this song is magnificent i really liked it coming from the school of Jared C. Bruce Academy i love your back ground and how you were held out of the united states because of your ethnicity or racial cause.....
Thinking about Schubert Lieder Anderson (who has a remarkable and beautifull voice) is not the first one who comes in mind. But this is very touching: the last phrase of the maiden 'und rühre mich nicht an!' and then the comforting voice of the death. Thank you very much for this contribution. Greetings from the Netherlands. RH
I ... grew up with this. It HAS to be Marian Anderson. The one and only ... singing "Der Tod und das Maedchen". Yet years since I heard it. And here it is! Above all ".... in meinen Arment sollst du SCHLAFEN": one can only bow one's head as that heavenly sound is heard. Thanks for putting it on Youtube.
No recording can fully capture the beauty of her voice. I shall never forget hearing her sing this selection during a concert. Thank you Paul for the sharing and Danetenor for the posting!
the diagram is wrong. I have the music in front of me and a piano close enough to check. The last note is a D first off. And it's the D between A110 and A220. I'm sure she could maybe go that low (although it's unhealthy for a female voice) but Ab 105 is not the note she's singing.
I don't think it was the best version. Too much vibrato to my liking. In my opinion David Daniels's version was much better. But now the best version of this song is definitely Nicholas Spanos's just posted on Plavos's channel! Just fantastic low notes and expression!
Finally one who understands musically and vocally that Death is soft and reassuring here. So she sings the low notes sweetly, without brutalizing them like most other singers.
Yes, this is the best version, indeed! Anderson's voice is not only capable of the deepest low notes, but it's also still tender and gentle, beautiful and warm, managing to sound feminine even in the lowest notes. Besides, she not only sings the thrilling notes perfectly, she also gives them great depth of meaning. The best contralto ever IMO.
Marion Anderson 's version is a miracle---gentle and goosbumpy and just shocking in the meaning to the last sound -- with the death, you watch the girl fall asleep....
Thanks for uploading Marian Anderson's wonderful rendition--I had a copy of her record back in 1950's but lost it over the years. Ms. Anderson lived in the same apartment building in Manhattan as my family did. She was a great lady as well as a great singer.
I was immensely privileged to be present at a recital given by Marian Anderson at the Royal Festival Hall in London in the 1950s. She gave me a lifelong love of lieder. A wonderful singer and a wonderful person.
No, it is between a young woman and Death. If you wish to consider Death a man, like in the English and German (der Tod) languages, well... I guess you are entitled to your interpretation. In other languages Death is feminine: "La mort" in French, "la morte" in Italian, etc.
Throughout history, there had been very few singers who could record a song/aria and it became THE "golden recording". This means no one who came before or after them could even come close to comparing with the original singer. McCormack's "Il mio tesoro" and Anderson's "Der tod und das Mädchen" are the perfect examples.
I'm inclined to agree. Certainly I've never heard another version in which Death sounds so chilling, thanks to Anderson's extraordinary voice and technique. How about any men who've sung it? Never heard Fischer-Dieskau's version, and I have read that Chaliapin recorded it, but haven't heard that one either --
Excellent performance! The best ever!Marian Anderson was called the Century's Voice thanks to her range from bass to soprano.I heard Christa Ludwig singing it very well but with the re medium. You can read her book where she talks about these issues.
I understand that her range was from D3-C6. When she was first approached about performing in an opera, she was pushed to play Aida, which she resisted, as she said "I knew I was a contralto...why Aida?"
LOL it's difficult for you and not for her, LOL, I am a tenor too but I can with that D, and even with a bariton low sharp G (her lowest note) but not lower than that, you must be a very very light tenor!
I think I may grow into a spinto voice and I can HIT the notes from C down to A maybe but I am afraid I cannot sing them with the kind of authority that she seems to command in this clip. It is somewhat otherworldly. I tried to sing along with her and I didn't do nearly as good a job (surprisingly good on the top notes but not the bottom ones.)
Im a lirico/spinto/dramatic leggiero tenor, just pace yourself and dont force it, that D though is navigable by most tenor though, no worries mate, you"ll be strong. Its not the note so much as the timbre, I can hit an F#5 and an E flat 2 and im neither a Alto or a Bass, just be patient.
OOOH!!!!!! Anderson es un barítono! FAAA!!!!
What a low D!!! jajajaja, she sounds like a bariton, suena como un barítono, amazing, I would love to hear her low A flat, If somebody has another video with lower notes, please, don't wait to put it in youtube.
I loved her voice!!! it's so beautifull!!! , for me is one the best voice of the history !!!!!!!!!!!! , it's GREAT!!!!, the best! the best!! and this lieder es relly wonderfull!!
Well she was quite reckonned for having to voices, a nice beautiful soprano voice, and that deeeeeep abyss like contralto-basso voice, and her way of changing between those to voices are, if you ask me, nicely represented in her "Deep River" and also clearly in this lied

The question is whether could she sing both the low notes and the high ones at the same era?
Many singers' voices got deeper through the age.
The Israeli singer Shoshana Damari could get as low as B-flat at old age but lost her higher notes.
