  • absoulte crap

  • gonna perform this for my speech class!:))) thanks for uploading this video .I already know the pronunciations of the places:))

  • NO NO guys that's not what this poem is about!! The poem is about how it doesn't matter what you do in your life... just who you do with it. The most simple things in life, like drinking a coke, can be an incredible experience if you do it with the right person. The artists tried so hard to create beautiful paintings and sculptures, but they never got the right person to be in their pieces. And that's all that matters in an experience; the person, not what you did.

  • I can't even remember how many times I have listened to this, I could listen to it over and over and never get tired of it, beautiful, I adore it.

  • i didnt follow this at all

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • I love this...

  • call me an Idiot but, could someone explain me what this poem is all about????? seriously i dont get anything of it at all

  • @elrockerchido It's simply someone trying to say how much he loves someone. And how paintings seem to have no faces, because he's seen that person. But it's honest. It doesn't say anything about forever, and it's not extremely romantic, it's just honest. It's life written down, that's why it's so incredible :)

  • @elrockerchido He's telling the person he loves that they are more beautiful than the most beautiful artworks in the world, that doing simple things with them - like having a coke - feels more profound than the greatest art.

  • Um dos poemas mais lindos q eu já li...I loved

  • Like I said earlier, no will-o'-the-wisps,

    no chimeras, no precognitive dreams

of being trampled to death by a cloud parade.

No abatement of traffic din--it may be woven

into the already too dense orchestration

    of the cloud war.

  • It's high time a pipe dream

    became a drum reality, Cymbaline,

a low-time job grooming vortical swaybacks

with silicon whiptails. It's superversive in that

it overmines gonzo ethical reasoning by

    adopting a bilateral approach.

  • It's by

turns staid and scintillant as a Catherine wheel

sowing sparks and reaping parks of flame-

colored foliage never catalogued by botanists.

Like you'll say later, the tsunami-lashed valley

    appears more verdurous than heretofore.

The cymballing of Persian palm elephant ears

    punctuates the orchestral vortex.

  • beautiful.

  • This is so beautiful, the most beautiful poem i have ever read <3 I could listen to this poem forever <3 ...

  • this is so adorable <3

  • Superb poem:-)

  • love is in the details.....

  • I'm so happy this is here.

  • finger snap, finger snap

  • 6 people drink pepsi

  • Love the line~ "I look

at you and I would rather look at you than all the portraits in the world" , tnx to the movie Beastly I was introduced.

  • they use it in 'beastly' next you're going to tell me elliott smith made the soundtrack and michel gondry directed it!

  • lol they read this in that film beastly? what a disservice! either i underestimate what looks to be the trashiest film of 2011 or a scriptwriter has just spat at what is brilliant literature

  • thumbs up if you heard this from 'beastly'

  • Why did it take him like 2 minutes to read this when it took those two kids in "Beastly" close to 3 months to read it?

  • @ivanooze22 Hahhahahahaahhahhahahahahahahhahahahahahaahhhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahaaahahahahahha!

  • This is so amazing.

  • so beautiful...

  • love this: )

  • god's existance is as questionable as Vin Laden's ...Ignorant!

  • @pastuliomanuel

Hmm Interesting logic you have there. Why do you believe he doesn't exist?

I believe that Bin Laden is merely a character being played by an actor.

    I hope you understand.

  • Like this if you were brought here by the movie "Beastly"

  • poems don't have to rhyme

  • this poem doesn't rhyme

  • If I could have lunch with anyone, dead or alive, he'd be at the top of my list.

  • I'm a poet myself, yet I can't even begin to express how Frank O'Hara's poetry has resonated with me. Watching and listening to him read is so perfect it nearly drives me to tears, as I see in his eyes, and in his words, such an innocence and passion for life. There's such a sincerity in his poems, a certain sincerity which I'm hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Do people like Frank O'Hara exist anymore?

  • "...and I do go mad while John O'Hara dies on Fire Island."

  • Four people prefer Pepsi.

  • and what good does all the research of the Impressionists do them

when they never got the right person to stand near the tree when the sun sank

    Man, what greatness.

  • one minute forty five of pure brilliance

  • Jesus, those eight last words....

  • This poem is so sweet..

  • The four people who "disliked" this video need to be found and dealt with.

  • etwrtewrtgdhdhjfgjfxjxfj

  • Actually Bin Laden's poetry isn't all that bad.

  • this poem is so charming.

  • He sounds so much like Sean Penn.

  • holy shit he does!!!

  • The more I listen to it the more I love it!

  • This poem is so beautiful.

  • I think he has this causal easy tone which matches the theme of the poem perfectly.

this is so beautiful a poem

    Im so touched

  • couldd someone explain the poem im srry im SO stupidd

  • Alright, I hate explaining poems because I think great poems resist an easy summary. But if it helps you appreciate the poem, I'll try. O'Hara is comparing everyday life (in the form of his friend, maybe boyfriend; he was gay) to great art and concludes that even great art is really nothing compared to life. This is significant since O'Hara's life was devoted to art. In addition to being a poet he was also a curator and art critic.

  • thank you =P

  • i could listen to him read poems like i listen to music

  • that's such a good way to explain it..

  • Nice to see a film of him exists. He doesn't read too well, but it's good to hear the voice of one of the most interesting poets of the 20th-Century.

  • elo

  • one of my very favourite poets, i adore him. and this poem is just lovely, you can feel frank's affection for vincent.

the line about him moving beautifully must be my favourite one

  • "it seems they were all cheated of some marvelous experience"...would anyone care to explain that part to me?

  • The experience of his loved one.

  • Hi All. Does anyone know what collection this is from.

  • love the threat at the end

    go francis russell

  • Threat?

  • he's snarling

it becomes quite an aggressive poem

as if to say 'pay attention!'

  • This poem is about Vincent Warren, a dancer with the New York City Ballet that Frank O'Hara was in love with. It makrs the moment when O'Hara realized he was in love with him. John Ashbury had invited O'Hara along with him on a european arts jaunt (which is where the itinerary lsited in the poem comes from) and O'Hara accepted. At that very moment hye realized he was in love with Vincent Warren -- and sat down and wrote this poem.

  • This is a great poet by a great, great writer. I love hearing him read this :)

  • ...and I only have eyes for you... stunningly beautiful. This the first time I've come across this poet. What a joy!

  • Thanks for posting. I'd heard O'Hara's voice before, but had never seen actual video of him with sound.

  • "sunny days."

    Obviously.

  • "Some suny days it's great to try,

and see the world through Frank O'Hara's eyes,

    20/20 all the way."

  • what's that from, may i ask?

  • what a sweetheart.

  • thank you so much for posting this.

  • Wouldn't it be funny if The Finger had designed us

to shit just once a week?

    Thanks for posting this.

  • So brilliant, thank you for posting.

  • oh wow. love those lasts lines.

  • accidental death on a beach?

    son of a bitch.

bin laden lives happily with his 20 wives, while poor ol' Frank dies freakishly.

if there is a god, he's an asshole.

  • Dear Ketchuplover,

well, these freaky things happen. Poets have had more ridiculous deaths that that. We urge you not to blame anyone. We are sure Mr. O´Hara was humongously drunk on that evening.

But it was definitely a big loss.

  • There are even reports (from de Kooning's wife IIRC) that O'Hara stepped in front of that dune buggy. He was significantly less prolific in his latter months which many critics (Perloff, Gooch) attribute to deepening depression.

  • which wife/ gf? I've seen her work and that of Ruth. Nutcases.

  • @revistamododeusar

and fortunately, osama bin laden is now DEAD. whereas, Frank will always be revered for this poem and all his other poems. RIP Frank.

  • @revistamododeusar He was run over by a dune buggy on the beach. Even if he was drunk, how does that make him responsible for being hit?

  • He was killed by some crazed hick racing his truck along the BridgeHampton , LI beach , he ran over Frankie while he slept on the beach. That is what I heard from an old fag who knew him. It's still a problem out there, well anywhere where you have late night romantics clashing with local talent and their toys.

  • According to J.J. Mitchell and others, what actually happened was that the group's beach taxi broke down; O'Hara was struck by the buggy as he stood a slight distance from the others as they waited for the next taxi. There is nothing to indicate that the driver was a "crazed hick," either. Oh, and it happened on Fire Island.

  • From what i heard, Frank and everyone on their bus was a little drunk, the bus had a flat tire so they got out so it could be fixed, this guy came by in a dune buggy with his girlfriend- he didn't slow down, because he assumed they would all get out of the way, and they all did, except Frank- it was the other guy's fault, but most likely they were all a bit drunk and so wouldn't have had the best reaction times.

  • @ketchuplover57 not God but Satan you naive dumb fuck!

  • @ketchuplover57 WE GOT HIM!...

  • @ClichexCasualty yawn

  • @fnchrstphr ew

  • He died like a whale, hot, fat, and bloated on the beach

  • @ketchuplover57 my friend, god has redeemed his name. :)

  • there is a god and he will take your stinky soul stubid mother fucker

  • @mania466 relax buddy...God wouldn't want you to be such an ass!

  • am crying :,D

  • Absolutely wonderful! Thank you ever so much for posting this.

  • I'm so grateful that you have posted this. I can't tell you how many times I've viewed it and I'm pretty sure that I never would have seen it otherwise. thanks!

  • The entire episode of "Poetry USA" that this was taken from is amazing. There's lots of candid footage of O'Hara typing, talking on the phone, waking around midtown with Larry Rivers - I saw the entire thing years ago at the MoMa. They really should release all the episodes (don't know how many there were) on DVD.

  • neato!

  • Fantastic :)

  • Yes - where did you find this?

Thanks a lot for posting it.
