Your late Peter Jennings spat out such a horribly inaccurate report of the Japanese at that time even my mother was aghast! Her exact comment on it was, "That is exactly the kind of wretched reporting that should be expected from a Canadian High School drop-out!" which Peter Jennings was. He's not even american, how the hell would he know. What we knew at the time was that Japan was not willing to surrender and we wanted to stop American Casualties. There was another plan but the deaths were in the millions. This could be considered by many people as to save lives on both sides. Only around 200,000 killed from atom bomb in Hiroshima.

This is what I would say to Pauwels..Blockading Japan would have dragged the war out in 1946, and would have caused the deaths by starvation of more civillians, plus our POW's. Japan, who was taught that surrender is the highest dishonor, beg to capitulate?
