i won't look back too far on this comment thread, but as far as the race thing, I think it goes to point up some terribly ignorant people who, just in their innocent bliss will tell things about people, even family for instance, that that person would rather not be told. To me it's about the shame, that some people must still live their lives blurring that line in their loyalties and upbringing. It's a very smart and multi-faceted skit, even in some sly way to see if people will laugh.....
....and what that says about THEM (and all of America, perhaps.) I realize this was at a time of "All In The Family," etc., and Richard Pryor doing "Blazing Saddles," and that we get away with quite alot these days. On the simpler side, this could just be about a still-too-ignorant-for-her-own-good grown woman trying, of course not very well, to leach off her more successful childhood 'colored' friend. Maybe more simply, it was done to really make people think. Reading some here, it succeeded.
@screaminone Here, what is said in private between racist whites, is said directly to the African American's face, hence the "slyness" and the message. It is the Archie Bunker approach...
The whole point is that he is above it. He is above all the pettiness of this small town. He has gone on to a successful carreer in eterntainment and she has stayed with her small town mentality. He will not stoop to her level. If that this racist then I miss understand the word.
I knew Carol Burnett as child and she most certainly was not a racist, the woman who took care of me was her yoga teacher and she is a wonderful person and very open to everyone
@sonya3020 her and sammy davis jr. were really close friends. and one of her favorite episodes she did was with the jackson 5. they do shit like this all the time on madtv. are they racist? no. so it's racist to make fun of black people, but when white people make fun of other white people it's ok? or when black people make fun of white people it's ok? it's just fun. doing something like this don't make you racist.
hey u jerk off, do you know how long I made that comment, now you want to be a ass and speak up. Kick rocks!!! I never said she was a racist, bitch, I said it's a racist setting. Kiss my ass. Shut the fuck up!!!
This skit was great. It shows how things were 30 and 40 years ago. What I love most about it is that it shows me how much I and my generation took for granted. It is so good to see all the old stereo type films to remind me that we were all blind and stupid. It is nice to have grown up after all these years.
I remember as a kid seeing this and being confused--shows like Sesame Street and Electric Company were "color blind" so I couldn't figure out what was "wrong" with Carol's character. This skit taught me how stupid racists are. Genius.
carol burnett was wonderful. this was a deep skit for the 70's. sammy's response was wonderful. i rmember carol burnett show was one of the few shows my parents would let us stay up to watch as a kid. it cam on on friday night. that was the big tv night in the 70's for all you young'uns.
woah, that was really risky! it's a good thing that there are some people out there (carol for instance) that are able to portrey such serious matters through comedy.
Very Funny......It's strange but it's how alot of religious right types treat Gay and Jewish people today....NOT ALL mind you.....But alot JUST like this skit. Oh well, God Bless them too!
I love the Carol sketches that make you think.

That ending made the whole thing worthwhile. :) Even though I was cringing through about 98% of it.

Then again, from some experience, some people are just dingy like Carole's character, and will always be like that thru their whole lives. DOOONE. :)

They should have added more words for Sammy Davis's part. Put a real black person in there to added some pike to it, if it's all fun and games.
