The basis for the authority of the Catholic Church to grant indulgences is Matthew 16:19 and 18:18. These verses give the leaders of the Church the power to allow or forbid for the good of the Church, which is the body of Jesus Christ and of which Christ is the head. An indulgence is the result of the Churchs pleading with God to spare a member of the Church from the purification that comes as a result of sin that has been forgiven.
In the Catholic Church, the sacrament of Penance consists of three parts: contritio, confessio and satisfactio.
Contritio is in fact repentance as Protestant theologians understand it, i.e. love of God causing sorrow for sins committed, and long before the Reformation the schoolmen debated the question whether complete "contrition" was or was not in itself sufficient to obtain the Divine pardon.
Penance (satisfactio) is not part of the "forgiving" process because it comes after one has already been forgiven. Penance is merely a way to make amends for past wrongs.
In special cases, (such as with mortal sins), confession is required, as the grace of God is understood to be dead within such a person. In fact, the reception of the Eucharist is enough to forgive somebody of a venial sin (but not mortal sins).
That was not the Catholic Church that did that to our people, that was the Spaniards acting outside of the Church's morals. The Church never approved the level of force they used, and it has repeatedly apologized for unfolded.
There was one good thing that came from the Spaniards: Catholicism. Thank God we were all able to see the light amid all the darkness!
Now stop insulting Jesus Christ by calling his House evil, or I will destroy all of your comments and block you.
Please do not use my name. Simply call me "September." We are not on well enough terms for you to call me by name.
For your information, I am Mexican, so I know about Catholicism in Mexico and I can say you are a liar.
It is against the Church to pay for indulgences. The charge for a Mass costs no more than $5, and even that is optional! We are not obliged to give any tithe.
I am from the United States of America, but I travel to Mexico often and visit family there.
The money does NOT reduce your time in purgatory; that is a misconception. It is the act of kindness in giving to a worthy cause which merits an indulgence. Reading the Bible, praying, doing good works, etc.
The abuses of the Church have never been recognized as true indulgences. They did not count if they were purchased. That doesn't prove indulgences wrong. Several aspects of the Christianity have been abused, yet it remains true.
September18: I don`t care if there is an ecumenical decree or not. I lived through the time when indulgences could be bought with CASH, before world war 2, in Europe.
I don't care what you experienced. The selling of indulgences has never been a part of the faith.
So if that happened to you, then it must have been some phony priests or priests that didn't know what the Church taught.
In 1567 Pope Pius V canceled all grants of indulgences involving any fees or other financial transactions. This act proved the Church's seriousness about removing abuses from indulgences.
SeptemberCatholic18: Your comment proves, that the practice of "selling indulgences" existed. Why would the papacy make a decree banning it, if it didn`t exist.
I apreciate your gesture and believe sincere catholic believers are born again. That being said I regret pointing out that the abuse of indulgenses is a historical fact. It is the reason Martin Luther posted the his 95 thesis.
Indulgences are not confined to the Catholic Church. You don't have to be Catholic to repair the damage you've done because of a sin.
So yes, you can make expiations for the temporal effects of a sin so long as you have already asked God for the forgiveness of that sin and make a commitment to not do it again.
Indulgences are not restricted from people, just like baptism, forgiveness, marriage, and other graces of God are not confined to the Catholic Church.
I like this video. I realy did. Perhaps non Catholic Christendom needs to be taught what the Catholic doctrines realy are. I've had severam meeting with Catholic priests over many issues and they refute many such myths. What is the 9'th commandment?
The problem is, is that you have Priests whom propagate these same myths. I know many of them. However, as a believer, even though I am not Catholic, I embrace my Catholic bretheren.
I'm glad to hear it. Of course, once in a while, a priest or pastor, deacon or minister will go wrong here or there. But the Church itself teaches one thing.
You are more likely to get an accurate depiction of the Catholic Church from looking at the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), not by looking at fallible men.
Also, the Bible itself is the prevailing source for all of our doctrines. That would also be a good place to look for a depiction of the Church.

Not a fixed number of days in purgatory but definitely a shortening of this scrubbing process.
Forgive us our traspasses as we forgive those who traspassed against us.

People have bought indulgences and are now reported as abuses by the catholic church.
So it isnt a myth.

The temporal effects include purgatory.
The time of scrubbing to make you worthy to enter heaven.
How does a monetary gift scrub you.
or
Are you scrubbed harder in a shorter period of time.
I am a catholic and a protestant.

Obviously you did not watch the video; otherwise you'd see just how Biblical it is.
As for the attack on the Church: the Church never sold indulgences. I specifically mentioned this as one of the 7 myths of indulgences.

SeptemberCatholic18: Well sir, then you are just misinformed. It`s not a myth at all. I have lived throught it.

Show me the ecumenical council that decreed that indulgences can be purchased with money.
The Church is not allowed to do anything as drastic as you claim unless it is ecumenically approved. So show me the document.
Also, go to the link on the side that disproves these myths, and tell me how you respond to the explanation.

Because although the Church was indeed NOT selling indulgences, there were some phony priests who claimed that you could buy them.
So the Church had to step in an make all of those fake indulgences officially null and void.

Then why did Luthur post the 99 theses?
DryBONESreborn 3 years ago
Actually, it was the Ninety-Five Thesis.
Luther was right to be concerned about the opinions he mentioned in his thesis, for none of them were true or corresponded to the Church's teaching.
He was basically arguing against the misconceptions of indulgences, thinking that he was arguing against the true doctrine of indulgences itself.
Basically, Martin was a little confused in regards to what the Church really taught.
I'll send you a link via youtube message.

I'm afraid Luther was confused about the concept of indulgences.
In those times, there were several misconceptions about indulgences by the Catholic people themselves.
Luther was refuting those misconceptions, thinking they were what the Church really taught.
I will send you a link via a youtube message with a link about Luther and indulgences.

Will they do the same for me? Or will they consider me as an apostate because I walked away from the Catholic church and became non-denominational?
