Would you be able to physically lift her weight out of the pool if the steps gave way? I would hate for you to be sorry if she drowned. I just worry...I'm not suggesting that you don't take excellent care of her.
@RacisimNotIntended Sydney is a pure bred Bernese. She is a female and has nearly perfect markings. Not sure what your knowledge of the breed actually is.
We took our first bernese to the beach and as soon as we let her off the lead to have a trot around she sprinted into the sea and stayed in there for a good 20 minutes!
She saw some birds on the other side of the bay and wanted to go get them! It was deep enough for her to swim but I could walk straight across so I just followed her until she turned back to the shallower bits to splash around instead :D
bernese and water...u have to start when they are very young, past 12months, if they still havent gone in, they probably never will. i got my berner to follow dogs in on hot summer days, when he was 4months, and now he loves the water...its also good cuz it allows him to cool off
Thx for all the great comments/compliments... have to say my fave part was always the ladder creaking as she goes up. We opened the pool this weekend - she can't wait get in!!
i have one question when your bermese was a puppy was she/he crazy because we just got one he eats everything chases everything chews everything. is it normal for them?
itdepends on the dog one of mine was crazy i have vids of her she pulled the gutters off the house and took the clothes off the line lol but you just have to be firm bernease hate to be giving out to because they love affection so much she isnt that bad anymore although she is very hyper compared to my other bernease dog but he is gettin old
To the viewers that thought our bernese was a mix she is actually not. Sydney is a female and extremely active. Females are typically 80-100lbs whereas males can be much larger.
I took my Bernese out for a walk last night and a Hunter shot him. Apparently he mistook him for a bear charging. I'm devastated! He was my little buddy! :(
@coreyfmiller i was walkin my rottweiler (this 1 is a true story) & a breeder stopped me & ended up tellin me that the rottweiler came about by mixin a bernese (50kg) with a german pinscher (20kg), now if that story is true... a purebreed rottweiler 'country raised' or thru selctiv breeding can weigh 80kg not fat, so if its half pinscher how big can a bernese get?
My Berner loves the water! She swims in the river in our backyard almost every day! she just jumps right in. getting everyone around her wet =]. She's a great dog. Also, very beautiul. I recomend this breed to anyone who is looking for a nice, family pet.
my berner is so afraid of water that she shakes like crazy when near it and wont even get her paws wet! i wish she would swim! my other one only goes in to her tummy.
I was thinking of getting one myself, but i wuld like to know more about them
Some say they have weak hips and leg joints and i wudnt want to have mine in pain so how could i tell?? Would he be limping if he starts getting pain?? And can it come from over-exersize??
Also do they need a very big backyard or would they be happy indoors??
well most giant breeds of dog do have week hips and leg joints so I would suggest you dont make him jump too much and not to over exercise a puppy as they're not fully grown and they need all the energy from the food they eat to grow big and strong =) and they dont need a really big garden but they'd be happy with anything! So long as there is a garden they'll be fine :)
when they are puppies you should leave them when they sleep(a quiet place where they can sleep) because with mine we had so many vistors he became over tired, also walk them regularly but not too long of walks as we walked him too much and he began limping in his back leg whick wasnt nice too see him in pain...but 6 years on he is still going strong! Mostly berneses love company and when you get your puppy take lots of photos because they grow so fast lol. Good luck!
Thanks :) Lol yeh i saw some other videos of them, theres a huge size difference even when their still so young!! Thank you for the advice :P the only thing ill be worrying about all the time is over-excersize coz u dont want to under-exercise them either :P but thank u very much :)
i have a bernese mountain dog too. she is still a puppy so i don't know about if she will have hip problems. but since we live in hott texas she prefers to be inside and she is okay with that. we have a very small backyard butt we walk her once a day and she is fine
Ours is very good with the cats, but the cats are not too good with him! If you decide to get a BMD, you will not be dissapointed. They are some of the best dogs around! There is nothing like a 120lb. lap dog
When i "walk" my Bernese around the lake near our house, I'm walking and he's swimming next to me all the way and he doesn't even wanna come out ^^
