@windstorm1000 Mahler said that he wanted a sound like an axe blow. It's only called a hammer because it looks like one rather than sounds like one. Personally, I don't think a ringing type sound would be as effective in this symphony.
@fcmilsweeper9 It is the fourth and final movement from the sixth symphony. There are three hammer stroke. In fact Mahler was superstitious and removed the third stroke but it was restored after his death

why isn't a metal hammer used? it would have a more ringing louder tone. the wood one is too 'thud'
