I used the redrock m2. its a 35mm adapter that allows you to use 35mm lenses in front your camera. depending on your budget i would look at the canon 7d , 60d. or canon t3i they by far have better image quality and you can still get the same depth of field "film look" as the agdvx100b. Just buy the 7d or others body and a fast lens. like the canon 50mm f1.8 for $100 then u have a full hd cam. the agdvx100b is not hd. Plus learn 3 point lighting that will help your stuff stand out as "PRO"
Hey Thanks for the kind remarks. Ya the dvx is way ahead of its time. Still going strong in most settings. Unfortunately i have moved up to the 7d and 5d canon cameras to make my rig more portable. So i don't remember the settings. But a good camera in the hands of someone that knows lighting and composition combined with good acting can make a scene look and flow nicely.
awesome stuff. i love the image look and feel, looks like it was shot on a high end HD camera. just proves that the trusty DVX can still go strong. i have 2 , and still love them.
hats off to you. care to share your settings on the dvx
I used Nikon primes for this shoot. a 50mm f 1.4 , a 105mm f2.5 and a 135mm f 2.8. A longer the lens like the 135mm will give you a "compressed" film look with some nice depth of field potential for rack focusing. the lighting was your basic 3 point lighting with a light just behind and above the character. Mainly 250w, 1k would be to much in a smal space. Well the upgraded glass was more "crisp" and had better light transmission. I have upgraded since this shoot to a canon 7d w/ nikon primes.
The depth of field looks very good in the establishing shot (The first one with the character sitting with his hands together). I'm guessing that was the 50mm? or were you just further away and zooming in with the 125mm?
Thank you so so much. I really admire your technique and style.
What type of lens or lenses did you use? Im looking to do something very similar in the future....ie. in a room with shots like this. So I would very much like to know what zoom level lens you used for your shoot?
You also have some very interesting and nice lighting.Did you use plain white lighhts and then do some colour correction during editing or use some special lighting?
Finally, do you think it wouldve been alot worse without the upgrade glass?
Hey I as well have a dvx100b and i'm looking for a good 35mm adapter. What Redrock adapter are you using in this trailer? And also what is the cost of it? And by the way really good trailer.
the they "Redrock" introduced a new "brighter" ground glass when they brought out the encore but offered the new glass as an upgrade for the older m2 so the older m2 housing but new upgraded glass
Hey! This is an excellent video! Really show's what's capable with the dvx100b and redrock. And it's great seeing that you are willing to reply to peoples questions.
I'm looking to buy a dvx100b and the m2 indie bundle soon. I'm dropping a lot of money. Is it worth it? Or should I go with a HD or the Canon 5d Mark II instead?
first before you spend a lot of money on equipment.. what are your goals. Do you want to b a indie film maker or a photographer or?? if you want to do indie films or movies i would go with the hvx200 and a redrock. if you want to do both photography and indie stuff go with the markII.
But you really need to know lenses and framing and lighting to get the movie look and feel and the best way to get that is practice practice practice.
My goal is to do narratives and music videos. Also, some documentary type stuff. I can't afford the hvx200 and a redrock. I could afford a dvx100b and redrock though. It's either that or an HVX200 by itself. The HVX, honestly, has me scared off with the p2 card. I'm looking for whats best to invest in. Do you think the 100b is getting outdated? your video looks excellent though! I want to invest in equipment I can practice with and learn with. Again, thanks for responding!
doing music videos for the web or distribution or? i have both a hvx and a dvx100b both are great cameras i agree the hvx was a chunk of dollars to spend but its well worth it. it will be useful for years as far as quality and options but the dvx are awesome to. good luck and remember what ever you get dont let it collect dust on a shelf get out there learn, shoot and impress others good luck show me your stuff when you get going id love 2 help.
Well, mostly for the web and to develop a reel. It seems like the DVX and redrock will be great to learn with. Once I get things going, I will definitely ask for some advice from you. Thank you for being so helpful! Great to get tips from a talented person who knows what he's doing. Thanks again
hey i am just learning to shoot on my m2 adapter. i am just curious what settings you captured your footage at and what settings you exported with.. when i export it isn't nearly as crispy looking as this and ihave been playing with the compression for a bit now and havn't found a way to get it this crispy yet
What kind of camera do u use? I used a dvx100b with a 50mm nikon for the close up stuff a 105 & a 135mm for the longer dof shots like at the beginning of this sequence 24pa @ 120 shuttr speed the lens was at 2.8 and the camera was open
just imported it into final cut 5 with pull down 2 3 3 2 the redrock does cause some graininess in low light situations thou
I'm trying to become a self taught director like sam raimi and quentin tarantino and I was wondering once I hire a DP for my film would he already know what lenses to use because lenses and mm is french to me.
ya any experienced dp will know al that, but you have to know what you want to see. he can do all the fancy camera tricks but he will only film what you tell him. i suggest getting a camera and practicing framing. quick takes for action wide shots etc
long takes for dramatic scenes use a dolly to descibe emotion push towards a person to show power pull away to show weakness any way practice makes perfect get out there and do it dont be afraid to do the same take 10 times or more
Thanks yep a dvx100b sd if you r shooting for the small screen its more than enough. for the big screen... get a good publisher that can uprez your footage.
just remember 1 thing get lenses that are f2.8 or lower no higher than f 3 and preferably prime lenses like fixed 135mm or fixed 50mm have a zoom hand for snap zoom action stuff like an 80-200mm also keep in mind the longer the lens the more hollywood it will look but also keep in mind you need a script and some descent actors or at least know how to direct.

Hey everything looked AMAZING, your lighting was absolutely perfect.
However one thing, i felt that the second character walking in was a bit off...too much shadows? you could have just cut the walk-in out and just tilted up to when hes standing over him
Anyways..what do the various nikon lenses do? the 50mm and the 105mm
Great lighting, great look, well done pal....I have a DVX100 myself, still love that camera.

I used Final cut studio. And "Color" for the color correction. I also used the 3 way color correction in final cut.

Sorry what is 2335 is compression rate or what?
steliber 2 years ago
sorry it was using the 2.3.3.2 pull down removal. That gives you 24 individual frames instead of a few interlaced frames
that the non pulldown will give but be sure to shoot at 24pa
in the camera
prarierose7 2 years ago
and how u do that in final cut pro?
steliber 2 years ago
when importing footage into "fcp" use the pull down removal
in the capture settings in the log and capture window

okay, what happens if there above f3?
mullensk8r7 2 years ago
if you get any thing above a f3 you will need a lot more light if your outdoors its ok but indoors not so much.
prarierose7 2 years ago
the 50mm is for wider shots to establish the setting
or closeups to pull nice dof shots.
the 105mm or better a 135mm is a longer lens to get the narrow character driver look plus a nice dof look

i see, im looking to invest in the whole m2 encore package. when it comes to lenses im a noob
