me out when im in trouble ;_;

  • Some people cry over music too much. I get it, the sound releases an awesome emotional flow of chemicals a lot of us get goosebumps and a melancholic state from. But crying? That's something only a middle-class white teen with no troubles could do.

  • @saltesc Wow. Yet another ignorant person. I feel bad for you, i really do.

  • @BOOMDIGIDYable No you don't. Stop lying to yourself.

  • @saltesc Alright, i wont feel bad.

  • @saltesc

Humorous, but I respect your opinion.

  • @saltesc This is a very sad album. I'm guessing that you don't understand it because if you did you would be sad, maybe not full on crying but there is in fact some intense sadness in this song and album because of the meaning behind it. Plus, this album is an autobiography so yes the lead singer experienced all of this.

  • @sk8tslide It's not sad. That's a very shallow, narrow-minded, and borderline incorrect way to look at Hospice. There's only two or three tracks that could be regarded as distressing at best. Also, it's not an autobiography as far as we all know. Peter has never claimed that and it's as much a misconception as those who think the story is literal. But hey, we're Generation Y and this is 2011; bring out a concept album and you're bound to get some idiots.

  • @saltesc Let me start this off with this: This is not an attack.

Now, just wanna ask, how isn't it sad? Back up your claims. If I said "This ice is not cold." you'd want me to back it up. The album on its most shallow level is dealing with a dying woman in hospice care, and digging a bit deeper dealing with abuse between two people, to the extent this man is all but ecstatic, albeit conflicted, that she's dying. Again, not an attack, just would like to hear your take.

  • @DSHC224 The story is told metaphorically to describe a young and ill-fated relationship. For example, the songs Shiva and Wake are not about the girl dying, they're describing how the two split and the man's reflection on his new freedom from the burdening yet addictive relationship finally ending.

Very little of it is sad, rather it's describing the different abuse, conflicts, and intimate moments. It's a concept album! Listen to it like this and it'll make way more sense :)

  • @saltesc Thanks for your take. Gonna take another listen with this mindset.

  • @DSHC224 Here you go, from an interview with Peter;

"It’s basically a metaphor for a failing relationship. It’s not necessarily lamenting love lost. It’s sort of about a very hate-filled love, a relationship doomed from the beginning that just had no chance of ever working. In a way, it’s just about relationships in general. It’s not an uncommon kind of relationship to have happened, but it’s just not talked about as much as it should be."

  • @saltesc or it could remind you of your grandparents, both of whom died of cancer. and how your dad was didnt want you because your mom was fifty when she had you so now he abuses you. jus sayin

Btw, im white and middle class.

  • @helensshuchahazard Wow, we get it. You've painted yourself as a victim. You're also 14 so that explains while you'll readily tell a sop story about your hard life of abuse and grandparents dying of natural causes (oh, shock horror!) to the internet.

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen someone between 12 and 16 complain about how hard life is by using overly exaggerated or completely made up BS...

  • @saltesc lol wow, i was trying to downplay it. and the only reason i said that was because nobody i know knows my account name. So don't talk shit. And yeah, they died of natural causes. Doesn't mean i don't still love them. Would you shut your trap if i told you they were murdered? Were you sad when your grandparents died? It's kind of a human thing to do... And i know my life isn't the worst in the world, but i realize now that it's pretty bad. And judging from your talking, you had a

  • @saltesc playhouse on a rainbow and a white pony to get you there. I'm not a psychologist, but it's kind of obvious you don't give a shit. You just seem like a cold-hearted bastard. And yes, people who make this shit up suck.

  • I can proudly say that the first time I heard their album I cried my eyes out.

God, sometimes I love my brother for showing me music that I never would find on my own.

Great song, love the music video... Why dosen't this have like 20 millions of views?

  • How have I not noticed this band until now. I get continuious goosebumps

  • @iashton I listened to this song like a month ago, "got" the CD, forgot about it until like 4 days ago I noticed it in my playlist, have listened to it more than 6 times, right now I'm goinh for 7

  • Denmark eurovision 2011 song

  • @EpicEdiTzZ yeah.... right, its only the first 13 seconds that sound similar.

  • :'(

  • is it my speakers? i can't hear what he's saying at all

  • @boyeatworld try listening with headphones.

  • @boyeatworld put it on 720p , it's like another song is playing

  • 5 people know they're fucked and not getting unfucked soon.

  • @lula1100 the orb represents the baby, it gets broken (abortion) and then it gets picked up and she has to live with it for the rest of her life.

  • I really like this video, but to me it doesn't involve with the subject matter of the song. This is one of the best songs about unplanned pregnancy ever, and it'd be nice if the video reflected that. It looks more like an ad for The Way Back.

  • as the youtube link says, "YES".

  • It seriously pisses me off that this video has 5 dislikes. I'm not looking for thumbs-up, but it breaks my heart that people would even think about doing something like that,

  • @kidzcrazy8 they dont like it they love it

  • @kidzcrazy8 by "that" you mean "having an opinion" ?

  • @Gerbapapa Yes, that's exactly what I mean.

  • She's the brick and I'm drowning slowly, off the coast and I'm going nowhere.

  • @youngblunts Hah, Ben Folds :) Had me thinking about the same thing

  • This reminds me of the Myth of Sisyphus. But, instead it's a woman carrying a "rock" up a hill.

  • I'd really like if the chorus wasn't so upbeat. It's all perfect except for that snare.

  • Best song in their album!!!

  • This song makes me cry.

  • But like it could be about miscarriages cuz she is carrying it up the "mountain" and she is trying to get there but it falls and breaks.

  • Just saw these guys live at Laneway and they were nothing short of amazing. Like floating on an endless body of water...

  • Come on people, you're over exaggerating. This is mind-numbingly boring. If you want good, introspective, melancholy music try The Smiths, The Chameleons or The Cure.

Blows these kids out of the water.

  • @Sh0gunRua

    Hello, it's 2011 already!

  • @Sh0gunRua I can't work out if you're trolling.

Regardless, I'd advise you stop telling people what to think. It's unhealthy.

  • @samwa BAD ASS

  • @Sh0gunRua The Smiths are pretty good. But they aren't really sad. They're just whiny. This is true emotion.

  • i don't think its about abortion, maybe the decision between abortion and keeping it.

  • holy hipster this is some deep stuff.

  • @cupofcakee derp herp

  • steven segal would blow chuck norris up with a sausage....

  • You know this song is good when the link starts with YES

  • ); );

  • I like how in related videos i can see 'Alaska Brown Bear trapped'

I'm so indie that i'm going to watch that, whilst listening to this. Shyeah.

    '

  • is this song about an abortion?

  • @StarCreme It's the theory that I find fits most.

  • Tunes Award Winner 2010

  • why is this so fucking underrated?!?!?!?!!?!?

  • @Eyepiercings trust me its better that way, then it won't be slapped everywhere over everything.

  • there is no comment that will match this song & video there is no point.....

  • Even Chuck Norris would turn into an emotional wreck because of this album...

  • @189Wouter i'm sure I saw him sobbing in a corner the other day

  • @189Wouter No, he wouldn't, Chuck Norris would wreck your emotions

  • "We're Terrified of one another and terrified of what that means"

    best lyric of 2009

  • It ruins the magic to try so hard to see exactly what he meant. It's a good album and the important part is the emotion, that's what songs are about no matter how personalized the lyrics are. Where this feeling is is conditional, but that's the purpose of music. You can keep writing the meaning, doesn't hurt me, but I won't be reading any of it, and I think I'll enjoy it more.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

  • its cool when you find a new band that sounds amazing

  • Didn't even help her up the hill. Rude bastards. Love this song to bits.

  • @SmellyBellyification I could not agree with you more. This song is so great.

  • woah. those are the most beautiful eyes i've ever seen. just woah.

  • girl's cute in this video. amazing song too.

  • God I have goosebumps all over

  • great song, the video reminds me of that one sienfield episode where cramer tries to invent a balloon to hold oil and they throw it out the window of jerrys apartment

  • this band is like my little secret<3

    every song is fucking amazing!

  • :')

  • Love this song

  • why is the vocals so quiet throughout this whole damn album? i have to turn the shit up so loud when i have my headphones in.

  • @zeDonK987 It goes perfectly with the music though.

  • 2 people are bears.

  • outstanding

  • It's kind of magical and tragical all at once, it's just like sausage and mash, beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • why does it fucking matter what the hell it's about? it's beautiful.

  • @itshouldberaining Because if you interpret it correctly, you get an even better sense of just how brilliant it really is.

  • @megamania555 exactly (: hahaha.

  • @jda4874 I thought so too until the line "we're not scared of making caves or finding food for him to eat we're terrified of one another and terrified of what that means" so obviously they wouldn't mind taking care of the kid its more of a question of whether or or not they like eachother to have the baby

  • Comment removed

  • I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG

  • It's so sad :(

  • The cart and the orb represent the baby. Mom has to carry the huge burden by herself. Friend helps her when she falls. P cool.

  • Should this make me cry? is that normal? I'm crying.

  • @mitchamboy it's more than normal, it's expected.

  • @mitchamboy I saw your comment and thought Pshh... no way. I have an urge to cry right now, and I might give in.

  • @mitchamboy It's normal =(

  • Can someone help me understand this, I don't get how the video and the song relate.

  • @OdeToNecrophilia No,but your one.

    fuck off man. seriously.

  • @OdeToNecrophilia If you were really "wondering" no need to say faggot. -.-

the answer is no anyway, and all these songs are about one woman? Smart Move.

  • i never got this video... what is that ball?

  • forests and pretty girls make a great combination for making videos.

  • I love this album, even if it makes me bawl like a baby.

  • this song is so good that it made my nipples hard.

i love it so much that i want to scream.

  • video has to do with the myth of Sisyphus?

  • @cr4zee i think you mean myth of syphilis

  • I like the way this song makes me feel.

  • In case you've yet to realize, art isn't about anything, there is no right or wrong, there is no real way to read, hear, or see it, just take what you take from it and don't try to pretend that you are right or others are wrong. Many of the greatest artists have admitted they have no idea what their work is about, notably Freddy Mercury with bohemian rhapsody.

  • @gagebug artists are also interpreting their work, they did not invent the words, chords, notes, etc that they string together so they have an interpretation of those things in that order, and what that might mean to someone else.

  • What the shit is music video about? I know what the album is about but I don't quite understand this video.

  • She's wearing too much make-up for the woods.

  • Powerful song. I enjoyed the video so much. Thanks The Antlers, Evan Dennis, and Frenchkissrecords

  • nonono, this song is what whould have happend if sylvia bloch did not commit suicide, and Leonard Micheals and sylvia bloch did have a baby. read the book sylvia, which heavlily inspired hospice

  • Perfect video to symbolize the BP oil spill. She represents the burden of cleaning up the mess (giant tar ball) and what it's doing to our environment (oil dripping down the rock)... :-)

  • ....]= This is one of the saddest song I've ever heard.

  • NYC June 16th w/ the National..cannot wait...this song is a fucking masterpiece

  • @liquidsnake1979 That is massively unfair.

  • Hey, guys check out my music video to the song: vimeo .com/12143932

  • I love this, it sounds all twinkly and magical. Definately my favourite by them.

  • i just went to their gig!!! amazing!! the lead singer and drummer stayed behind for a chat.....so down to earth and genuine! they r even better live! luv em!!

  • Don't quite understand the video. (Can anyone help me out there, am I missing something?) Great band and song, though.

  • Honestly I'm not that impressed, the lyrics are okay, musically it sounds the same as the rest of the album. Masterpiece? No

  • @universalmusac Of course it sounds similar to the rest of the album, it's part of what -makes- it a masterpiece. If you didn't notice, they have multiple songs that have the same melodies. On it's own it's beautiful and sad, but it's -haunting- when you hear Epilogue and realize it's the same. c:

  • How does this video have anything to do with the song?

  • @Kazikox when looking at the text, you could interpret it not only as cancer which would go with the rest of the album, but rather as a baby. "there's a bear inside your stomach" could easily mean "you're pregnant." That's why the woman is dragging this giant black ball around with her, alone. She has to deal with all the burden (not saying that a baby is a burden, but that's how they portray it), and yeah. Then it drops, which could signify a miscarriage. not sure. :)

  • @aliciaingermanland And, to add to that, after the "miscarriage", she still has to carry the weight of the child with her, but now it's an emotional burden.

  • Ah man... A guy with a beard sitting under a tree and writing poetry? Not a big fan of the video. Great band, mind you.

  • Amazing video. Great analogy. Specially at the ending.

  • Be interesting to see how these guys follow up Hospice......great song!

  • i dont know this vid doesnt really do justice to the song

  • cant wait to see you with The National June 16th!!!

  • It was my understanding that the lead vocalist (Peter Silberman) actually met a young girl (possibly named Sylvia, not sure) while working at SloanKettering Cancer Center. Hospice is a result of his experience with her. Also, I've heard that he went into a period of hiding when writing in his apartment. The wiki page for Hospice features liner notes that can help you make sense of all the entrancing jams.

  • I haven't look at the album but from what I've seen from comments and by looking at the lyrics, he's using abortion as a metaphor for cancer; unwanted child that uses the body as a host. It's possible that his loved one COULD have had an abortion I don't know any of his biography, but it's still a great song!

  • pretty woods

  • Fucking masterpiece.

  • that is really an intense song - brutal but written with crazy raw emotion

  • Quality!
