It's great that the White House hosted a classical music event. It must have been special for the kids and performers to take part. Too bad they didn't play any pieces besides Yankee Doodle Dandy that were written by American composers-maybe even a contemporary piece to demonstrate classical music in this country is alive and developing. Not just dusty old pieces from long ago. Still, the performers acquitted themselves well and seemed to have a good time.

Beethoven's Grosse Fugue isn't exactly peaceful. Nor is Shostakovich's eighth quartet, or Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima. All are masterpieces.
