I Can tell that Country Joe was trippin' his Balls of Onstage,I am suprised that he was able enough to get it together to perform. I can spot a trippin' person from a mile away!
I read Barry Miles' book "Hippie" and did you know they were booked to perform on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in February 1968? But when the producers and the CBS executives heard about their notorious chat to the crowd ("Gimme-a-F, Gimme-a-U, etc.) they dropped them. Even worse, it happened in New York the day before they were supposed to appear! And as Miles pointed out, Country Joe and The Fish blew their chance to become a mainstream Rock and Roll group.
Please, no diss to the Fish... I saw Joe and his gang at the Beckman Auditorium in 1972 and they were just wonderful. But, as a dyed in the wool Airplane and Dead fan as well, I think those two bands definitely outshone the Fish on several levels. Nevertheless, this track and the live video is a welcome treat, and thanks very much for it! GIMME AN F!... GIMME A U....
"In contrast to Jefferson Airplane, who were at their best working within conventional song structures, and the Grateful Dead, who hadn't quite yet figured out how to transpose their music to the recording studio,"
Huh? What? I don't think the Jefferson Airplane's songs could ever be called "conventional" -- Eskimo Day Blues? Cushingura? The House at Pooneil Corners? all from 1968 -- and the Grateful Dead *started* their album catalog with studio work if I am not mistaken.
Y'know, it's funny, but when I went to Monterey with Jack and his business partner, Thomas Thomas (they had a jewelry booth on the grounds), I was there for four days and nights and didn't realize that I'd seen Barry and "Tex Adams" perform there. Later on, after meeting him in the city and I started playing with he and Peter Albin (bass) and Harold Aceves (drums) pre "Dinosaurs", did we discover we'd probably crossed paths at the Troubadour when I played with Penny Nichols, Mary McCaslin. ""
I see Barry (the Fish) around here sometimes. He is a public defender in Yolo County, north of Davis and Sacramento. Saw him live in 1967 and he was great as was the group. What other group was advocating taking LSD and smoking pot in their recorded songs? Kudos to Vanguard Records for allowing it.
daubreyjaneweirdsley you're absolutely right, I would like to say all those things with your words...There's usually a misunderstanding between the sixties ending music and style and the early seventies (ok for the bad taste, too....!) I definitively live through the first era....Friendly.
Thank you for your kind words Monsieur Sixtiesrecords. Having lived in Paris for short time many years ago, i have always found France its people its cultural a source of inspiration. And now my eldest daughter lives in Paris and is a confirmed Francophile. Like France i have always loved and sort inspiration from the American 60's West Coast CounterCulture, its art and especially its music. Sadly it now seems to be a lost arcadian age that won't come again.
When I picked up ELECTRIC MUSIC for the MIND and BODY when the LP first came out I was amazed that there was not a bad cut on it. They're touring occasionally now but without Barry. The shows are OK but Barry's leads, fills, and vocals are sorely missed.
@Lisior98 The riff they play no the verses is in E. Then the refrain is in B major and A major (back and forth). The rest you have to figure out yourself.

Shit they were all on something. barry looks like a giant with that sg compared to angus young an his sg. joe looks really stoned and a lil scary with that shit painted on his face. that guy swayin in the audience with his eyes closed an flower petals in his hand that fucker is tripping.
great footage! barry melton is the man. no one onstage is as high as the guy at 3:30. whew! check out carlos santana @ woodstock for another great musician zonked on acid
COUNTRY JOE AND BARRY MELTON AND CHICKEN HIRSCH WERE ALL ON STP --- I COPPED SOME AND WENT BACK TO THE HAIGHT AND WAS TRIPPIN FOR 3 DAYS , ALL I REMEMBER WAS THAT LAUGHING SAL THING OUT AT PLAYLAND AT THE BEACH , WHAT A TRIP ??
The counter-culture was counter-intelligence mass mind-patterning - part of a constant war against all culture- also as a series of experiments to find out how these newly programmed/disassociated groups begin to achieve objectives and how to control them. To split, divide and refine. Alchemical and mystical, the Lords, and We, the New Creatures inhabit a semiotics of annihilating opposites.
@pdorn777 you can definitely tell country joe himself is at least on something. just look at his eyes. matter fact, peter albin of big brother has the same look in his eyes and seemed to be tripping out hardcore. i wonder if he did stp (dom) too.
One of the ironies of the time is that Country Joe was one of the few veterans that sang and had a group. He is still around and you should look up his song about Baghdad.
So that is Mama Cass. I wasn't sure, but since you've seen the whole movie, I tend to trust you.
By the way, the resolution and color of the film is so clear. It's doesn't seem as if it's artifact from 43 years ago(putting out of mind, of course, the clothes- and the glorious music- who says certain eras aren't better than others?)
@martbook Thanks, Mart. Bruce Johnson, eh? Was in the Beach Boys by that point? I think Brian had given up performing live by that time. Anyway, it's been 37 years or so since Cass left us. What a talented woman. What a terrible shame.
@martbook I'm not sure if I'm posting this twice- but here goes.
Thanks, Mart for the information. Was Bruce Johnson in the band by that time? I do think Brian Wilson had given up performing by that point. It's been, what?, 37 years or so since Cass left us. What a talented woman. What a terrible shame
Check out the gal at 1 56 & the guy at 3 37. A little touch of "window pane" acid & they are in a Different World! Yes its happened to some of us as well!
who cares if that was mama cass or not, they were probably the most trendy band on the bill on that festival and shes not even interested in the band playing at the moment even though theyre far better like the rest of thebands then the mammas and the papas, but thats just my opinion.. :-)
Is that my friend Patty at 1:56 with the flowers in her pigtails??? Me thinks so... she was with Country Joe around that time... and I was with Nelson. And we were all there...
@capetown99 I have the belief that all the good music that was the 60's and 70's is still made and popular in the world, it's just it doesn't exist in the US anymore. It strongly resides in Australia now.
I delight listening this 70´s sound (with very basical conditions) and the mystical view of those people. I wish today young people could have the half part. And it´s true, girls were more beautiful than today and they didn´t make up theirselves too much. I love this decade, but I was 5 years old only and I remember young people around me, were sensational.
@LadyJane1965 My dear Lady Jane this most definitely not the "70's sound",but late 60's(1967 to be precise) West Coast Acid Rock at its finest. Sorry to be such a pedant. My mother who was one of those Pre-Raphaelite, Marianne Faithful inspired hippie beauties; y'know all long black velvet dresses, Botticelli hair & silver bangles nearly choked on her glass of bordeaux when she read your comment. Huge distinction to be made between 60's hippie cool and 70's bad taste in clothes and music.
@daubreyjaneweirdsley yeah, I remember this first from it getting played on the air in 1967 or 8, then from the monterrey pop movie which I saw a number of years later. A far cry from the '70's, whatever one may think of them. Your mother and I are probably of the same vintage though I was never really a hippie.
@jacstraw8.... Barry Melton is a sublime underrated guitarist and should be up there in Acid Rock guitar player pantheon with Garcia, Kaukonen, Krieger, Cipollina. He's also made some rather good solo albums when he left CJ & Fish in the early 70's. True to his Counter Culture roots Melton became a liberal/left lawyer and still plays up and down the West Coast to this day. Hope that helps. Google the rest.
Possibly some music fan unplugged the wrong microphone - disturbed at the 'sick wibbling' emanating from the stage. Fumbling forward, rivulets of undulations frothing around - trying to find the stage: "Good God man - what's that freaking WIBBLING. It hurts so BAD baby" he may have whimpered possibly.
Finding the source of the sick rubber band tone, he may have lunged desperately at the microphone, only to kick Joe's mic to stage left.
@sleakitweasel And thanks to me having to write that letter of apology I missed the only bit I actually watch the video for: the girl between 1:16 and 1:19.
I like the Quicksilver vid @ Monterey, playing "All I ever wanted to do". The cameraman at this gig had an eye for the 'chickies' apparently. Perversely, the guitarist also was fond of the wibbling too!
They had folding chairs. It was AWESOME!!!!!!! At this time I was outside the stadium and was into the light on white lightining. There was some STUFF going around that was called OSB, NOT GOOD. DO NOT TAke THE BROWN osb! Whatever. Anyway...It was really a mind experience that has never left me. THANKS!

Who is Cass talking to in the audience. They appear together many times throughout the film? Is it Barry Maguire?
willruddock 1 year ago
@willruddock

@capetown99 I have the belief that all the good music that was the 60's and 70's is still made and popular in the world, it's just it doesn't exist in the US anymore. It strongly resides in Australia now.

tutlek222 11 months ago
I delight listening this 70´s sound (with very basical conditions) and the mystical view of those people. I wish today young people could have the half part. And it´s true, girls were more beautiful than today and they didn´t make up theirselves too much. I love this decade, but I was 5 years old only and I remember young people around me, were sensational.
LadyJane1965 1 year ago
@LadyJane1965 My dear Lady Jane this most definitely not the "70's sound",but late 60's(1967 to be precise) West Coast Acid Rock at its finest. Sorry to be such a pedant. My mother who was one of those Pre-Raphaelite, Marianne Faithful inspired hippie beauties; y'know all long black velvet dresses, Botticelli hair & silver bangles nearly choked on her glass of bordeaux when she read your comment. Huge distinction to be made between 60's hippie cool and 70's bad taste in clothes and music.
daubreyjaneweirdsley 1 year ago 35
@daubreyjaneweirdsley yeah, I remember this first from it getting played on the air in 1967 or 8, then from the monterrey pop movie which I saw a number of years later. A far cry from the '70's, whatever one may think of them. Your mother and I are probably of the same vintage though I was never really a hippie.

Who is this guitarest, he sounds just like Jerry??
jacstraw8 10 months ago
@jacstraw8.... Barry Melton is a sublime underrated guitarist and should be up there in Acid Rock guitar player pantheon with Garcia, Kaukonen, Krieger, Cipollina. He's also made some rather good solo albums when he left CJ & Fish in the early 70's. True to his Counter Culture roots Melton became a liberal/left lawyer and still plays up and down the West Coast to this day. Hope that helps. Google the rest.

@YourMumGetsItAnally
This may be the reason...

I like the Quicksilver vid @ Monterey, playing "All I ever wanted to do". The cameraman at this gig had an eye for the 'chickies' apparently. Perversely, the guitarist also was fond of the wibbling too!
