  • FOR GADDS SAKE I HOPE THAT ABOUT COVERS IT ALL! HA HA HA HA HEH HEH HEH!

  • gadd is a legend!

  • his tattoos would kick the shit out of travis barker

  • 0:00 — 0:02 Dream Theater — As I am.

  • does anyone from what song is taken the groove at the beginning (at the titles) and if it is possible to find a video in which he demonstrate it??

  • Travis who?

  • infamous? Really? How so?

  • Why would it be "infamous"?

  • @themoaspecial because for such a long time no one knew wtf he was doing and it would drive you crazy trying to figure it out

  • @thepolice911copeland Ahh I see what you mean.

  • GADD... DRUMMING GOD

  • where is the fill in the opening/closing hudson promo from? ive always wondered

  • effortless talent -perfection

  • Damn... This guy's incredible

  • In the beginning the earth was without sound, and void; and deafness was

upon the face of the Earth And the Spirit of Gadd moved upon

    the face of the skins.

And Gadd said, Let there be groove: and there was groove.

And Gadd heard the groove, that it was good: and Gadd removed the

void from the deafness and on no day, Gadd rested.

  • Gadd is better technically, but travis barker has more feel and passion

  • @xvizionsx fuck off with your travis barker

  • @xHUTSEx its true that someone like travis barker does not even close to match up with the drummers of steve gadds stature . but different people do different things well . but yeah. travis barker is nothing compared to steve gadd.

  • @xvizionsx I like Travis. I grew up in the pop punk era idolizing him. Travis a good showman. Steve Gadd is on another planet, and he has as much, if not more passion for music than any drummer in the business.

  • @xvizionsx As much as Travis Barker aint that bad hes not someone to be talked about on this video especially since it's a completely different style.

  • I like how As I Am starts in the beginning haha

  • Saw him at a clinic. what an awesome clinic that was

  • I'm better that travis barker and I've only been playing for 8 years.

  • @MrWalkerds no one cares

  • @MrWalkerds i was better than travis barker after playing for 3...he sucks. i will never be able to touch gadd.

  • @fbskier20 right on

  • HEY, COULD ANYONE PLEASE GIVE ME THE STICKING PATTERN? I tried following but i just can't.. I also tried writing them down. just a simple L(left) and R(right) will do.. Ex. LRLL LRLL LRL thingy.. that would be really helpful. thank u so much.

  • @samsoft9390 I think the first sticking pattern is actually the same as the most common latin rythm which is TOGETHER RLRR LRLR RLRR LR

  • why the fuck i can't watch a drum video without seeing travis barker everywhere??? XD

  • wow!

  • hes stunning.. everything is so simple for him and amazing for the rest of us mere mortals.

  • Travis Barker is something you say when you sneeze

  • big gadd big the4thguy

  • Drum lesson from the master himself.

  • @finnmick96 Sobi on parempi....

  • @AndreaTaroppio True, I wasn't making a point, just whenever I mention him to other people they say nothing but bad things about his attitude, feck it thou, he's a great drummer!!

  • He´s amazing!

  • Steve thanks for being so humble on the DVD and thus setting such a great example for all drummers out there. Between this "Late in the Evening" and "50 ways" man the complexity is golden joy to the ear. We love how technical some of your grooves are, they raise the bar to better music and challenge all worthy drummers. Rock on! Peace, and Music - - FreeTIm

  • im pretty sure hudson music stole that opening sound from the beginning of as i am by dream theater

  • I thought drummers left all this competing stuff to guitarists.

  • i love this Groove its his second finest behind Aja and the funny thing is Aja is simple yet......its not haha

  • @soundmind529 Come on respond you noob, I wanna troll your ass so fucking hard.

  • @soundmind529 If you could drum you wouldn't have responded.

  • @soundmind529 stfu you cant even drum.

  • @soundmind529 cunt

  • @soundmind529 Did you even read the last sentence? noob.

  • The adjective is famous, not infamous.

1: having a reputation of the worst kind : notoriously evil

2: causing or bringing infamy : disgraceful

3: convicted of an offense bringing infamy

None of those are appropriate to this.

  • You ca't compare steve gadd and travis barker .. they are completely different!

  • I here this guys quite a keen drummer. :P

  • THANK YOU!!!

  • hahaha throughout the whole video i was like "this is actually kinda lame..." then he put it all together at the end and all was well

  • I heard he's an asshole in real life......Is he?

  • Gadd is one of my favorite drummers - just to be clear. But all this talking about who's a greater drummer and this or that - that shit doesn't matter to musicians. Someone can be technical and know all the licks, but can you REALLY 'play' (groove) - that's what they look for. If Travis Barker can play, he can play. Gadd isn't going around fighting other drummers in tournaments to crown himself king of the hill...

You guys need to get off the ego shots and spend more time on the kit instead!

  • @Forsythe0 Amen to that

  • @Forsythe0 Well spoken!

  • That's amazing... The opening of a Dream Theater song and then... Steve Gadd.

  • even when he shows that sticking mozambique to the crowd, its soooo simple but u put a metronome to that(and remember he was just showing somone something real slow halve heartdly) and you would see he would be perfectly in sync the whole damn way

  • Lv Gadd.

  • Jeez...Mr. Gadd is a great drummer, Mr. Barker is too. Throw in Levon Helm, Elvin Jones, Mike Portnoy, Keith Moon...lets celebrate all musicians and not argue over something as stupid as who had the better one-handed triplet. My favorite drummer is Alla Rakha, the tabla player who played w/ Ravi Shankar...want to compare him to Gadd? Can't...both are simply amazing.

  • Cause it was late in the evening... and I blew that room away!

  • Travis BArker is a nice drummer but a complete hack compared to just about everyone from the jazz or fusion or even metal world.

I agree with DoubleThump. Why is he even talked about?

  • lovely sound.

  • man if you can compare barker to gadd you are obviesly some fucking half brainned 12 year old who owns a 200 dollar kit that their mom bought for them, and figures that just because he knows the name of a drummer this automatically means that his one year of drumming experience qualifies him to talk about someone as masterfull as steve gadd.

  • @illfightyou4money I dare to compare travis to gadd. Gadd is a hero with mad skills (both technical and with great feel and a wide range that plays with the best). travis is an angry monkey boy that plays allegro tempo simple 4/4 and relies heavily on his hands and plays with 3 chord simpletons. Or, i guess your right. no comparison.

  • I just got on here to check out Gadd and the first thing I see is Travis Barker's name...what the fuck? Everytime I go to check out a drummer I see his name. Yeah, he's a damn good drummer, but these guys are from totally different worlds. Barker plays in a half assed rock band, that some idiots think is punk and Gadd is a first call player for some of the world's finest musicians!! Barker is a good drummer, but I think his band sucks balls. Anyway, now I'm gonna dig this video.

  • Why does he look like Sean Connery after eating too many drummers?

  • couldnt agree with drummerkingmike more its not the fact that you can play it, its how you lay it down, and steve gadd can lay it down!!

  • @goldenchub No doubt, and i cant imagine laying it down in in front of 30,000 people much less donald fagan, paul simon, chick corea, al di mieola, james taylor or eric clapton. Can you say nerves?

  • Incredible, this man is simply amazing. He's like the perfect imitation of nature's grooves.

  • Makes it look so effortless

  • OMG this guy leaves me speechless

  • Oh my Gadd...

  • @The4thGuy Works every time...

  • how can something so simple be played so elegantly. perhaps a touch of genius helps.............

  • this guy is possessed i think:

search "Amorphic drum" ...1st video result

  • Travis is not a drummer. He is just a human being, who have two hands and can hold two pieces of wood.

  • @TheDice2008 Well, that's not entirely true, he's pretty good at punk drumming... but that's about it.

  • search: amorphic drum

    what is this technique??

  • Why does someone always bring Travis Barker into drum arguments? Steve Gadd is much better anyway, there is NO argument there.

  • Great groove!

  • R-R-L-R-R-L-R-L-R-R-L-R-R-L-R I think :/

Well thats it before he does with the variation at the end, But i think thats just with two lefts at the end?

  • travis was one of the first drummers to emphasise on hip hop beats when playing. he also introduced hip hop to drummers a lot aswell in my opinion. barker is brilliant for what he does..i've had the pleasure to see him live and he's ferociously fast. gadd, on the other hand, is what barker is going to be in another 20 - 30 years. gadd is all about synopated jazz rhythms and complicated beats. he drums with experience

  • Hip hop was around almost 30 years before Travis Barker became known. There were many drummers who incorporated hip hop into their overall style well before Travis.

  • Mozambique: The coolest rhythm pattern of drum kind.... Samba is good too, but mozambique just murders it.

  • @ParallaxDrums Hit that mozambique hand pattern over a samba foot pattern and you'll blow your load!! :-D

  • @drummerkingmike HAHA!!! I could imagine it :) Those cubans are pretty cool :p

  • @ParallaxDrums Mozambique is for emo faggots dude. Where are you going to play it? Some fucking spic bar?

  • @drummerforreal1 Dear god, i know i gave up on you in the other video but wow man.... I bet you don't even fricken know how to pronounce the word correctly. However, mozambique is widely used through a lot of fusion, jazz, and funk drummers... its a popular bell pattern. If you were SOOO GREAT, wouldn't have already known?

  • I just had my mind fucking blown...

  • And if John Bonham wouldn't recorded w/four sticks? Huh Steve?

  • i don't know why people like him, he plays the same fills over 20 years now or longer! that shit with the double-bas

  • you cant compare joey jordison or travis to a drummer like gadd< simply because the way they drum is in no way alike, just like you cant compare frank sinatra to micheal jackson, they both used a mic, but thats it, i think joey jordison is king just in his own way as gadd is, and yeah gadd is worshipped by many drummers, but dont be fooled, every metal drummer worships joey too!!

  • woah

  • whats with everyone talking about travis barker??? he cant even shit on the same toilet as steve gadd

  • @doublethumpbass89 lmao, cheers

  • @doublethumpbass89 HAHAHA, genious, so true!

  • @doublethumpbass89 its because he drums for a younger crowd, and hes very flashy. i mean look at drummer from our lady peace, VERY well rounded drummer, but i dunno his name. it doesnt matter how good u are, its how good ppl think u are. ive done shows where a guys doing insane beats that make me look like a beginner but i do a couple stick twirls drum will my arms and everyone thinks im better.... its sad but its life :P

  • @epicworld thats showmanship not talent

  • @doublethumpbass89

This is like the most true comment all over the internet... thank you!

  • @doublethumpbass89 travis barker is a good drummer. remember that. But he would agree that there is only one Gadd..the greatest.

  • @doublethumpbass89 But he has a helluva lot more tattoos

  • four thumbs up

  • His grooves are soulful and well thought out. Apparently when Paul Simon laid the bed tracks for "50 Ways", he and the producer felt that it was kind of flat and unremarkable. When they brought Gadd in, not only did he show them the great groove which Simon said, revived the piece but he gave them a small catalogue of grooves to choose from. He is an encyclopedia of grooves

  • travis barker and joey jordison can go eat some dick!

  • HA! Can't play that with traditional grip huh? :p

  • forte

  • Exactly, drummerkingmike. Anyone can play this stuff, but they'll probably sound like a robot. If you don't have groove - your out.

  • I agree. listening to one of the very best doing wot he i best at. a true master on drums. how boring... u nob

  • i was expecting zep...wtf is this>?

  • @joeglimmix

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

i was almost expecting Zep too when i saw this, then i realized it would make a great gadd-type title for a song

  • boring

  • Boring people get bored easily.

  • @Coltranized

    Genius comment...

  • @PositivelyBored Ha. Nice name.

  • BULLSHIT...

  • are u one of these drummers who consider joey as a better drummer... ?

  • hahahah no man my comment is a joke joey is not in my list at allll not even the top 20 drummers.

gadd is an awesome drummer he is number 7 in my list :).

  • oh...my mistake :P

  • @aassyr1111 I think joey is a cool drummer and I love WHAT he plays, but that doesen't mean that what he plays requires a lot of skill, thats why hes in my top ten list. because he proves that you don't have to know all those techniques and rudiments in order to play something that sounds cool. And in the all hope is gone album he uses a lot more rythmical stuff than just the regular blastbeat fast double bass stuff.

  • holy Lord

  • Freakin' delicately badass mesermizing playability

  • I always used to say, again for this video... His name wrongly pronounced / spelled as Steve Gadd but it is Steve GOD...!! What a gift for all of us from God...!! God is Great and so do the Gadd :)

  • what a genius. playing with four sticks.

  • Steve Gadd is not about obious pryotechniques.

He is more subtle than that. He makes the things look easier than they are, his rythm is absolutely perfect and that is a great accomplishment for a drummer.

( Not to forget that he is a great drums-innovator)

  • It doesn't have to be difficult to sound good

  • It's not difficult it's just awesome! ;-)

  • it's not about being able to play it....it's about being able to come up with it, hes a genius!

  • I don't understand why you think music has to be hard. It's art, FFS!

  • I think you're wrong - it is increadibly difficult. The difficulty is not in the sticking - millions of drummers could play 95% of the stuff Gadd plays... but it wouldn't sound like it does when he plays it. Thats where the real skill is, and thats why he gets the biggest gigs in the world and we dont...

  • @drummerkingmike Like :Lars Ulrich from Metallica then hehe. Not difficult to play but when you put another drummer in that place it would be way different.

  • Exactly!!...... 'sept if you put another drummer in that place it would be easier to rob their music off Napster =D

  • @drummerkingmike ABSOULTELY CORRECT nobody seems to get that feel is what breaks apart gods from really good drummers

  • @drummerkingmike

Exactly. Difficulty of drumming in order (1) emotion/feel (2) coordination- physical (3) endurance (4) speed

  • Could agree more. Well said.

  • very well said. could not agree more.

  • @drummerkingmike Bingo. Gadd's a god.

  • @drummerkingmike

I agree completely. It's the same as BB King or any blues musician especially. Some of what they play is simple.... but they make it sound godly. You can play it note for note and it will never sound as good.

  • @drummerkingmike Wow. 100% agreed. This is what I've been trying to tell drummers for the longest time. What really defines good drummers and good technique is not WHAT you hit, but HOW you hit it. I can get Gadd to play the same thing i can but he can make it sound 10x better. The way the drum/cymbal is hit has more to do with technique than anything. All these guys that are obsessed with technicality have no idea what it means to be technical.

  • @tcslick420 Yup, you got it. Not what, but how!

  • @drummerkingmike That's the truth!!!

  • @wolloolloo It's not just about how ahrd the song is to play, imagine how creative you've gotta be to come up with a groove like this, and play it with such awesome feel :)

  • @wolloolloo You have a looooottttt to learn young padewan.

  • @Thisisadodge2 and you need to fuck your ass with a screwdriver till its wide enough to put your dumbass comments in

  • @wolloolloo Frightening. Hint: drop the double bass pedal for improved playing :)

  • @wolloolloo Why all the hate and bad comments? Please give respect where respect is due, because trying to say "no disrespect but...", and then trying to say Gadd's playing is slow and thus irrelevant to you because everything should be mind numbingly fast makes you into an ass. Music isn't and never will be about being the fastest player, anyone can be fast. Go buy a metronome and bring it back to slow. If you say you have one you're using it wrong.

  • @xcorr77 go suck some ass

  • No thanks, I have other things to do. If it makes you feel any better, I checked out your vids after posting my previous comment and I think you're.. pretty good. Certainly have potential, but just be careful you practice things correctly.

  • "than" not "then" you illiterate ass.

  • @mvbeckril ik kan tenminste nog een taal spreken pijpknecht..

  • nice gadd i love it....everyone knows the alphabet.but what can you spell? haha get busy

  • the thing with gadd is he's so frickin' slippery...he can take a simple sticking pattern, move around the kit and make it sound extremely complex...it's deceptively difficult. He makes it look like child's play but really, it' is actually really hard. Another thing, is you can get so much from studying even the basics of his beats...thanks, Steve for the inspiration and the knowledge - one of the all-time greats among the league of Tony Williams, Buddy Rich, Jojo Mayer, etc.!!

  • Thats sick, sick, beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, but I wouldn't even call Travis 'good' :P

  • I finally spent/wasted my time to find out who "Travis Barker" is. Again, I don't see it. Why do they have to infiltrate every drum video as if to prove Travis Barker is a good drummer IS annoying. I don't think he's bad, just his fans have an inferiority complex. I'm not the worlds greatest drummer but I did gig with a working band for years(very little pay).I'm too jaded for hero worship.

  • Julianisdope, and I'd say you're one informed 15-year old. There's no question in my mind and any other drummer worth his "weight in drumsticks" that you can not go wrong studying the old masters on drums. Steve started at 3 yrs old. If you read articles about his uncanny ability to play precisely what a song need, stay right deep in the pocket and still have others able to distinguish when it him playing, is nothing short of amazing. Watch his "Close Up" and "In Session" videos on Google videos.

  • @julianisdope

    cool story, bro

  • @julianisdope ya dude i just saw barker with an electro artist (dj atrak) and he was drumming like a bitch...especially compared to gadd.

  • @julianisdope I wouldn't say Travis is overrated, for modern drummers, he's one of the best. I think some people have been saying that some of the stuff Gadd plays isn't too hard, and maybe it isn't to some people, but a lot of fills are based off, if not directly imitate, Gadd's creativity. Barker plays some unique grooves you just don't hear now as well as adding in Gadd fills, he's not just some flunky who picked up sticks and went fuck yeah!

  • @andyauyong well i think the thing is that any intermediate drummer can pick up a pairs of sticks and sound like travis barker with steve its not what he plays its how he plays it and i bet no one can sound like steve gadd also "simplicity is not stupidity"

  • @julianisdope him and joey jordison are the most overrated. the masters are gadd, coliuta, weckl, portnoy, peart and harrison

  • @JaskaJunior and Hamilton.

  • @JaskaJunior Your wrong in a way...THose are not the masters although in my top 10 list, except peart, hes over rated also. But where jojo mayer? hes up there, also dennis chambers? theres a few more I could name. Can't make a list and put people at the top, theres many many "masters"

  • @JaskaJunior No bernard Purdie? WHAT?!?!?!?! THe most recorded drummer in history is not in your list. Are you really a drummer? If so you should be ashamed and throw your drums into the bonfire. You are a disgrace to every drummer that has cared. A drum Nazi, a pure brown shirt is what you are. Go FY!!

Nah just kidding :D but Purdie should definatly, definatly be in anyones top 10.
