I've got the Jackson at 1:35. I bought it when I was a young prepubertal without knowledge of life because I liked the spikes. Now, I'm sorry: it sounds bad and I doesn't suit me. I think you're in your guitarist's youth. It'll pass. You'll also be able to listen better songs, once healed.

That said, I admit that the transparent bass was not lacking in charm.

What really matters, what *really* matters is the person playing the guitar. Second to that would be the *sound* of the guitar--including the aspects that affect the sound (ie: the material and finish).

If you can play guitar really well, and the music sounds great, that's all you should need. If it looks nice, that's good too.

Thing is, some of these "cool guitars" that are made of wierd things or in crazy shapes sacrifice some of the sound to do so.
