I think the reason why this stunned audiences back in the day is because it was nothing like they expected, like what the trailer portrays here. It leaves you intrigued and yearning to know what it is about. Honestly, go see the movie. This movie basically had to go above and beyond and had to endure decades of controversy. It paved way for other "Exorcist, demon" type movies. Without this film, truly there would not be any kind of great supernatural film you see today.

I just scoff at everyone who thinks "The Ring" is scarier than "The Exorcist" or anyone thinks it's completely badass to hate on this movie. "The Exorcist" is probably one of the most important films I've seen. This was the movie that got me fascinated with horror films when I was at a young age, this was the film that got me intrigued in the paranormal, and it still questions my beliefs and society today. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

I'm 20 and this movie still scares me! Very disturbing and ahead of its time when it came out. Still remains a classic in the horror genre. I watched it back in October and it still creeps me out (along with the beginning -- eerie).

I think the people who aren't scared or at least a little frightened are probably the ones who views the film as if watching a movie in film class; or the smug-like movie critics. Heck, even some atheist wouldn't find this movie terrifying (just the annoying ones).

First of all who ever is a pure movie fan ( horror or not ) and hates this movie is STUPID. this is the greatest movie of all time -- Its filled with Drama, Horror and IntensIty that made you think about how evil ( no matter in what form ) and how it exists in all of us. For all those claiming this movie is shit: The Exorcist is not supposed to be the scariest movie of all time or all out horror; it's an influential drama-horror, that was only labeled like that in it's time because everything was so new and real that people couldn't avoid but thinking it was way too disturbing. But there's much more to it: it's an important and innovating piece of cinema, wich had an impact on culture and without, those horror flicks about demons we all like would never exist.
