My goodness...no matter how many times I hear her sing I am moved. she inspired the way I sing now and what i want to do for the rest of my life. ... Sing. I love Barbra Streisand!
When she sang this rendition of My Man, she achieved superstardom in my own opinion. She blew it out of the park and sang it with such emotion. When she changed it up (Lea Michelles version from glee sounds more like this) it just blew me out of the water. Im falling in love with you and your music Barbara, Celine and you are the best there is out there in female vocals.
"My Man" ~ Fanny Brice's version of this song can probably be found elsewhere on YouTube. Brice was not a 'belter'. That style of vocal came later with the likes of Merman and Garland. As Barbra points out here Brice's rendition of the song made her the 'toast of Broadway', but I am nonplussed by that version. Leave to Barbra to reinvent it in such spine tingling splendor as to make her the toast of Broadway (although due to copyright issues the song was not allowed in the stage version.)
Gosh, she's not just a singer, she's an artist before even the greatest pop and broadway singer. See how at the very end, she's living that character she just entered, and it's almost as though the applause is awkward. I love when a singer or instrumentalist is really a musician. It's more rare than people like to admit, but Babs has it in spades.
@cashlezz She is often not belting out her singing away from the microphone. Therefore, I would guess that there are microphones in that area of the stage.
IMHO, I think the filmed version of Funny Girl would have been better if they had used all of the music from the original production in the film, especially Cornet Man, Who Are You Now and The Music That Makes Me Dance. What a show that must have been !
The choreography of the camera in this segment is absolutely brilliant. No quick cuts, no flying camera angles from all around the room... nothing gets in the way of the performance. It's just Barbra's energy - captured.
She goes from a shy, demur, nevrous looking startlet to a "belting" deva in six minutes and takes the performance though every emotions in between! PURE CLASS. The best in the world at the top of her game.
Imagine if Barbra never existed until today as a 20 year old unknown girl that could sing and she did this song on u-tube. could you just imagine? I could see it now, 500 million Hit's! she would blow utube out of space!
@CCBaby type " on a clear day timeless" and watch the video... she's wearing a big dress.... watch the whole 2 minutes... that voice is not human! it's live!
@stevesg92 I was just reading about Barbara, she finished 4th in her Brooklyn NYC HS graduating class,a few days after she moved to Greenwich Village and started to play gigs in local clubs and immediately got discovered by talent agents from Columbia Records.
@hugatag She went to the same HS as my DAD: Erasmus high school.....If she graduated 4th then that's quite an accomplishment cause my dad said there were about 1000 kids in his Graduating class.
He never knew her (He graduated a year ahead of her, but his best friend dated her once)
@Spalle38rm Thank you for having mentioned Mina that is one of the most talented singer of all time, she is an icon.I'm Italian and i' m really happy that a great artist like Mina a legend in italy is known in all the world.
I was luky enough to grow up in NYC in this era. My dear parents believed that I should see culture, so when they took me to a Bway show, which then did not cost that much more than a first run movie, you saw Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet in Camelot, and when they let me watch TV, the great Gleason was on Saturday nights and Johnny Carson had guests ranging from Bob Hope to Groucho Marx and July Garland still performed. This performance is right out of that era-long gone, but not forgotten
Music that makes me dance is the most beautiful song especially if you are in such adoration and admiration with Funny Girl :) the film people get it wrong sometimes . Not including music that makes me dance was one of these times :)
@LiviaLvinLife I absolutely love that song and her delivery is sensational here! (Better than the soundtrack version imho) I absolutely have no idea why it was not included in the film.
@ronaldsanfran so true, perfect for the film. I think the Soundtrack version didnt have half the soul it could have ' it was half now its whole." I think the tone she took to this was much better ..:)
Sorry, the director of this special stated in no uncertain terms in an interview (here on Youtube) that B sang the songs "live" to prerecorded tracks AND THERE WAS NO AUDIENCE
@gabsylv Quite right! This mature lady was a girl when the "My Name is Barbra" special aired. She sang the songs "live" just as you state. The album of the same name was studio recorded. It contains some of her best efforts in my opinion. Check out that album's version of "WhenThe Sun Comes Out" and "I Can See It" if you can find it (CD is available online). She's so incredible, and I truly apologize for my inability to find existing words to describe her and do her justice...sorry...
ahhh one of those songs was sung by billy crystal in 1992´s oscars ceremony in the medley he usually does introducing the five pictures nominated for best, lol
I hate her political views, but I adore her movies and songs. Her voice is off the charts fantastic! "My Man" is so awsome. Funny Girl will always be one of my very favorites. I love Funny Lady also.
Thank you for posting this classic live performance.
Kismet12333, I have to agree with you. I like the old Barbara. Her personality, character and her energy should be separate from her political views. She is so talented with her voice and her acting, I hate when politics get in the middle. It ruins it for people.
Barbra is one of the true original Hollywood liberals whose incredible talent and likeability has always been able to transcend her otherwise polarizing politics. Unlike today's phony libs, at least she is the real deal. Despite being a Conservative, I adore and respect her for her opinions. She's New York Jew who made it HUGE at a very early age; of course she's a liberal!
Well, it doesn't matter, I still love her...she is the best performer in theater, also Liza Minnelli, I have to give her credit too, but Barbara is so diverse in her voice. I just love that.
@2121421214 I suppose you are saying this from an all knowing, allseeing position, of great insight. You, with all the wisdom in the world, you have all the answers to the worlds problems and could solve all the world's problems. If only everyone were like you, the world would be a perfect place. If what I have written is not an accurate description of you, then you should allow a little room in the world for alternative thought and action.
0:38 the look she gives the camera was so precise, and was timed perfectly. The quick eyebrow raise and the widened eyes were something that only someone like her thinks to do.
For "Octogarden 72," despite what you may have read, this is live singing in front of a live audience with a live orchestra--and the best and most thrilling a human being is capable of. Was performed (as you know) for the "My Name Is Barbra" special, first shown on April 28, 1965. One of her special gifts is she makes it seem so effortless that some people assume, well it must be pre-recorded. Not true. Listen and watch and be awed, like the rest of us!
It was performed live before an audience - the entire episode was pre-taped before it aired however. It's as live as, say, a live performance at a pre-taped awards show is today. For some songs she did an extra take, or more - not sure if that's true here. Still, this was all done at once that's for sure. :)
NOT BETTER THAN JUDY, DIFFERENT PERFORMER , different era.... in my opinion no one can get the rawness out of a song like judy its just uncontrolable power though barbra was a more polished singer IS I mean ahha
Once for Easter I took an egg & drained it & made it into Barbra Streisand's head, sculpted her nose on it & painted it to look just like her with lashes; then I made her body, a little gibson wig & a golden gown so that it depicted her from Hello Dolly. She stood about 10 inches tall & I made the finale set from the Harmony Gardens with the staircase & set her in it. I called her "Barbra Streggsand". My friend Brian made an "Eggvita" (Evita) from the musical. Then began the annual EGG WAR.
@TheDesperateHodges well.... I think that considering that Judy was drunk or half high and broke and was able to dredge up such energy and power and evoke total control and discipline...... compared to Barbra who is the epidemi of perfectionism and self control... I think Judy was better..... I could only imagine if Judy would've had a different... heeh its frightening ! although someone said that when the talent is so overwhelming thats the only way to deal with it! who knows!
@TheDesperateHodges thats ur opinion they are both phenomenal in their own ways. Don't state it as a fact it may be true for u, but other would disagree.
I agree she is the very best female popular vocalist of her generation. How can one compare her with the great opera singers? Are they better, or is there no comparison because the styles are different?
my dad thinks she was the greatest singer the world's ever known
and belive me. my dad's very picky about music. he and my mom grew up with this kind of music, so i'm glad i hear more of this stuff than other 14 year olds lol
Holy... whatever! She just explodes off the screen! How could some who was so young be so accomplished? Powerful! A Phenom from the very beginning. WOW!
Barbra...you are absolutlyfking ..AMAZING...I ask myself everyday...how is it that just "ONE" person on this entire planet, can be soo blessed with such amazing talent, & a voice so soothing, BREATHTAKING & BEAUTIFUL, that makes your hair stand ???? ( mindboggling!)
I'm right with her politics. She just wants the world to be better. The Bush administration has run the country into the gutter, that's what she's been saying, and that's undeniable folks, republican or democrat.
Not only does her talent transcend and marginalize most singers, but from the 3:45 mark of this video, Streisand presents woman in one of her most radiant moments ever captured on film.
Can it be said more frankly......Streisand puts all these so-called Pop singers today to shame....not only for her immense talent, but her skill at using it.

and belive me. my dad's very picky about music. he and my mom grew up with this kind of music, so i'm glad i hear more of this stuff than other 14 year olds lol

I'm right with you carly. she's absolutely superb. it really does not, doesn't even come close to getting any better than Mrs. Barbra Streisand.

Her voice, acting is AWESOME, wish her politics were! Love ya, though, Babs :)
Jany1954 2 years ago 3
Her politics are pristine.
nycmanhattanite 2 years ago 7
I'm right with her politics. She just wants the world to be better. The Bush administration has run the country into the gutter, that's what she's been saying, and that's undeniable folks, republican or democrat.

Not only does her talent transcend and marginalize most singers, but from the 3:45 mark of this video, Streisand presents woman in one of her most radiant moments ever captured on film.
byronpriebe 2 years ago 2
make that "idealized woman"..I don't think she's singing songs like this anymore, and she still is radiant...and feminist

Can it be said more frankly......Streisand puts all these so-called Pop singers today to shame....not only for her immense talent, but her skill at using it.
