I've watched the several videos of this opera and wonder if Baltsa was in a body cast and her face frozen in pain. This is the worst acting job I've seen. Please let me know if this is an acting technique I'm not familiar with.
Act.4 The day of bullfight at Seville.Carmen appeared with bullfighter Escamillo at the front of the bullring.Bcause Don Jose hasn't lived her mind already,and Carmen began to love Escamillo.After Carmen saw Escamillo off to gate of bullring,her girl friend told to Carmen "Don Jose has come here,Be careful".But she didn't care.Suddenly Don Jose appeared in her presence.
Well, they ARE well-matched vocally. However, Carreras sounds as if he is singing off the principal of his voice rather than the interest, and spending that principal recklessly, thus making each high note an adventure. He does have some nice di Stefano touches early in the duet, but cannot sustain the anger vocally later on. Check out the EARLIER Karajan video of this production, with Bumbry and Vickers, for contrast.
I just had to watch this again, it's absolutely spellbounding...this is opera at it's best! Baltsa is such a cool Carmen with a fabulous voice, and Carreras as the desperate Don Jose. The way he gently lowers her to the floor after stabbing her, it seems like an act of love.
I'll go away with that Don Jose'under other sky ...poor Don Jose' is so tender and desperate! Only Carreras make me cry in this scene! I repeat only Carreras is Don Jose'!!
i dont like this performenr... carmen was a "refined bitch" this "carmen" could use some more expressions she is like "oh, im singing opera, i can't move" she like a statue and this "jose" its quite good but he couldn't make more because of her limited corporal expression performance
carmen its VERY a passional and some kind of perverted opera, u have to be very expressive
FABULOUS!!! I've heard this finale on a CD, but I've never seen it. Both of these performers are just terrific - Baltsa really has the pipes for this and Carreras is such a desperate Don Jose. What a super performance!

Her voice is spotless, but her face when she's singing...hehehe... Watch how her eyes get all loopy!

the first i saw Carmen at the sydney Opera was got shot and she slowly slide down the wall with blood also coming down the wall!

OMG I was thinking the exact same thing! Carmen is supposed to be smooth and seductive. This woman isn't what you'd imagine Carmen to be.
