  • check "swatrub1 video 35" plays it just like kottke

  • Just wondering, are you using acrylic nails on these videos? Or just your natural nails?

  • PearTree;

    Just natural nails, kept pretty short.

    Rgds,

    Joe Carpenter

  • guitar comes naturally to you i think, you look like you have alot of fun, and thats good.

  • very good!! I love this song very much. I can play most of it but not all. I noticed you mentioned TabPigs in another comment, i'll check it out. Thanks.

  • Thanks Caven.

  • not bad, but at 0.45 kottke start on c dur and not g dur, tryy and sounds better, from 1.50 kottke plays faster than you? if yo try can get that sound right

  • 1azzatir1;

    I play the entire tune slower than LK, not just that part.

  • 1assatir1;

    I am ending on the G, but the next riff certainly starts on C.

    Rgds,

    Joe Carpenter

  • Joe, while your version is definitely different than Leo's, you are definitely the first player I have heard who captures that certain magic from wherever it is that Leo finds it. This song mesmerized me when I first heard it and changed the way I look at the guitar. Now, over a decade later, you're the first player other than Leo himself who has been able to evoke that feeling through this song. I am more than impressed.

  • Mike;

    Many thanks for the very kind comments. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Rgds,

    Joe

  • coming again to hear fine Leopicking of Tenntoad, it's wonderful again.

    Wish you a fine weekend

    Michael

  • Thanks Michael....the same back to you.

    Rgds,

    Joe

  • thanks, i must have missed that in the tab

  • can you tell me what chord or fingering at 1:40 when you use your thumb on fret 1 E string??

  • The chord is: 1XX3231

    You can get our tab for this tune from the TabPigs site. This chord can be found at measure 24 (first instance).

    Hope this helps.

    Rgds,

    Joe

  • i like how you do the arpeggio section, good adaptation

  • Thanks Zgr9. A lot of faking going on in that section! ;-)

  • this guitar sounds for a taylor 12 string a little bit strange, i think its a guitar from the last years? the taylor kottke guitars were good in the 90ies. i have a modell from 95 and its good. but in the last years they have like martin no more valor. a martin this days is shit. i have a martin from 1940 and its heaven

  • Hmmm....where to begin?

    - It's a '91 model, which is the same year I brought it. (easy to tell, as the signature inlay is on the 15th fret). This is when the top was belled, versus flat as they are now.

    - I'm playing through a small PA on the vid (note the cord).

    - Audio was through the camera mic, not via the board.

    The problem I have with old Martin's in their consistency. Some are great, but some are real bad (just like old Gibson's).

    Rgds,

    Joe Carpenter

  • Very nice cover! I'm from Arkansas!

  • Sounds great. What gauge strings do you use?

  • String gauges are mediums (Elixir Nanowebs). Glad you liked it....thanks. String gauges are mediums. .013 thru 0.56, but with a wound octave A, versus a steel. Tuned down either 1.5 or 2 steps (can't remember exactly which one I was at for this recording).

    Hope this helps.

    Rgds,

    Joe

  • Much appreciated!

  • This brings me back to my introduction to Leo Kottke - via the 6 & 12 String Guitar album - as well as the whole concept of tuning a 12-string low with heavy strings.

    On a different note, what is the blinking red light reflecting on the guitar at around 2:30. I thought someone was taking aim at you with a laser scope. YIKES!!

  • Yeah, that album did it for me too. It's a classic.

    Never noticed the blinking red dot before. Must be the guy running the cam....guess his poower was getting low? Beats me.

  • I know I've already commented on this one, but I agree with the voice at the end...beautiful!

    Those thumb over the top chords are killer on a 12 string aren't they?

  • LOL....thanks. Only sometimes, like when you need a thumb-over at the 7th fret (ala Travis). And the guitar has something to do with it too. A 12 with a "Louisville Slugger" neck can make even a thumb-over Fmag apain.

    :-)

  • What is it you are doing in the middle section from about 1:48 to 2:48? Is it just an alternating bass thing using similar chords to the original?

    I like your version more than the original too...

  • Good eye.....same chords as the original, but a different roll of the strings (more forward rolling than backward rolling).

    I'm glad you liked this version, but it would have been better without a couple of the hand farts that are in there. ;-)

    Oh well.......

    Rgds,

    Joe

  • Joe, I'm just gonna come out and say it... I like yours better than the album version. I like the slower tempo--not as perfect, but neither is life, which is what this music is all about. You think you can send me an audio of this? I'm tired of having to be on youtube to hear it!

    -Gordon

  • Will do Gordo. Need to get off my ass & do this for you.

  • super sound and well played

  • Very cool....thanks

  • I've always loved this song. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone else do it, and this is GREAT (not surprising after watching you're other videos). The tone is excellent, and you've got the picking down perfectly -- the note separation is top notch. Keep 'em coming!

  • Great playing! I want an LKSM so bad..

  • Great sound and playing,

    Rev
