Fantastic. I am too young to remember Vijay, it's cool to see him in action -- wow, what a beautiful game! He probably should have been a GS champion with that talent, but I guess he didn't possess the mental toughness.
@smashingthyme Actually he was pretty tough mentally, which is rare for Indian sportsmen of that Era. Where he was lacking was physical conditioning. He used to run out of steam by the 5th set. He lacked stamina. Remember those were the days when players were not as professional as the ones today. Why, Becker as late was 1997, used to chug on coke in between games. Can you imagine Rafa, Fed or Djoker doing something like that today?
@JDANNYJ. There a lot of Tamils who are great athletes but to play these sports, professionally with instruction, players tend to be Christian inclined or influenced when it comes to tennis. I'm not sure in other sports like cricket or field hockey. I'd say the best Tamils are the ones who play with no instruction.
@nit78Yes, I can but they are not from India but from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Canada, or other ex-patriot style. Mahadevan Sathasivam, a cricket player from Sri Lanka. Duncan White, track athlete of Anglo-Indian ancestry and Susanthika Jayasinghe, a track athlete. Before independence, you had a lot of Anglo-Indian athletes in which many were raised Catholic. They are not included as Tamils because they spoke English and their British ancestry.
@Ariamaluum That's true. The Anglo missionaries passed on their love for sports along with Christianity to their Indian converts. But things are changing with the Hindu community these days as also the Muslims, what with Sania and Bhupathi.
This is really cool. I never even knew this match took place. Great upload!

Borg is crushing the ball. That is a 125 mph serve with 90 square inch Snauwert wooden racquet, unbelievable. This was when tennis was a real game.

Thank you for this tennis gem of yore!
First time to see vijay in his prime and what a streaky talent and beautifully fluid serve and volley game he possessed.
