@SkinkyBlutongue That is probably becaues there where plenty of floating in the air and ocean scenes where they would lose the bags in the making, and they didn't want the bags to end up in the ocean for billions of years.
A little harsh don't you think? If you're a Christian this would be the worst thing you could ever say to someone, and if you're not it doesn't mean anything at all! :-D
My class watched this knowing we would have to write a short essay on it so right off the bat everyone started laughing and making fun of it and so did I for the first couple of minutes up till Id say the dog shit part. By the end everyone was listening intently and seeming kinda emotional....
@Zenity i understand ... by political i meant 'ideological'... i wish the film was a film for the sake of being a film, instead of being a film for the sake of a certain message, is what i meant
@cha1tman Most films have an underlying message or moral to the story. Whether or not it pushed the message on us at the end (which I believe is something we should always think about anyway..) it is still a film for film's sake, over 18 minutes' worth. It having a ideological point does not devalue it's storytelling or cinematics.
@Zenity personally, when i reached the end of the film i was disappointed, because i thought 'oh, this film was just made to promote environmentalism'. that reaction, for me personally, to some extent ruined the story/cinematics for me. this is just my personal reaction to the film. overall i still enjoyed it and am not trying to say it is bad or that others should agree with my reaction to the end :)
@cha1tman Alright, Well I suppose I only commented to give you some perspective. Thanks for being understanding and I'm sorry that the promotion of environmentalism ruined the magic of the film for you!
@cha1tman if you couldn't tell the film was about waste and the environment without being told so at the end of the film, you're more than a little myopic... and i think we can deduce that that feeling you thought was "disappointment" at the end was probably more than a bit of guilt for your own unfortunate opinions (or lack thereof) about environmentalism
@MilwaukeeMax perhaps i was a little (or very) myopic to not predict the ending, but i am an environmentalist & am not guilty about my attitude/actions towards the environment. i am vegan, i don't drive a car, i don't drink bottled water, i try to avoid plastic bags. i think environmentalism and ethics are very important. the difference in our opinion is in regard to art. personally i like art that does not have an explicit message, that 'just is'. no disrespect is meant to you
I wonder if this film were directed by a first time, unknown director and narrated by a regular guy with good voice (not the famous Werner Herzog) would it still be shown at Venice Film Festival?
lol i think this movie got such a positive response because of a placebo effect, i just think its funny with the german accent and the dog shit being picked up..i dont know
Hi guys, I'm working for an environmental project at school. Our topic is about garbage. We want to show the consequences of garbage causing pollution and climate change by clips. Like this video, we can see that once plastic bags go to the sea, they will cause water pollution. Is there anybody can help me with other clips with land or air pollution? Thank you in advance :)
Thank you to Werner Herzog for your brilliant narration. And thank you the film makers for the insight and kite flying that it took to make this masterpiece.
Everyone on the planet should see this beautifully shot poignant film.

This post-apocalyptic movie needs zombies for the bag to fight. And then after he's destroyed all the zombies he'll be like "I bet THEY wish you had created me so I could die!" MUHAHAHHAAHAHAHA!
Yikes! Note to self: "Put cloth sacks in vehicle and back pack" - what to do with the plastic sacks full of plastic sacks? Make a rain coat or light weight poncho.
simple, but amazing! what some people can do with cameras and a computer is a wqork of art! thanks for sharing. i will never look at a plastic bag the same way again, haha
Wow... wonderfully done and brilliant. It reminds me of the film we used to watch in elementary school every year call "The Red Balloon" (Or, "Le Ballon Rouge" ... it was all in French).
Saw this today in my college. I was really amazed by the fact that if we were to see this without audio, it'd feel like random shots of flying bags. However his speech alone makes him so alive, just like a human being.
I carry one with me in my briefcase (Chicobag) and have several in the car. If I forget to bring it in, I carry the things out by hand. It amazes me how many people take a bag for one item that fits in the palm of their hand and carry it out next to a briefcase, backpack, or purse with plenty of room to hold it.
@JixXxJiTyc The narration is written from the perspective of the plastic bag. In the end of the video the bag, which does not die because it does not biodegrade, says: "I wish you had created me so I could die." The words are powerful because they hint at the pain of immortality as well as making a profound point about how shortsighted it is for us (humans) to create an object that will exist long after we are gone. All things, living or not, should (in the end) return to the earth.
I think this is such a wonderful short film. The filmmakers create a piece where I feel so much for a plastic bag. Brilliant! Also, I saw this at the film festival, Mountainfilm in Telluride. Independent film festivals create homes for short films like this one!
burn it all, capture the exhausted gasses and bottle them, then blast them into fucking space? Quicker we do this the better... Let's see one of you try tell me that blasting gas into infinite is unethical.
