I've always thought Andy Williams was unjustly dismissed as a singer-Sure he had plenty of regrettable "Pop" hits in the late 60's-but when singing a worthy song, nobody had his TONE.
Ella Fitzgerald really did not understand how talented she was. Sad to say but on her death bed she spoke about how so many people showed her such love and then she wondered why.
You can just tell from their faces that they are having an absolute blast doing this!! You can't really see that in entertainers (particularly singers) nowadays.
When I read your comment and thought about it for a bit you are defintely right. Singers today don't sing that with joy that they have done in the past. That's one of the reasons why I much prefer yesterday's singers. They were REAL singers who treated singing as an art and not just a money making career. Singing seemed to be a passion for them unlike today. Ella Fitzgerald loved singing and you can see that in every performance that she gave. btw, I love this duet!
I have just herd Andy speak about Ella quote " It was the high point in my life not only to sing with Ella but to spend time with her on my show and i had her on my show as many times as i could. Shes my favorite" well that says it about Andy and Ella.
I was on long distance truck driving in the UK. Did my job and devlievered to all the factories that I had to and saw many towns up north of England, but it was lonesome sometimes. Stayed in some dives, once with 30 guys all snoring, never got a wink of sleep. One night I had a room to my own and a TV. Turned it on and watched The Andy Williams Show. Wow, did it cheer me up. I laughed, I cried and I felt part of the human race. Thanks Andy.
She was a guest on his show several times (and Dinah Shore's also). That might've contributed to her comfort level. Both hosts displayed a genuine admiration and affection for good singers, and when they had Ella (either doing a solo or in a duet with them) you could see the joy in both their faces. I love these television duets!! And check out from about 3:33 on, they just tear it up until that great last pullback shot.
This was true. Andy is a still a nice guy well respected in the industry. When it came to Ella Andy, Dinah, Dean, Sinatra etc loved having her as a guest. I miss the days that she was a regular on TV even in the 70s when i was small. The Boston Pops is what sold me! The first time i saw her was in 1973. Love her style ...love this medley too.
What i like about Ella is no matter who she sings with she remains humble and contained. Yet who ever sings with Ella, she makes them bring their A+ game. She is the Best singer.
I miss musical variety television...The beauty of collaboration, of demonstrating perfect harmony through song. And Andy & Ella did this on his series *several* times- and always were a perfect duet- in living color. And what a stunning final harmonic blend and pullback shot on 'lonesome roooooad.' Pure joy.
and it'll never be back, as most of the singers of today rely heavily on technology i.e music equivalent of photoshop n are probably hopeless at live singing.
WHAT A PAIR!!! The more I watch this video the more I appreciate the way they really ENJOY their duet, how their voices blend together so harmoniously!
Yes... I wish it was today! This is really TIMELESS!
It was a honour to be on Andy Williams Show, it was a place where music from all over the world have been performed, to fill the soul with infinity of sounds!
What a lovely performance =) Great job Tatane73, you posted some really qualitative videos to contribute to all of us!
I've had the audio of this for some time now. It's good to finally see it. The two previous years are already up on youtube. What song did Ella sing before this duet?

@chaseyl1 I consider Andy Williams much better than Sinatra. He had this magnificent romanticism in his voice as you say nobody had.

Considering she is singing with one of the best crooners ever, they both brought their A game. Cool video.

@namib6969 You hit the nail right on the head. Elle made singers try their best. I guess if you sang with Elle that ment you made it.
