  • Every arguement for school uniforms is a correlation fallacy. The reason schools with uniforms do better is because communties that are even willing to entertain themselves with the idea of school uniforms are more open-minded and more reasonable on average then other communties who would just get emotional and morally outrage at any kind of debate on the issue.

A community that is more reasonable is also less like to be truant or tardy because reason negates such risky behaviors.

  • the school needs A LOT of money before they can get uniforms.

  • Hm. An all powerful body degrading those who's parents work hard to buy them nice clothes to the level of those who's meth addict parents can't affor rags, to make things more equal. SOUNDS LIKE COMMUNISM

  • I'm doing a school project on school uniforms vs dress codes and this video is a great help. It is very informative and looks at all the aspects, you have really done your research!

  • If you can't find a way to express yourself except for through clothes, you aren't trying very hard. A person who truly wants to express themselves and stand out of the crowd could find a way to do it even wearing a uniform. If anything, uniforms would force you to find more creative ways to express yourself.

I don't think you did a very good job of showing both sides. I know there are students who are for school uniforms. you should have tried to find a couple to show what they think.

  • I disagree with school uniforms. I think they take away you're chance to express yourself through a "style". Plus we aren't all the same so why would they make us seem like it?

  • I went to school, we wore them. Landmark students wore uniforms, which I loved because it took away the rights of students to wear “individual” clothes (unlike the government schools) and it took away the rights from young girls from dressing like prostitutes.

  • We watched this in our college tonight. For some reason, we were learning about school uniforms in GSCE English class O.o

Anyway, rock on, it was a good film.

  • Well no one has a complaint about the sports teams "uniforms" and no one says that, that is an oppression of their individuality. When I went to school the focus wasn't on individuality, but on education, we didn't have uniforms, but our dress code was so strict we would have rather had uniforms. No un-natural hair colors (pink, blue, purple, etc.) no make-up or facial hair for any students except for seniors, no earrings except for females and only 1 pr. And home you went, if you violated it.

  • hello i have a school uniform and when we took a test they said we should wear causal clothes to do better on test only reason that problems in schools went down is because if your a bad kid who barly goes to school do you think that they are going to come when there is a uninform of course not

  • that alien has a lot of wrinkles on his forehead

  • bahh. school uniforms are getting completely over the top, we cant look individual at all, so we are forced into looking bad and feeling upset because of this. it DOESN'T take long to pick an outfit, it DOESNT create a sense of a pride, its just embarrassing. it doesnt even help us work better, it does NOTHING. gangs don't occur anywhere except in cheesy high school movies. :|

  • Omg. That looks nothing like you. I had to rewatch it to see that it was...0.o

  • goddamn we are under enough control at school now they want 2 tell us how 2 dress

  • A senior attacks a 7th grader.

When the police asks the victim what the attacker looks like, the student said "I didn't see what he looks like but he wore a white polo, black pants and brown shoes" get it? If you don't then one thing is due to school uniforms every student might be an attacker of the victim so there might be hundreds of accused students.

  • are they a blood are a crip lol

  • people who say there should be uniforms have never been on a school withthem ive used them all my life and they dont do shit i hate them

  • This is academia -- our goal is not to socialize so much as to teach and have students gain success and tools for achievement in years after school. A uniform is something to be proud of -- ask the armed forces. Ask firemen. Ask state troopers. These are not costumes. These are a source of pride. What children wear to school each day as they explore who they think they are at that moment is more of a costume. Goth? Cowboy? Athlete? Cheer captain? All costumes of the moment.

  • Uniforms

Pros: easy to identify outsiders, kids get used to wearing formal clothing, and slight reduction on cost of clothing (students still want fashionable clothes anyway).

cons: not going to stop bullying, crimes, substance abuse, and its not going to increase academic performance

    misconceptions:

uniforms dont deprive creativity and individuality ( look at japan)

    My personal opinion:

We've got nothing to lose but the benefits are of a practical form, we don't get anything on a moral basis

  • Uniforms give a sense of purpose. This is why employers use them. Schools should use them because it prepares students for the many jobs that require uniforms and very strict dress codes. Edward Bernays (nephew of Freud) told Americans clothing is a means of expression so he could sell clothing and other goods. Children should be taught to express themselves through their craftmanship, hard work, and success.

  • It all depends on how boring the uniforms are. Plaid skirts and pants with sweater vests, they just make you look lerds and have always been out of fashion.

  • I was unfortunate enough to go to a middle school that had a uniform policy. It didn't change people's outlook on school. People still got into fights, people still got bad grades. More referrals went out. I'm in the 10th grade at a school that doesn't have to wear uniforms, we don't have near as many fights OR referrals.

  • What's wrong with schools' uniforms. I like it :P

  • School uniforms should be mandatory in every school in my opinion. Everyone says it wont allow you to express yourself, which is complete rubbish if you ask me. You can express yourself through art, music, personality, and it's not like you can't change your cloths after school. I think kids only have problems with it because they're usually ugly polo shirts and khaki shorts. Anyway, School is for learning, not fashion. I like how everyone looks equal. That's how it should be.

  • I'm cool with dress codes, cuz 5th grade girls have no business wearing skimpy clothes, but uniforms are bullshit. They don't unify shit. I've been in both public and private schools, and I see more unity in uniformless schools. I mean for students (especially high school) you either gotta treat em like they are high schoolers or not. You can't baby them in one place and expect them to act independently on another

  • godd we get itt shut upppp!!!!

  • Lawl. "Kids can either wear clown suits or vampire costumes..or harry potter or the x-files alien."

  • In a free society, the right to freedom of dress is an ethical principle that is more important that all the other petty concerns that are raised.

In school almost all of your freedoms and choices are stripped from you. The one last freedom you have (that of dress)... they even want to take away. Say "HELL, NO", and refuse. No one can dispute mass defiance. That is democracy in action.

  • yes sweetsweaty I 100% agree with you but school is only only one place (but not all schools) that your clothing freedome is taken away from you yes but in schools sweet the political system is a dictatorship no so much as a democracy in society in canada the us and many other countries and also what choices are striped from you u have every right to not go to school but most of us do go but really dose dress matter? in all uniforms cause equality but sweet don't get me worng I 100% agree with u

  • 13:03

  • lmao 13:50

  • good thoughts, uniforms are ace.

  • i hate school uniforms because kids r still acting bad and still goes 2 detention everyday. You can't express yourself when u wear them. Also u can't make it manitory in public schools only in private. At d school the principal says everybody should be in uniform but people still wear their regular clothes. People r not picking on other kids of their wearing & if kids R wearing bad clothes Y aren't they goinig 2 detention.

  • and no saysay girl you are wrong in some places right but your wrong in expression please your kidding me right? can you not pick up a pencil and draw or play a instument in band sine in jazz adn dance these are all ways you can express yourself clothes are only one minimal way making that argument not relevent and you make no sense in your last sentence. adn kids do get picked on for what they wear and sometimes even killed a newspaper reports that a teen got shot for his 80$ shoes.

  • well, UNIFORMS won't solve an issue and clothes do not make you. I have a cousin that lives in New Jesery, and she is still getting pick on at school. Not because of her clothes because they have 2 wear uniforms, it's because the kids are so cruel and the way she looks and her weight problem. Their are some kids that being picked on and they still have 2 wear uniforms. It's not the clothing its the kids

  • Well in Australia every Primary School and High School wears uniforms. It makes you feel like you belong to the school and it is very easy knowing what to wear everyday. Also it makes you look neat and repectable, and if you dont wear the correct uniform you get punished.

And personally Americans can't debate this, as they have never experienced what wearing a uniform for 12 years of school is like.

WEARING A SCHOOL UNIFORM IS GOOD

  • I am an American and I know what it is like to wear uniforms to school. I am still against wearing school uniforms.

  • The one thing that uniforms are for,is the equality between what people wear.Because right now, people in school and in society are judged by wearing adidas nike and reebok or fake uggs and wallmart. That's what school uniforms are for, equality.Gang issues? Wearing school uniforms won't clear that! People will still hate each other, even if they're wearing the same clothes! Education at home is what makes students not entering gangs and uniforms is a little step so that equality can be reached.

  • exactly teja uniforms creat uniformity and equality. which I have to agree with you on that yes it dose not stop gangs but it isn't meant to uniforms aren't ment to stop violence outside school grounds so your a bit off there but inevidably I agree

  • All American kids should wear uniforms

  • i dont see how uniforms would stop gang related incidents, but I do like unifroms. I wish my school had them.

I am also totally for freedom of expression, but uniforms force one to express themselves through personality alone which i think it much better

  • If america had school uniforms like the ones in japan i would have no problem with it

  • im tired of people saying it makes u look smart it dosent it makes u look gay!

  • you keep thinking its freedom of expression. let me tell you something, too much freedom leads to chaos, and the lack of school uniforms adds to the lack of dicipline in american schools. school is whaere you go do your work, not a fashion show. i've been wearing school uniform for 11 years of my school career, till i came to america. do you know how disorganised and untidy it looks? how can you say it looks "gay" when you've never tried it out? i've experienced it both ways so i can complain.

  • What do you think its looks gay. Uniforms is a sign of discipline.

  • I disagree, I went to a school with uniforms and they had no effect on discipline. The teachers caused discipline.

  • Comment removed

  • However, the research performed by Long Beach's school district is commonly cited, however it is anecdotal. The empirical studies like the one by David Brunsma show that to be untrue. Furthermore, Brunsma's research shows that uniforms have a negative effect on academic achievement. So I still stand by my opinion on the matter. I'm glad that I inspired you to research it.

  • Uniforms or not does not change how students will do academically. That is the effect of the student/parent/teacher but I'll look on that. Maybe it wont change the behavior of the students but creates an equality. I also know that it reduces detentions from a school project that proved 10% of the students were there because of dress code violations. Kids social standing are also more likely be based on individual character and not economic status. I also still stand by my opinion.

  • No it dosnt actually they look cool...here in Puerto Rico all schools have a uniform policy of shirt and jeans for boys and a shirt, skirt for girls and you can wear any type of shoes you want and all that shit!!

  • it is a pitty america is only realising this now? i will be difficult to enforce school uniforms because people have too much freedom, and too mcuh freedom creates chaos. and you cannot argue against that fact. that is why the schools in other countries' schools are more disciplined and organised.

  • leveling the playing field eh? well unfortunately reality seems to just slap you across the face sometimes. If you're equal to someone else, how the hell are you able to express who you are? its like someone jumping off a building, would you do it too just "they want to level the playing field?" c'mon!! guns and knives are the only mortal weapons we have!

  • what u wear isnt the only way to express yourself.. if you are what you wear and only that then your just as shallow as a dumb blond (no offence though).

  • ok...im a nerd...

I WANT uniforms...but thats only becuase i have this HUGE obsession with Japan... :O

    ya...sad i know Y.Y

  • school sucks BALLS!

  • ppl uniforms are meant for one reason only which is equality. For instance, a girl (wtv) is from a poor family and cannot afford nice and fancy clothing. She comes to school wearing her usual sweat shirt. Then she looks at other girls and realizes they have better, more fashionable and expensive clothes. Then she would feel inferior or sad (wtv). So with uniforms the students would all be equal. Plus, the clicks problem would be fixed. No geeks, no jocks, no prom queens bla bla bla.

  • Although you have a strong point about those less fortunate to afford the nicer high-end clothes. Most cities don't have a "help you buy" policy. My school is a public who uses uniforms and there are more expensive brands worn by those who can afford them. On top of that the clique problem is not solved just because of appearance they are all ready in a clique and they stay that way. We still have cliques, and they don't help prevent intruders; all an intruder has to do is buy similar clothes.

  • you've got a point on the clique matter.. but still uniforms help reduce the problem if not solve it. Doesn't what you wear play a major part in making you part of a clique?

  • No, that doesn't work. Its still like that in Australia. I think its main benefit is that it "looks smart" it represents the school well and it reminds students that no-matter who they think they are, they are still the ones who are doing the learning.

Its also easier to prevent the severity of marginalisation we see in non-uniofrm schools. Australia is just used to uniforms. Even if its just a polo shirt and navy skirt/pants.

  • dats till considered lucky..my country's school uniform is determined by d ministry of education....so every student looks d same unless ur fom a private school or an elite school. den d uniforms will b different..im in high school....since im a prefect i hav to wear a blue collar shirt wit dark blue work pants wit black shoes...normal students will wear white collar shirts wit olive green pants wit white shoes.anytin dat has to accesories dat hav to do wit fashion will b confiscated.

  • a school uniform is juz somtin a person puts over demselves....where im from all schools has school unifrms, most of d students r assholes...pretty much, its not wat u wear dat changes tins, its the mentality of d students

  • expressing yourself isnt what you wear.

individuality isnt what you look like.

expressing yourself and being your own individual have to do with your actions and thoughts. if you think otherwise, you're too stupid to function.

clothes dont matter. uniforms make life easier. quit your whining you panseys.

  • sokong! (agree) :p

  • wow sweet, awesome job dude, im doing a debate on this tomoro, the guy at 13:02 gave me tons of ideas

  • we dont even have choices! and we cant wear necklaces!

  • who cares?

wear that stuff outside of school.

  • so what

  • im not wearing a gay uniform

  • With teachers like that last guy, Holmes High must push out a ton of brainiacs.

  • Anyways far as I can recall they did away with the uniform being that it did more bad then good anyways I believe like 2 years or so ago, but don't quote me on that. lol

  • Make uniforms bullet proof then maybe that might make a difference! lol

Serious though, um uniforms don't keep people from fighting other people, or keep them safe by the off chance someone brings a gun to school, lucky for my last year at holmes was in 2002.

Btw when I was going to holmes they didn't always have people watching those camera's all the time.

  • this "debate" was very one sided. all of the student's arguments against uniforms were very unintelligent and didnt really have any evidence supported their argument.

  • Wow, interesting to see Holmes back in 2001. That's about 2 or 3 years before I transfered there. By the time I transfered to Holmes, they had adopted the dress code policy which said that you could wear white, black or red collared shirts and black or khaki pants. By my senior year, they had done away with the dress code and we were able to wear hooded sweatshirts.

The strict dress code did nothing but give students something to complain about and rebel against. Good riddance to it, I say.

  • The costume guy is a genious........

  • "we have to many seperate communities, cliques..."

Words from a communist. A collectionivist.

  • in england and wales uniforms have been part of school life for years now, and i think it matters what type of uniform you where, at my school in the 1980s i had to wear white shirt, black trousers and a blue jumper for the winter, my nephew who goes to the same school now wears green polo shirt and black trousers he has a black sweatshirt to wear when its cold, footwear is black shoes trainers(sneakers) only for sport,

  • Painting ghettoes pink based on colour psychology reduces gang violence. Clothing, I have no idea.

  • they are good y wear them they equalize people and cheap it helps the poor. yes sometime the drees codes that como with them are opressive please respond

  • Although many cite "helping the poor" as a reason, school uniforms have been proven to be even more of a burden on low income families than not having school uniforms. As a result, inner-city schools to switch to uniforms find themselves buying the clothes for these students.

  • men i live in venezuela with rich goverments and poor people. since the 70s w have shool uniforms and poverty is the major reason. its a no brainer what more cheap buying clothes around the year tp look "cool" or a uniform thats will be your only concern around the year

  • i undrestand you are a student and you dont want to be taken away that liberty. but in a way they are very useful not oonly to the school and to you "uniforms in venezuela are desing t be cheap" we are very poor :)

  • But does your school or government have to help you buy these special clothes when you already had perfectly fine clothes in your closet? Ours did.

  • no not even to the most poor they are affordable.

and not every one has perfectly fine clothes in their closet. let me tell you these unifroms are never goof

i will prefer not to use uniforms but they have atributes that helps the comunity that are: accesability for poor an richs, equalizing, and as a result less violence sorry for the bad english

  • Your English is fine. There is just a major community difference when it comes to uniforms in America: uniforms are no more accessible to the poor, the rich still buy a "better brand" of uniform, and violence was not reduced in the case study examined in this video. The school actually had to switch back to a non-uniform system because there was no point in continuing the uniforms since they accomplished nothing at all.

  • @SeanFromIT I have not watched the video yet but regarding uniforms, my personal opinion is that they are great as they are: accessible to both rich and the poor - the rich have the choice in buying better quality uniforms but both the aesthetic and functional difference between the better quality uniforms and the average uniform will not show much difference;

  • @isubscribeyo23 uniforms create a better learning environment-even in offices people wear the conventional dress code like collared shirts and ties or an appropriate length of skirt for the women, so that they can concentrate better than when they are wearing, say, a deep scoop neck or a tight dress; the idea of a dress code provides too many loop holes for not only those particularly rebellious students (who i can guarantee you will change even uniforms)but also those who want to follow fashion

  • @isubscribeyo23 thats a lie i was at a uniform school and the clothes made me unhappy so i had no want to get good grades now im at a regular school and get as and bs

  • during school years, people grow, in both personal style and body size, far too fast to say that a closet full of "perfectly good clothes" is going to be good at all in six months time. with school uniforms, three-four outfits will last you at least three years.

  • thats not the schools fault. thats the fault of the comapnies attemtping to take advantage of a school uniform. moot point.

  • I live in england with uniforms, and it does bugger all, it makes it worse, and students resent uniforms and disreptect the uniform and where it comes from

  • uniforms are an invasion of freedom, limmiting individuality and liberty.

But most importantly it's not dealing with the problem it's trying to cover it up, not only that it makes it worse, it educates and conditions students to predudice and disrespect other based on their clothing, it inself encourages gang culture, judging the next group because of what they.

  • actually, i support the idea of school uniforms. I've been to schools with and without uniforms and I've found that schools with uniforms are much more under control than those that don't have uniforms.

  • So how about you go to one of the schools that wears them and stop trying to force uniforms on other people bitch!!

  • what are school uniforms good for?

  • Only American uniforms are not worth wearing. The Japanese style are mildly asthetically pleasing.
