Never thought I would say this about filler but G8 was awesome! It develops the marines into a sympathetic force and it's hilarious while staying in the bounds of the OP universe. It really didn't feel like a filler. The new characters are likable and funny and the enemy doesn't rely on some random DF but intelligence. They really should use these characters (Drake, Jonathan etc) in some upcoming filler again cause I thought they were great.
Lately, it just seems "sex appeal" is the MAIN point of manga nowadays. (Honestly, I'm looking more forward to NICK's second Avatar series, The Legend of Korra.) I guess it does ease my mind knowing Kishimoto just wants to FINISH 'Naruto' so he can move onto his next idea, & Bleach's author, Tite Kubo, once suffered a mental breakdown in the past, which is why his previous manga, Zombie Powder, came to an abrupt end.
@worldends08 I don't mean it's good Kubo suffered a mental breakdown. I'm just saying I may have a better understanding why the chapters/story tend to drag on for so LONG. (Earlier this year, Ichigo met Ginjo & now...we're passed that time well-spent, I guess. (I'm speaking for the Bleachtards.)
@imthewalrus009 Honestly, I liked the filler before Thriller Park. Not only did we catch Franky in filler action, but we got the FIRST look at the submarine before Oda showed it in action in the manga.
@TheSlickAndroid In my book, this is one of many factors that proves One Piece is DBZ's successor. (Of course, I never knew about fillers, b/c I didn't follow the DBZ manga. I just enjoyed what I watched.)
@worldends08 so true. DragonBall set a standard for most, if not all shonen manga to come. One Piece has gone above and beyond that. its inspired by the best qualities of the DB franchise, while also staying true to itself, and focusing more on story and characters instead of just action all the time(something that completely overshadowed the more fun aspects of Dragonball later on). most story arcs in One Piece aren't longer than they need to be. Luffy is more likeable than Goku.
@TheSlickAndroid They both hold a respective spot in my nerdy heart, along with the other, somewhat disappointing Shonen series. One aspect I love about One Piece: you don't have to be "emo" to be considered badass - or "hot" in the fangirls' opinions.
@worldends08 Don't get me wrong, I still love Dragonball and Dragonball Z. Both are big parts of my childhood (along with other things like Harry Potter, which is the best book series I've read yet). Its just that I enjoy Dragonball more. One Piece has a excellent balance of lighthearted fun, with story and action.
and yeah, even the most bizarre looking and/or ugly characters in this show are popular and beloved, something kinda rare in most other Shonen mangas.
@TheSlickAndroid I know what you mean about Dragonball. (To quote Vegeta from TFS episode 26: Power levels are bullsh*t!) I, for one, am passed the stage when all I cared about was the main character; everyone should have the chance.
@worldends08 Thats something I REALLY hated about DBZ. once Z started, every supporting character from Dragonball became horrendously useless to the point of irrelevancy. And I got tired of Goku always being the strongest and all of the main characters having to depend so heavily on him all the time. I would have loved to see someone other than Goku take down the villain. It doesn't help that almost all the "supporting characters" had WAY more character development than him.
@TheSlickAndroid That "irrelevancy" is what made give up on Naruto - and Bleach - ENTIRELY. (One's more focused on the deuteragonist, the secondary main character whose clan's motto must be "Anything you can do, I CAN DO BETTER!!" Meanwhile, the other series could care less about anyone besides the main character & it's poorly recycled story arcs.)
@worldends08 I know right? Naruto barely gives any attention to the supporting characters and instead focuses on Sasuke,a character whose entire backstory has consumed the plot, and that really hurts the show, considering the strongest thing about Naruto was its supporting cast. and I find Bleach to be very boring and, like you pointed out, repetitive. and Ichigos' friends (except for Orihime) are pushed to the side to give more spotlight to the soul reapers.

@worldends08 Yeah! And they're not short and worthless like Naruto's filler.

@worldends08 this was the first filler arc that I genuinely enjoyed as much as the canon material.

I love how the individual marines fear pirates so much just to have Luffy fool them with a 5 year old's prank.
