Never have i seen a bust like Vernon Gholston. In 3 years the dude did jack shit. JACK SHIT! No sacks and like a total tackles in just the teen range. And the worst is that he wasn't injured or anything through the 3 years. He was just that bad.
he's not a hard worker. he has no technique. i saw him tonight live and he couldn't use his hands at all to get pastt a blocker. he looks like he quits alot and just overall didn't inspire me. saw little effort. felt the same about roy williams but i believe he has a higher chance of success. this guy was born a bust he just used athletisism to get by.
He had such Raw potential coming out of College when he got drafted the Jets fans where loving it but then after 3 years even they accepted he was a bust and for most part only a workout warrior. As much as i'd like him to i can't see Gholston ever living up to his 4th pick overall. But good luck in Chiccago Vernon
I'm sorry Bears fans but this guy is simply a bust he hasn't recorded one sack and God knows he had the chance more than once. He was drafted to play Outside Linebacker and that didn't work so he was moved to Defensive which he played in college that didn't work either maybe in the Bears 4-3 defense and under the guiding of Peppers he might be able to become average at best Rex Ryan couldn't even make this kid live up to his potential and Rex is a Defensive coach. sadens me as he had such hype
This guy is a pure pass rusher. That means hand on the ground ready to rush. Why in the heck did the Jets put him as read and react linebacker? A waste of 260 lbs. In the right situation he's the Bears answer to Clay Matthews.

watching these highlights make me wonder where the hell the jets went wrong. If the Jets didn't pick him, somebody else would have and he woulda been a bust for them instead. Seriously i know NFL is much tougher than college but the quarterbacks don't get much stronger

quite a good jets player. not. how the hell did he have one of the most impressive nfl combines EVER and not even record a sack. This man has to think about whether he wants to play football or not because he has teh physical talent, just doesnt choose to use it.
Additionally, if you look at 1:30 in, you can see Cameron Heyward (I assume he would've been a freshman or sophomore at the time) literally pancake Jake Long :/
He was never right for the 3-4 as an OLB or a DE, I think the Jets were stupid for ever even trying that with him. Idk if he would be any good in 4-3 but he would definitely have a much better chance at success.
Should be confirmed soon that Gholston is being released soon.
A lot of people are saying he never contributed because he had to switch from 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB. I don't think that can be much of an excuse anymore. He had plenty of time to adjust. And let's not forget there are a significant number of players who make that transition every year and many even benefit from it. Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Brian Orakpo, and DeMarcus Ware all mad the transition. Why couldn't Gholston?
Solution for Jets put his ass at DE like he wants for this upcoming year and if he doesnt show any sign of wat they want out of him then cut him.....they need to stop bull shiting wit this LB transition crap at let him play DE his comfort position and then theres no excuses if he doesnt play well cause thats the position he is best at
Idk its not that he cant succeed in the NFL i just think his Work ethic isnt there cause the talent is he just needs to work and i dont think hes doing that i mean the ma is makeing 15 mil i think in his 5 year contract and its his 3 goin on 4 year hes made over half of that doing nothing but relaxing on the sideline im pretty sure thats how he sees it or eles he would be playing right now
If he's been so horrible, why haven't the jets traded him? He's still a young player, only 24 years old, and has potential. For those that don't realize, he isn't a freaking LB... he's a DE. Making that transition isnt very easy, gotta relearn to play the game. Go Bucks.
@hoarski No he wouldn't. People don't realize that both Eric Mangini and Rex Ryan played him in 4-3 packages and he was as quiet as a Church mouse. GHOSTon is garbage. Plain and simple. Built like Hercules, plays like Jane. Worst draft pick in Jets history.
he fits the 4-3 better than the 3-4. more of an edge rusher. too bad. just like vilma, we're going to trade him for next to nothing and he will have some success elsewhere
Yeah, but, and I've made this point in other forums, but, the Jets (at least nowadays) can afford to whiff bigtime on a draft pick because (at least nowadays) their team is good. Now, as a Bills fan, we can't afford to miss on a draft pick. That's why having Aaron Maybin (i hate having to spell his useless name) really hurts, we can't afford to whiff like that. 2 seasons, Maybin = no sacks.
People are saying that he a bust but look at the nyj linebackers 3-4 scheme for him is fked with chris jenkins on one end and jason taylor on the other end but bart scott? really he aint no bust plp thought vy he was a bust cuz of the int but vg is gettin expirence and he just got back switched into de and if u change his postiton from linebacker to de his overall on madden will be 90+ skill but diff position in nfl
2 years ago I was saying he was a bust and everyone was talking shit. Boy do I feel better now. But from ESPN is saying, if Gholston records a sack, he gets a huge bonus that may force the Jets to cut him. His piss poor play is actually KEEPING him employed. And yes Gholston is prolly better off playin as a down lineman, but the Jets have played him in nickel packages and he still hasnt performed. He struggles because he only has a bull rush and a speed rush. NFL DEs need to be well-rounded
@Playboyy1985 Tedd Ginn = one of the most explosive kick returners in the league. Beanie Wells = behind a bad O line with no passing game, none of the RB's can do anything in Arizona, he had 2nd most yards of rookies last year. Vernon Gholston = in the wrong scheme, he's a 4-3 DE in a 3-4 scheme. Donte Whitner = a solid NFL starter, already has 73 tackles this year and has started every game.
@isthmous Sorry man, nobody spends a 9th overall pick hoping to get an explosive kick returner. Hes a bust. Beanie Wells might be good some day its hard to tell cuz he team sucks nuts. Vernon Gholsten fuckin blows, wrong scheme or not, how is it even possible for him to be that bad. He can't even hold down a starting position. Lamar Woodley was a DE in college, and hes an all-pro linebacker now.
In Gholston's defense, it was a bit of a personnel miscue by the Jets in spending a top 5 pick on a player who was changing position. Putting a power-rush 4-3 end in coverage was doomed from the start. Gholston's probably one of the strongest guys in the NFL so I think he should accumulate greater success this season at defensive end.
This guy really needs to step it up this year or his lazy ass is gone this guy has no heart for the game but has alot of potential, a very lazy player
Well we have to remember, hes going back to defensive end (like in college) Not even close to a bust, a bust Ryan leaf, because he sucked his WHOLE Career, This kid is still young, give him sometime, he'll be alright.
@luthmhor Yeah, Rex Ryan Says Gholston Will Be The Fastest DE In The League. He's Doing Very Well ( I Watched Him Myself) He Just Looks So Much Comfortable Now. He's Honestly One Of The Biggest Parts Of This Jets Team Now. If He Hits You, That's Your Life.
bust so far..but as a ravens fan i kno rex will utilize this guy more..look at what happened with bart scott when he was with baltimore ws playing ST until he had a breakout season in 06 same with adalius thomas give him more time
Gholston is a classic case of taking the money and running. I mean, just LOOK at the guy! He's built like a brick shithouse at 260 lbs, runs a 4.6 40 and can bench press 460 lbs! He was the only guy to beat Jake Long for a sack in college. There's absolutely NO REASON this guy shouldnt be on the verge of a Pro Bowl by now. But God given athletic ability will only take you so far in the NFL. Bottom line is, you have to have BALLS. This guy has none.....just no desire to be great at all.
I had doubts about Gholston going into that draft because so much of his talent came from athletic ability alone. But in the NFL you need more than that. I was hoping McFadden would fall to the Jets. I still believe McFadden will be good, just as soon as he leaves the Raiders. Gholston you wasted our 6th overall pick. We gave you 35 million dollars, and now in a few years you are going to be selling insurance door to door. FUCK YOU!!
Damn he sure is good when 90% of the footage is him going unblocked to the quarterback. Credit osu's d coordinator if anything. This guy is not impressive. BUST
say hes a bust if you want to but some of the stuff you say is bull some of you attack him personally that is lame some of us are just honstally upset jets/football fans MOST OF you just sound like real haters man. upset that he played division 1 football?, or went to collage for free, or that if most teams had that pick they would of picked gholston? or that if hes smart, he would never have to work a day again? say he a bust but dont attack a person who worked hard to be where he is charter
Palmer hasnt been the same since the knee injury. Tatupu is decent. Polamalu, maybe the best safety to ever play the game. Cushing, rookie of the year. Matthews, 2nd in line to Cushing for rookie of the year. etc etc. But Im a Cal fan so dont really care that much :D.
we look at the probowl there are more big ten player in there then sec and usc let talk abut USC weak NFL palyers Reggie Bush Wack hasnt had an !1,000 yard season Landale white Ass, Dwayne Jarrett not in the league matt leinert was the franshise and got his shot taken by a man in his late 30's Tattupo fooled everyone his first year thats it carson plamer averge always playin hurt really USC has players kill yourself
LOL, I don't know about that. I'm too lazy to look it up and check what college each pro bowler attended, but I'm pretty confident that your talking out of your ass. Anyway, what the hell are you talking about? I agree, Bush is a bust, but he just won a Super Bowl and was a large contributor. LenDale nearly ran for a combined 2000 yards in 07-08 and the only reason he didn't many carries this year was because C. Johnson is a BEAST. Palmer had a down year, but he's still a top QB.
@ECLRG10 ill just go over last years Ohio State picks; Malcolm Jenkins, just won a Superbowl with the Saints, who are very excited about his potential. Beanie Wells, arguably should have been offensive rookie of the year and James Laurinaitis who finished second or third for defensive rookie of the year with St. Louis. Ohio State has just as many good NFL players as other top tier schools.
Jarrett and Leinert are busts, no denying that. Other than this year in which he was hurt, Tatupu has been great each year he's been in the league. Now let's look at the USC players that you decided not to mention. Polamalu: Arguably the best safety in the league next to Ed Reed. Brian Cushing just won rookie defensive player of the year. Clay Matthews had a great year for GB. Steve Smith was 2nd in the league in receptions and 8th in reception yards. That is just a small sample. Shall I go on?
Youre talking out of your ass now. First, you compare an entire conference, the Big Ten, to one college football team, USC. Bush is a very good third down back, punt returner, receiver. Never was a guy who could break tackles. White is an average running back. But really, how many Big Ten running backs have been better than average lately? Jarrett has been with a quarterback who wouldnt throw him the ball. Actually, Delhomme threw the ball more to the opposition than his own team.
@joshsmith199065 yea the fuck will smith got 3 pro bowls right now and he has had 6 season with 8 sacks or more and thats not good? stop fucking hatin
I outta take a nut on his face for him being the bust he is for he Jets. If he was just even somewhat decent the Jets defense would be greater than it was this season.
The guy just doesn't have the heart for football. He was a one trick pony in college who is still a 1 trick pony in the NFL the problem with that is the talent level in the NFL that stuff doesn't work.
Also he got by in college by being a superior athlete.
Typical Ohio State buckeye. These guys look good in the mediocre Big Ten, but then go to the NFL and become busts. When was the last time a buckeye became something more than average in the NFL.....Eddie George? Ohio State=where busts are produced.
LMAO, how long did it take you to create that list. I'll give you Clements(although, I think he's overrated, but still a solid CB), Mangold(all-pro potential), and Will Smith(very underrated DE). Other than that, the rest of this list are just average. Wells had a solid rookie year, but the jury is still out on him. Gamble is nothing but a decent/average corner. Whitner had one good rookie season and hasn't done anything since. Minus the SB catch, Homes is just a run of the mill WR.
Of course the Buckeyes are going to churn out decent picks, I'm just saying that with the large amount of top-level HS prospects they get every year and their success in the Big Ten, they should be giving out much higher quality NFL players than they do now, I'm just saying that Ohio State and their players are generally overrated compared to players from teams like USC and upper-echelon SEC teams. Compare draft picks from Ohio State to the aforementioned teams. It's not even close.
@ECLRG10 we look at the probowl there are more big ten player in there then sec and usc let talk abut USC weak NFL palyers Reggie Bush Wack hasnt had an !1,000 yard season Landale white Ass, Dwayne Jarrett not in the league matt leinert was the franshise and got his shot taken by a man in his late 30's Tattupo fooled everyone his first year thats it carson plamer averge always playin hurt really USC has players kill yourself
godlike my ass, hes one of the biggest busts from that draft class, he was a waste, the jets could have had jerod mayo, a probowler, but no we get this lazy asshole
@jg444jg444 Mayo hasnt had the year like he did his rookie year. Gholston has all the tangibles to be great. he seems to quit on plays and not keep playing with the high motor thats needed in front 7 in nfl. I have to give him 1 more year before i label VG a bust. Mario Williams took 3 years and he's been OK not like other Dlineman that have been taken 1st. like a bruce smith.
@00tonytone Vernon has done nothing to prove me wrong about him. In two years he has 17 tackles and no sacks. You are wrong about Williams in his first year he had 4.5 sacks, thats more than Golston has in his career and in his second year he had 14.5 so it didn't take Williams 3 years. he was a stud from the start.
@jg444jg444 Lmao at Jerod Mayo being a pro bowler, he was a good rookie who was terrible last year. Nothing compared to David Harris and Bart Scott.
Plus the Jets were between Gholston and McKelvin before the draft, both did nothing in the pros. But Gholston's looking a lot better right now, he's been great all offseason for the first time in his career now that he's back at DE. Frankly, if it's between Gholston and McKelvin, I'd take the Ghost. They're both busts to this point though.
@jg444jg444 You have to remember though, Jerod Mayo was a reach when he was taken. The Redskins were expecting to be able to take him at 21. Plus Vernon was the only guy that was able to force Jake Long to give up a sack in college. It was hard to see that he would have fell this hard.
everyone whose sayin hes a bust obviously doesnt watch any football cause the jets have the best linebackers and he doesnt play at all really he will be ridic
@nykilla45 I agree the JETS really havent given him a chance to rush the passer. A guy so dominate in college cant just loose that edge in NFL . VG only guy to get a sack in college against LONG from dolphins and they are in JETS division. I dont know how u can give up on such raw speed and talent. U have to be nuts, or maybe they just dont like his work ethics or something. JETS give up on him watch it bite them in the ass. and that would really bring back SOJ"s
Are you guys serious??? Gholston has had ample opportunities with the Jets. You guys do realize that the Jets play a 3-4, meaning they have 4 linebacker spots and backups will get a lot of playing time because theres a lot of LB rotation in a 3-4 defense. He was competing with Bryan freaking Thomas and couldn't even beat him out for the starting spot. Don't get me wrong, Thomas is a solid LB, but nothing special. Gholston is a bust, there is no denying that.
Did you not read the rest of my comment? I'm guessing you don't follow the Jets nor have any idea how shitty Gholston is. He's had his opportunities with Mangini and Rex Ryan. It's arguable whether he was in a good environment under Mangini, but there is no excuses for him with Rex. Rex plays the perfect defense scheme for a monster athlete like Gholston and he still hasn't done jack shit under Rex.
@ECLRG10 dont assume that i dont follow the jets cuz i bet i know more about them then u do thats 1, and second, he didnt feel he had the amount of opportunities he needed to succeed. that is all
How can I not assume that you don't follow the jets? If you did, like you claim you do, then you would know that Gholston has had plenty of chances to succeed. Go read my original comment, I'm not going to waste my time repeating myself. "he didnt feel he had the amount of opportunities he needed to succeed. that is all". Um no shit, of course a bust like gholston is going to say something like that, when everyone knows that is complete bullshit.

@ECLRG10 Not at DE. He hasn't played DE at all in the NFL. That's where he is now, and he's been great at it so far. I don't think he'll ever be the Pro Bowl player he should've been, but he will be a decent starting 3-4 DE.

Gholston will thrive in a 4-3. Oakland should give him a go. He has the Al Davis measurables and would get a chance in a system that fits him.
BIRTHDAYWordplay 11 months ago
Should be confirmed soon that Gholston is being released soon.
A lot of people are saying he never contributed because he had to switch from 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB. I don't think that can be much of an excuse anymore. He had plenty of time to adjust. And let's not forget there are a significant number of players who make that transition every year and many even benefit from it. Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Brian Orakpo, and DeMarcus Ware all mad the transition. Why couldn't Gholston?
RyanJ504 11 months ago
so strange. apparantly the Jets are cutting Godlike players these days........LMFAO
StormintheUK 11 months ago
Gholston is just soft now that he's in the NFL. Warren Sapp said it best... he's afraid of contact.
descendency 11 months ago
@descendency Wow if thats true..... Gholston = Biggest Pussy in the NFL even more than the kickers
Killerdoctor27 11 months ago
Solution for Jets put his ass at DE like he wants for this upcoming year and if he doesnt show any sign of wat they want out of him then cut him.....they need to stop bull shiting wit this LB transition crap at let him play DE his comfort position and then theres no excuses if he doesnt play well cause thats the position he is best at
wtfitsbrian 11 months ago
Idk its not that he cant succeed in the NFL i just think his Work ethic isnt there cause the talent is he just needs to work and i dont think hes doing that i mean the ma is makeing 15 mil i think in his 5 year contract and its his 3 goin on 4 year hes made over half of that doing nothing but relaxing on the sideline im pretty sure thats how he sees it or eles he would be playing right now
wtfitsbrian 11 months ago
honestly gholston can only be effective if he puts his hand in the turf.
jamiemack14 11 months ago
If he's been so horrible, why haven't the jets traded him? He's still a young player, only 24 years old, and has potential. For those that don't realize, he isn't a freaking LB... he's a DE. Making that transition isnt very easy, gotta relearn to play the game. Go Bucks.

@hoarski No he wouldn't. People don't realize that both Eric Mangini and Rex Ryan played him in 4-3 packages and he was as quiet as a Church mouse. GHOSTon is garbage. Plain and simple. Built like Hercules, plays like Jane. Worst draft pick in Jets history.

bdukie11 1 year ago
Yeah, but, and I've made this point in other forums, but, the Jets (at least nowadays) can afford to whiff bigtime on a draft pick because (at least nowadays) their team is good. Now, as a Bills fan, we can't afford to miss on a draft pick. That's why having Aaron Maybin (i hate having to spell his useless name) really hurts, we can't afford to whiff like that. 2 seasons, Maybin = no sacks.

bosnian23x 1 year ago
2 years ago I was saying he was a bust and everyone was talking shit. Boy do I feel better now. But from ESPN is saying, if Gholston records a sack, he gets a huge bonus that may force the Jets to cut him. His piss poor play is actually KEEPING him employed. And yes Gholston is prolly better off playin as a down lineman, but the Jets have played him in nickel packages and he still hasnt performed. He struggles because he only has a bull rush and a speed rush. NFL DEs need to be well-rounded

Playboyy1985 1 year ago
@Playboyy1985 Tedd Ginn = one of the most explosive kick returners in the league. Beanie Wells = behind a bad O line with no passing game, none of the RB's can do anything in Arizona, he had 2nd most yards of rookies last year. Vernon Gholston = in the wrong scheme, he's a 4-3 DE in a 3-4 scheme. Donte Whitner = a solid NFL starter, already has 73 tackles this year and has started every game.
isthmous 1 year ago
@isthmous Sorry man, nobody spends a 9th overall pick hoping to get an explosive kick returner. Hes a bust. Beanie Wells might be good some day its hard to tell cuz he team sucks nuts. Vernon Gholsten fuckin blows, wrong scheme or not, how is it even possible for him to be that bad. He can't even hold down a starting position. Lamar Woodley was a DE in college, and hes an all-pro linebacker now.

JackMahhogoff 11 months ago
In Gholston's defense, it was a bit of a personnel miscue by the Jets in spending a top 5 pick on a player who was changing position. Putting a power-rush 4-3 end in coverage was doomed from the start. Gholston's probably one of the strongest guys in the NFL so I think he should accumulate greater success this season at defensive end.

This guy has none.....just no desire to be great at all.

mike0n0jake0inc 1 year ago
I had doubts about Gholston going into that draft because so much of his talent came from athletic ability alone. But in the NFL you need more than that. I was hoping McFadden would fall to the Jets. I still believe McFadden will be good, just as soon as he leaves the Raiders. Gholston you wasted our 6th overall pick. josh77star 1 year ago
ECLRG10 1 year ago
@ECLRG10 ill just go over last years Ohio State picks; Malcolm Jenkins, just won a Superbowl with the Saints, who are very excited about his potential. Beanie Wells, arguably should have been offensive rookie of the year and James Laurinaitis who finished second or third for defensive rookie of the year with St. Louis. Ohio State has just as many good NFL players as other top tier schools.
buckeyesports1 1 year ago
@buckeyesports1 beanie wells is not arguably the bets offensive rookie. He may not even be top 10 offensive rookie. He fumbles way too much.
destrilogy 1 year ago
Jarrett and Leinert are busts, no denying that. Other than this year in which he was hurt, Tatupu has been great each year he's been in the league. Now let's look at the USC players that you decided not to mention. Polamalu: Arguably the best safety in the league next to Ed Reed. Brian Cushing just won rookie defensive player of the year. Clay Matthews had a great year for GB. Steve Smith was 2nd in the league in receptions and 8th in reception yards. That is just a small sample. Shall I go on?
ECLRG10 1 year ago
Youre talking out of your ass now. First, you compare an entire conference, the Big Ten, to one college football team, USC. Bush is a very good third down back, punt returner, receiver. Never was a guy who could break tackles. White is an average running back. But really, how many Big Ten running backs have been better than average lately? Jarrett has been with a quarterback who wouldnt throw him the ball. Actually, Delhomme threw the ball more to the opposition than his own team.

Chris Gamble is not an avg CB. Hes a top 10 CB for sure, it might not be in y'all eyes, but hes been consistent since coming in the league in 2004.
He only had 1 bad season in his 6 yr career, due to lack of a pass rush by the Panthers and a broken hand in 07.
Did Nick M made the All Pro/Pro Bowl this yr? To me,hes the best center in the game. His been amazing throughout his whole career.

Gholston could be God Like if he loved football.

ECLRG10 2 years ago
@jake78

@00tonytone
