When I was there for the war, I hated that place. Now, I've been back a few times and I can see how pretty it is. Before I went back all I remembered was the elephant grass, rain, and how hot it was. I lost my first love there because of the war, I still miss her, your first love always holds a special place.
As of three years ago when I shot the video, you could take a Vietnamese motorbike into Laos and Thailand but you need the correct paperwork (registration -- if not in your name, then they may ask for a bill of sale or proof it's yours). Cambodia was a "no go" for Vietnamese motorbikes --- something about import/export laws. Hope that helps :) Happy trails!
great video, tomorrow ill be in Hanoi, i think i am going to have to get the motorbike with my buddy, do u know if they let foreigners take vehicles out of the country?
@nyhokie1 We just used a little old canon powershot still camera and windows movie maker to put it together. Nowadays I use a Canon G9 (better video quality) and Sony Vegas to edit (more tools).
You can rent a bike in Hanoi, sure -- used to be about $5 a day I think. We bought ours for about $200 (plus $200 in repairs) and drove it to Thailand.
I found this video a in 2008, i watch it when i'm feeling down. Curious what became of the couple? This is a such a dated clip i doubt either looks at the replies. Makes me eager to do a moto trip of vietnam....
That's funny.. Here I am checking my email in an internet cafe in Padangbai, Bali sitting next to Kim (it's her and I in the video) and we've just started our motorbike adventure around Indonesia.
Thanks for the kind words about the video -- we had a great time making it back in 2007... I'm sure there'll be some new videos of Indonesia soon.
But I'm curious: is this one of Kim's friends, joking around? :)
@deltaboilermaker No i'm not one of Kim's friends, just stumbled across your clip. Looks like a great adventure to a working stiff like me, want to replicate if possible some day. Hey are you all Canadians by chance? My girlfriend believes you two are from Europe but for some reason I figured Canada. Thanks for capturing/posting your trip.
Really? It sounds like you had fun! I've vacation in Vietnam before. It's beautiful. But there are too many people. It's crowded and overpopulated. I also vacation in Laos. It's my favorite place because it's quiet and secluded. You can relax in peace without seeing other people for miles!
Wow - fantastic video and great music selections, too. My husband and I just returned from Vietnam. We also took a motorbike tour, but I crashed after the first day, so had to change plans. Saw many of the same sites - Halong Bay was awesome.
I grew up in VN during the terrible war. I haven't been back for 29 years. This video is wonderfull, it brought back so many memories. thanks for sharing.
this video truly captures the wonders of vietnam. i was born there myself and have been back. i know how beautiful it is there, but all i have are stories to tell my american friends. thanks to this video clip, i can now give them a visual description.
It's your big brother David here! Dad sent me the link to your videos. You look great! You & Michael look like you're having the time of your lives! I hope we can catch up soon, or even better see each other again! Take care, God Bless, and keep having a blast! I miss you all!
Hey man, glad to see you are adventuring. I can't wait to get out and travel again, it's been less than a year and I miss it tonnes. Can't wait to here your stories.
Aw! You guys, this made me teary a little bit. Mike, excellent job with picking a song with water noises at the start of the rowing part. I know you're proud of yourself for that!
This video captures exactly what it feels like. I love you guys. Sniff!
Mega. Cool. As per usual, I'm still curious as to whether or not you are actually doing any work over there, or perhaps you've won lotto or robbed a bank, and are living the good life. Either way, good job!

I am glad I went back.
Best wishes to you.
