@artbking1 It can be difficult to express their sound differences. Alpine generally can play really loud and clean when given their close to their top RMS power. Kenwood is usually more of best sound when powered by a receiver or lower power amp type of speaker.
The "question of the year" is, what are the acoustical/musical differences between the Alpine S and the Polk DB series coaxial speakers? I'm aware that the Polk have higher RMS ratings, but my specific interest (and that of probably thousands of enthusiasts) is how they compare in sound. What are the differences in low end, mid range, mid-highs and highs, sound stage, efficiency (real world), etc. Everyone has their favorites, but I'd like to get some objective "controlled environment" info.
@sideskraft Both Polk and Alpine are premium quality car audio manufacturers and you really cannot go wrong with either. Which one is superior is really a matter of opinion. I will say that the Polk DB series will generally have a higher recommended minimum wattage and will sound their best with external amplification. The Alpines are not quite as efficient but have a lower minimum power requirement. Feel free to call for additional assistance: 800.315.0030--Crutchfield
Hey, just wondering what power an amp will need to send each channel to these speakers to get them sounding near-best. i've looked at 4 channel amps with 60w to each channel at 4ohm. do i need 80w to each channel because of the 80 watt RMS rating on the speaker? Cheers
@glenskates1 Please accept my apologies for the delayed response. While it’s safe to assume you are asking about the Type-S speakers, we’ll need to know the specific size and model. Each size has a different power rating so depending on your specific models, a different amplifier and power might be recommended. Feel free to call for a personalized recommendation: 800.315.0030--Crutchfield
@glenskates1 RMS is the only number that matters. To realize the full potential of all four speakers, I recommend selecting a 4 channel amplifier that can provide up to 80 watts RMS on each of the 4 channels at the 4 Ohm impedance. I have a question, i'm about to upgrade my stereo system in my car... I was originally planning to put a pair of Alpine SPR-68 speakers in the front & Alpine SPS-517 speakers in the back powered by the MRP-F300 amplifier. Is this going to work or would I be better off putting the SPS-517s in the front and back with that amp?
I've been told i shouldn't mix type R and type S speakers in the same car... but i've also been told by others it would be okay. What are your opinions?
@idontgetit777 Please accept my apologies for the delayed response. Both the Type S and the Type R models will handle the full power output of the amplifier you’ve referenced so it’s really up to you. In most cases, it’s best to have the same speaker (or series speaker) in both locations to have the same tonal quality throughout the vehicle. Because both versions use similar materials, this is less of an issue. Feel free to call for additional assistance: 800.315.0030--Crutchfield

thank you for the help. I have or last question...I just got the alpine 6x9 type r's and the alpine 6.5 type s's in the front. Will a 800 watt amp that runs 100x4 rms at 4ohms power both sets of speakers?
@bsiffy well many after market decks have RCA slots for front and back speakers and subs if you are running from an amplifier. depending on how old your vehicle they may not have places for you to tie in subs or your speakers if you are putting more in.
Installing an aftermarket radio or not does not change the difficulty level of the speaker installation. It just affects how good they sound when you are finished. More power will make them sound better.
i have 2 alpine sps-600 and 2 alpine sps-600c, both which are estimated around 80 watts rms. which amplifier would you recommend from the alpine market?
We've got just the amp for you. The Alpine MRP-F300 would be just about perfect. Check it out at Crutchfield's website, and of course you can call us for more info.
I have one pair of Alpine SPS-500 (55watts rms and 4ohms) and 1 pair of ALPINE SPS-609 (85watts rms and 3.6ohms) and I will hook them up in a alpine mrp-f300( 4x75watts rms at 2ohms and 4x50watts rms at 4ohms) So I will use alpine sps-500 with the channel 1 and 2 and was thinking about sps-609 with the channel 3. what do you think is the best way to do that? tks
With those speakers connected to that amp, the SPS-500s will get 50 watts per speaker (1 4-ohm speaker per channel). You pretty much have to run the SPS-609s the same way as the front speakers. And since they are rated at a slightly lower impedance, they will get slightly more power.
But you can't run them at 2-ohms the way you might want to. You have 4 speakers, and a 4 channel amp. 50 (or so) watts will be plenty to make those speakers sound fantastic.
dude, can I use these speakers with an alpine mrp-f300 at 2 ohms? its weird because they are 3.6ohms and not 4.. So If i wire them in pararel it would be 1.8 ohms and I am not sure if the amp will handle this.
So, you have a 4 channel amp and you are going to use Type-S speakers, and you are going to use them in 2-ohm? How many pairs of speakers will you be running in parallel?
The best thing you can do is call us, that way we can discuss it real time and help you get the best configuration possible.
I install these speakers alot at bestbuy..they sound good even if you just power off of a radio(they sound good with not alot of power)...but you put a 4channel on them they get real loud and clean!!
Hi, i had a question i keep getting different answers.. My question is
i have a Honda civic 2008 and i want to get these Speakers but dont want to get an amplifier... but will the sound quality STILL sound great even though i dont have a AMP or a aftermarkt Deck? I just have a factory deck so will the sound still be amazing?
I hope to hear from you soon. this has been bothering me for a while.. please get back to me about this thanks!!
When you replace your factory speakers with aftermarkets, results will vary greatly. If you plan to power them with the factory radio, you might possibly get less sound than you had before.
If, however, your factory speakers were blown these would sound amazing in comparison.
Long story short, more power is better. Look for the most efficient speakers you can find to work with your factory radio.
hey how you guys doing, I have question, I have a 2000 Honda Civic and wanted to know what would be a nice alpine combination I could go with. Im more of a hip hop fan so I like bass and clarity. Should I go with a Type R speakers and alpine amp or should I add a sub in there too?
Great question, and we make recommendations for systems like yours every day. You can either call us, or chat with us, or email us to get a personal recommendation.
We'll need more info than you provided here. We'll ask you questions and discuss what products make the most sense for your car and listening preferences.
Here's how we get our measurements for car speakers and radios.
We have a research team that physically measures each new vehicle that comes out. We take note of what stuff fits easily, with slight modification, and with major modification.
Since most people don't want to cut up their cars, we err on the side of caution. For those that are willing to modify, we can explain what has to be done. Just call us.
Kicker KS600, says it doesn't fit my car, not in the front, not in the back, yet I was able to put them in the back no problem, and the front with slight modification. And then, there are more then just 1 speaker they have said didn't fit my car, that actually does, in the stock location, with stock mounting brackets.
Crutchfield is overpriced, and they have no clue what they are talking about when it comes to speakers. If you buy from them, you will regret it.
The differences between S and R are the power handling, tweeter size, materials, and efficiency.
It boils down to sound quality and how much power you'll be using. If you use an amp, you'd definitely want Type R. If not, you could go with either pair.
The Type R have a bigger tweeter and a stronger woofer cone, they sound much better.
Limited on power and on a tight budget? Go with Type S and you won't be disappointed.
I have 4 type s 6 1/2's replacing my stock door speakers. This is running off a alpine cda-9886 deck. I'm not amplifing it i'm considering the ktp-445. My main question is I'm running the mrp-1000 to two type r's and it can draw so much power it dim's my headlights. Will not powering my speakers with the extra drain from my subwoofers damage them?
Your alternator is not provifing enough power for the sub amp to handle the peak power needs of your subs, and it's affecting the rest of your electrical system.
You can fix this a couple of ways.
1 Get a bigger alternator and battery
2 Get two batteries installed
3 A capacitor might fix the problem. Check out the Tsunami LITEWAVE Series PP1002TM at Crutchfield. It's the easiest way to fix your problem then you can add the Alpine power pack.
Yes, generally speaking a speaker that can only handle up to 30 watts RMS is actually designed to sound good with today's in-dash stereos. They typically have about 18-22 watts of RMS power.
I just swaped all my Type S Speakers for all Type X Components, you can see my video of them from the box but I am sure your company and you guys have seen them up close and what not, but I will miss the Type S though :(
1. i got a 1993 ford ranger and it says the door and behind the seat speakers are 6x8's, but i was wondering if it would be possible to fit 4 of these alpine 6x9's in instead?
2. i want to get an amp for all 4 speakers and im wondering what amp would be best to get from info such as how much watts it puts out and the rms and all that good stuff.. im looking preferably for an alpine though.
running these in my front doors , pioneer 6x9's in the back deck , and 2 rockford fosgate p3 12's in the trunk , fosgate amp p-1000 bd mono amp running the subs , looking to get a 2 channel amp for the door and 6x9's , its crazy loud and the bass hits fu*kin hard..
Hey I'm looking at getting these. Just wondering, what is the major difference between these and the R's? I'm debating on which to get, I do plan on powering them with a clarion double din deck.
Good question. The differences between S and R are the power handling, tweeter size, materials, and efficiency.
It boils down to sound quality and how much power you'll be using. If you use an amp, you'd definitely want Type R. If not, you could go with either pair.

Alright thanks for the help. The Deck I'm getting runs off 22 watts RMS CEA-2006/50 peak x 4 channel power. I'm just wondering if that would be enough to purchase the R's cause if it would power those nicely (I plan on getting two pairs of Type S or R components 6.5s) I will probably get the R's. Thanks for reading this.
22 watts of head unit power is sufficient for the Type R's. They will sound their absolute best with amplifier power, but will sound very good running off your deck.
Alpine's Type R speakers are a step up from the Type S speakers. Of course, both are excellent, but the Type R's handle a little more power and have a stronger basket and frame.
I hope that helps you make your decision monkeyturd, thanks for watching and commenting, keep the questions coming.
Given all the same parameters, your question is what will sound better, the 10" or the 12" Type R Alpine subs. What you didn't tell us is what kind of music you'll be listening to most of the time.
i'd say for most music where the bass should sound tight and accurate, the 10"s will sound better, especially with the small truck. You don't need 12" speakers unless you are trying to vibrate the lug nuts out.
Does anyone know which would offer better Sound quality dual Type R 10'' or the same configuration with the 12'' model. The Subs will be powered by a PDX 1.1000 in manufacture recommended sized sealed box. This will be placed behind the seats of a Ford Ranger Extended cab if that makes any difference. Oh and the subs will be wired at 4ohm if possible.

I just swaped all my Type S Speakers for all Type X Components, you can see my video of them from the box but I am sure your company and you guys have seen them up close and what not, but I will miss the Type S though :(
Ask more if needed dude :P

Hey chevyguy,
First off, what are you doing with a Ford?
Second off, You might be able to get 6X9's into a 6X8 opening with a little help from a sawzall, jig saw, and/or dremel.
You should probably talk to one of our Advisors, they can help you figure out what's the best speaker to put in there.

hey i got a couple questions
1. i got a 1993 ford ranger and it says the door and behind the seat speakers are 6x8's, but i was wondering if it would be possible to fit 4 of these alpine 6x9's in instead?
2. i want to get an amp for all 4 speakers and im wondering what amp would be best to get from info such as how much watts it puts out and the rms and all that good stuff.. im looking preferably for an alpine though.
let me know soon thanks alot!

Hey I'm looking at getting these. Just wondering, what is the major difference between these and the R's? I'm debating on which to get, I do plan on powering them with a clarion double din deck.

Haydog,
Good question. The differences between S and R are the power handling, tweeter size, materials, and efficiency.
It boils down to sound quality and how much power you'll be using. If you use an amp, you'd definitely want Type R. If not, you could go with either pair.
The Type R have a bigger tweeter and a stronger woofer cone, they sound much better.
Limited on power and on a tight budget? Go with Type S and you won't be disappointed.

Haydog,
22 watts of head unit power is sufficient for the Type R's. They will sound their absolute best with amplifier power, but will sound very good running off your deck.
Sorry it took so long for me to respond.

Hi 213kilacali,
I wish it were that simple, but then there would be no need for Crutchfield and out huge database of what speakers and stereos fit what vehicles.
No, in fact the same speaker could go in the front of some cars, and the back of other cars. It's always vehicle specific.
If you need help picking out the right speakers, we've got it. Seriously, give us a ring and we'll get your car sounding great!

Hello monkeyturd15,
Alpine's Type R speakers are a step up from the Type S speakers. Of course, both are excellent, but the Type R's handle a little more power and have a stronger basket and frame.
I hope that helps you make your decision monkeyturd, thanks for watching and commenting, keep the questions coming.

Hi Jason,
Given all the same parameters, your question is what will sound better, the 10" or the 12" Type R Alpine subs.
